Phylogenetic analysis of novel dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) papillomavirus sequences, TtPV1, -2, and -3, indicates that the early and late protein coding regions of their genomes differ in evolutionary history. Sliding window bootscan analysis showed a significant a change in phylogenetic clustering, in which the grouped sequences of TtPV1 and -3 move from a cluster with the Phocoena spinipinnis PsPV1 in the early region to a cluster with TtPV2 in the late region. This provides indications for a possible recombination event near the end of E2/beginning of L2. A second possible recombination si

The high prevalence of chronic inflammatory oropharyngeal pathologies and a large variety of specific pathogenetic features of the persistent viral infections caused by the species of the families Herpesviridae and Papillomaviridae as etiological agents of the disease suggest the necessity of investigations with a view to evaluating the clinical significance of persistent viral infections with Herpesviridae and Papillomaviridae species in the patients presenting with chronic inflammatory oropharyngreal pathology. The objective of the present study was to elucidate the prevalence and clinical s

BACKGROUND: A link between idiopathic male infertility and viral infections exhibiting seminal carriage has emerged recently. In this respect, human papillomavirus (HPV) appears to be the most prevalent sexually transmitted agent worldwide. The viruses present in the genital environment comprise the genital virome. HPV infection reportedly disrupts homeostasis of the virome in women but this topic has not previously been studied in men.
METHODS: This was a retrospective study of males attending the fertility clinic at Amiens University Medical Center (Amiens, France). Men with a multiple-type

Occupational exposure to pathogens can pose health risks. This study investigates the viral exposure of workers in a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) and a swine farm by analyzing aerosol and surfaces samples. Viral contamination was evaluated using quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) assays, and target enrichment sequencing (TES) was performed to identify the vertebrate viruses to which workers might be exposed. Additionally, Quantitative Microbial Risk Assessment (QMRA) was conducted to estimate the occupational risk associated with viral exposure for WWTP workers, choosing Human

INTRODUCTION: Nucleic acid from viruses is common in peripheral blood, even in asymptomatic individuals. How physiologic changes of pregnancy impact host-virus dynamics for acute, chronic, and latent viral infections is not well described. Previously we found higher viral diversity in the vagina during pregnancy associated with preterm birth (PTB) and Black race. We hypothesized that higher diversity and viral copy numbers in the plasma would show similar trends.
METHODS: To test this hypothesis, we evaluated longitudinally collected plasma samples from 23 pregnant patients (11 term and 12 pr

The progress of sequencing technologies has facilitated metagenomics projects on environmental samples like sewage water. The present study concerned the analysis of sewage samples collected from 3 locations in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in China. The analysis focused on RNA viruses known to infect humans and identified viruses from 10 families. The proportion of human virus species in the sewage samples was relatively stable with an average of 17%. Thirty virus species known to infect humans were identified and they belonged to 6 families: Picornaviridae (12), Astroviridae (11), Reoviri

Papillomaviridae is a diverse family of circular, double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) viruses that infect a broad range of mammalian, avian and fish hosts. While papillomaviruses have been characterized most extensively in humans, the study of non-human papillomaviruses has contributed greatly to our understanding of their pathogenicity and evolution. Using high-throughput sequencing approaches, we identified 7 novel papillomaviruses from vaginal swabs collected from 81 adult female Weddell seals (Leptonychotes weddellii) in the Ross Sea of Antarctica between 2014-2017. These seven papillomavirus geno

Infection by human papillomaviruses (HPV) can cause warts and tumors. So far, no small molecule antiviral has been approved for the treatment of infections with this DNA virus, although preclinical studies show activity for nucleosidic compounds, such as 9-(2-phosphonylmethoxy)ethylguanine (PMEG) or cidofovir. This prompted us to test new prodrug versions of the nucleoside analog 3'-azido-2',3'-dideoxythymidine (AZT), known to be active against reverse transcriptases and approved for the treatment of HIV. Here we report the synthesis of an ethylbutyl alaninyl ester phosphosphoramidate prodrug

OBJECTIVE: The infection of human papillomaviruses (HPVs) plays a role in the development of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). A poor oral hygiene and dental calculus may cause the infection to persist. Therefore, this study aimed to assess whether this dental calculus could serve as a potential biosource in early detection of HPVs in patients with OSCC.
METHODS: DNA was isolated from the dental calculus of people diagnosed with OSCC, and MY09/11 primer set was used to detect the presence of HPV. The positive samples were further sequenced and aligned using megablast NCBI BLAST tool to ide

Genus Gammapapillomavirus (Gamma-PV) is the most diverse and largest clade within the Papillomaviridae family. A novel set of degenerate primers targeting the E1 gene was designed and further used in combination with the well-known CUT PCR assay to assess HPV prevalence and genus distribution in a variety of cutaneous samples from 448 immunocompetent individuals. General HPV, Gamma-PV and mixed infections prevalence were significantly higher in actinic keratosis with respect to benign and malignant neoplasms, respectively (p = 0.0047, p = 0.0172, p = 0.00001). Gamma-PVs were significantly more

Human papilloma viruses (HPV) are a small group of non‑enveloped viruses belonging to the Papillomaviridae family with strong similarities to polyoma viruses. The viral particles consist of a genome in the form of a circular double‑stranded DNA, encompassing eight open reading frames, as well as a non‑enveloped icosahedral capsid. HPV infection is considered the most common sexually transmitted disease in both sexes and is strongly implicated in the pathogenesis of different types of cancer. 'High‑risk' mucosal HPV types, predominantly types 16, 18, 31, 33 and 35, are associated with most cerv

BACKGROUND: The virus family Papillomaviridae has been documented in a wide range of animal species and can cause benign and malignant proliferative lesions. The presence of concurrent lingual papillomas and squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) in cetaceans has also been documented in both wild and captive populations, suggesting malignant transformation of benign papilloma to SCC may occur in this species.
CASE REPORT: In 2008, a 38-year-old captive male inshore bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops aduncus) was diagnosed with papillomatous lesions on the intermandibular frenulum rostral to the tongue and

Viromics studies are allowing us to understand not only the enormous diversity of the virosphere, but also the potential threat posed by the emerging viruses. Regarding the latter, the main concern lies in monitoring the presence of RNA viruses, but the zoonotic potential of some DNA viruses, on which we have focused in the present study, should also be highlighted. For this purpose, we analyzed 160 fecal samples from 14 species of small terrestrial mammals, 9 of them belonging to the order Rodentia. This allowed us to identify a total of 25 complete or near-complete genomes belonging to the f

Papillomaviruses (PVs) are circular double-stranded DNA virus belonging to Papillomaviridae family. During the infection cycle, PVs translate proteins that can influence cell growth and differentiation, leading to epidermal hyperplasia and papillomas (warts) or malignant neoplasms. Canis familiaris papillomaviruses (CPVs) have been associated with different lesions, such as oral and cutaneous papillomatosis, pigmented plaques, and squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs). Here, we report a clinical case of a mixed bred female dog with pigmented plaques induced by CPV16 (Chipapillomavirus 2) that progre

Periodontitis is a multifactorial inflammatory disease, traditionally attributed to a bacterial biofilm. Increasing evidence indicates that viruses, especially members of the Herpesviridae family, are frequently detected in periodontal lesions and may influence disease onset and progression. This review provides an overview of viruses present in the oral cavity, including Herpesviridae, Papillomaviridae, Retroviridae, SARS-CoV-2, and emerging viral taxa such as Redondoviridae and bacteriophages, and summarizes their reported associations with periodontitis. Proposed mechanisms of viral contrib

The virome has been increasingly investigated in numerous animal species and in different sites of the body, facilitating the identification and discovery of a variety of viruses. In spite of this, the faecal virome of healthy dogs has not been investigated. In this study we describe the faecal virome of healthy dogs and dogs with acute diarrhoea in Australia, using a shotgun metagenomic approach. Viral sequences from a range of different virus families, including both RNA and DNA families, and known pathogens implicated in enteric disease were documented. Twelve viral families were identified

Angiogenesis is essential for development, tissue repair, and vascular homeostasis, whereas dysregulated neovascularization contributes to chronic inflammation, ischemic injury, and cancer progression. Viral infections can reshape vascular programs through endothelial signaling, immune responses, metabolic stress, and noncoding RNA networks. MicroRNAs (miRNAs), including host-derived and virus-encoded species, regulate endothelial proliferation, migration, permeability, and vessel formation. This review examines how major viral families, including Herpesviridae, Hepadnaviridae, Papillomavirida

Wild rodents remain underrepresented in papillomavirus genomics, limiting current understanding of host range, tissue tropism, and evolutionary diversity. Here, we report the first papillomavirus identified in the spotted lowland paca, Cuniculus paca, from the Brazilian Amazon, provisionally designated Cuniculus paca papillomavirus 1 (CpPV1). Histopathological examination supported the diagnosis of a virally induced squamous papilloma. Broad-range L1 PCR (FAP59/64), rolling-circle amplification, and Illumina MiSeq sequencing enabled recovery of a complete circular genome of 8,803 bp containing

Bats are implicated as natural reservoirs for a wide range of zoonotic viruses including SARS and MERS coronaviruses, Ebola, Marburg, Nipah, Hendra, Rabies and other lyssaviruses. Accordingly, many One Health surveillance and viral discovery programs have focused on bats. In this report we present viral metagenomic data from bats collected in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia [KSA]. Unbiased high throughput sequencing of fecal samples from 72 bat individuals comprising four species; lesser mouse-tailed bat (Rhinopoma hardwickii), Egyptian tomb bat (Taphozous perforatus), straw-colored fruit bat (Eid
