Ocular-involving paraneoplastic syndromes present a wide variety of clinical symptoms. Understanding the background pathophysiological and immunopathological factors can help make a more refined differential diagnosis consistent with the signs and symptoms presented by patients. There are two main pathophysiology arms: (1) autoimmune pathomechanism, which is presented with cancer-associated retinopathy (CAR), melanoma-associated retinopathy (MAR), cancer-associated cone dysfunction (CACD), paraneoplastic vitelliform maculopathy (PVM), and paraneoplastic optic neuritis (PON), and (2) ectopic pe

Dermal paraneoplastic syndromes are non-malignant disorders, caused indirectly by the increase in growth factors or as immunological reactions, which lead to a variety of inflammatory, hyperkeratotic or proliferative skin reactions. They can occur as facultative or obligate paraneoplastic dermatoses, which are associated with oncological processes (solid tumours or hematologic diseases). The recognition of paraneoplastic skin disorders can accelerate proper diagnosis and determine better prognosis for the patient and is also important to clinicians because it is often the first symptom of life

Paraneoplastic syndromes are a group of nonmalignant disorders caused by immunologic or nonimmunologic reactions in response to an underlying cancer. In the orbit and ocular adnexa, paraneoplastic syndromes can affect every structure. Early recognition of paraneoplastic syndromes can expedite diagnosis and improve outcomes for patients as they are often the first sign of potentially life-threatening malignancy. The purpose of this review is to characterize the paraneoplastic syndromes as they manifest in the periorbita and orbit.

CASE REPORT: We review a patient with ocular manifestations of a paraneoplastic syndrome. It was a cancer-associated retinopathy (CAR) in a woman with visual loss, and attenuated and sheathed retinal arterioles. The electroretinography (ERG) showed severe abnormalities of the a and b-waves. The tumour process was not discovered until 6 months later, when a squamous neoplasia that invaded the uterus and vagina was observed.
DISCUSSION: Paraneoplastic syndromes are a group of manifestations produced as a remote effect of cancer cells. CAR syndrome is caused by autoimmune reactions to retinal an

Paraneoplastic syndromes affecting the visual system are a group of conditions that arise in the systemic malignancy framework. In this review, we have provided a detailed and comprehensive overview of the published literature on the various ophthalmic paraneoplastic manifestations. A systematic review of many databases has been performed to identify ample literature on the paraneoplastic syndromes related to ophthalmology. We have discussed here the clinical features, pathogenesis, and treatment strategies of various ophthalmic paraneoplastic syndromes. It can be challenging to distinguish th

We describe a 68-year-old woman with metastatic small cell lung cancer, in remission, who presented with several months of moderately progressive truncal, gait ataxia, followed by development of saccadic dysmetria and ocular flutter. CSF analysis revealed lymphocytic pleocytosis, normal protein and glucose, with four oligoclonal bands. She was diagnosed with a probable paraneoplastic syndrome and successfully treated with high dose intravenous methylprednisolone and plasmapheresis, with resolution of eye movement abnormalities, and improvement of ataxia. In this case, ocular flutter might have

Bilateral diffuse uveal melanocytic proliferation is a rare paraneoplastic disorder where bilateral blindness is caused by uveal thickening, serous retinal detachment, and rapid cataract formation. Several different malignancies have been associated with bilateral diffuse uveal melanocytic proliferation, but ovarian carcinoma in women and lung and pancreatic carcinoma in men are the most common. The underlying mechanism is thought to be related to a an endogenous factor wich regulates the proliferation of uveal melanocytes. We present the case of a 75-year-old man with bilateral diffuse uveal

We report the case of a lady who presented with 3 weeks of visual floaters and optic disc swelling. Subsequent investigations revealed deep white matter changes on brain imaging, and enlarged mediastinal nodes. The presence of anti-CRMP-5 antibodies finally led to the diagnosis of a paraneoplastic syndrome, and mediastinal lymph node biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of small-cell lung cancer. The learning points from this case include that optic neuritis can be the only presenting feature of a paraneoplastic neurological syndrome, and the usefulness of anti-neuronal antibody measurement as a dia

Paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration may occur in association with Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome (LEMS), but to our knowledge, the co-occurrence of paraneoplastic opsoclonus-myoclonus syndrome and LEMS has not been previously reported. A 67-year-old woman presented with a complex partial seizure and evolving ocular flutter, opsoclonus, myoclonus and 'cerebellar' signs, all of which improved spontaneously within 6 weeks. Approximately 8 weeks after symptom onset, the patient became encephalopathic, she had a further complex partial seizure, and she became areflexic with potentiation of de

The clinical symptoms of paraneoplastic syndromes affecting the retina are varied and difficult to recognize. Ocular symptoms often appear as the first symptom, even before the diagnosis of cancer, so their recognition is of great importance. In our paper, we discuss paraneoplastic syndromes affecting the retina: cancer-associated retinopathy, melanoma-associated retinopathy, paraneoplastic vitelliform maculopathy, paraneoplastic optic neuropathy, and bilateral diffuse uveal melanocyte proliferation with case reports. Our goal is to contribute to the early diagnosis and rapid, adequate treatme

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article discusses the varied types of paraneoplastic syndromes that commonly have neuro-ophthalmologic manifestations. Diagnostic considerations and therapeutic options for individual diseases are also discussed.
RECENT FINDINGS: Paraneoplastic syndromes can affect the afferent and efferent visual systems. Paraneoplastic syndromes may result in reduced visual acuity from retinal degeneration, alterations in melanocyte proliferation and uveal thickening, or acquired nystagmus. Ocular motor abnormalities related to paraneoplastic syndromes may present with symptoms from

Paraneoplastic syndromes are indirect clinical manifestations of cancer, arising from immunological mechanisms or tumor-derived substances. The most common paraneoplastic syndromes associated with lung cancer are endocrine syndromes. We report the case of a 50- year-old woman with progressive ocular proptosis and orbital pain who was evaluated by multiple specialties with various diagnostic tests that did not explain her symptoms. She received immunosuppressive therapy without clinical improvement. A right paracardiac mass was subsequently identified on imaging, initially suspected to be a per

Paraneoplastic syndromes may be the first sign of a malignancy. They are systemic, nonmetastatic manifestations associated with a variety of malignant neoplasms and occurring in a minority of cancer patients. These associations of symptoms and signs are not directly related to the site or local manifestations of a malignant tumor or its metastases, but their recognition may facilitate the detection of malignancies or recurrences. Paraneoplastic syndromes are categorized into 6 types: dermatologic or cutaneous, endocrine, hematologic, neurologic, osteoarticular or rheumatologic, and ocular. Dif

OBJECTIVE: To review the paraneoplastic neurologic syndromes associated with otoneurophthalmologic manifestations.
DEVELOPMENT: Paraneoplastic otoneurophthalmologic syndromes usually result from encephalitis of the brainstem and/or cerebellar degeneration. They can develop in association with various immunological responses against onconeuronal proteins (e.g. anti-Hu, anti-Ri, anti-Yo, anti-Ma, anti-Ta and anti-Tr) or with immunological mechanisms against unknown antigens. The eye movement abnormalities may have a supranuclear, nuclear or internuclear origin. There is no ocular movement abnor

OBJECTIVES: Paraneoplastic syndromes occur rarely in association with laryngeal cancer. When present, the syndrome may be the first sign of the malignancy. The aim of the present study was to review and report on all published cases in the international literature.
METHODS: A search of PubMed was conducted for "paraneoplastic syndromes in laryngeal cancer" without any restrictions on language or publication year. The full texts of all relevant articles were reviewed and all cases of paraneoplastic syndromes associated with any type of laryngeal cancer were extracted and analyzed.
RESULTS: We

Paraneoplastic syndromes consist on systemic manifestations associated with certain cancers which are not a direct consequence of tumor invasion or its metastases. It is known that autoimmunity and autoantibody synthesis play an important role in its pathophysiology due to a process of molecular mimicry. Paraneoplastic syndromes in ophthalmology are rare, but it is important to recognize them clinically because in some cases symptoms preceded the diagnosis of an underlying neoplasia. Most frequently involved cancer is small cell lung carcinoma, but there is also a relationship with other tumor

Paraneoplastic vision loss, which represents a small percentage of paraneoplastic neurologic syndromes, can be a blinding disease. Presenting visual symptoms are variable, making diagnosis challenging. History of the presenting illness, ocular examination, and utilization of various modalities, such as automated perimetry, ocular coherence tomography, and electroretinogram allow for localization of vision loss to the optic nerves or retina, guiding in diagnosis and management. Paraneoplastic vision loss is often painless, bilateral, and subacute, and accompanies other neurologic symptoms but c
