Radiographic appearance of canine parvovirus enteritis.

Sixty dogs with serologically proved parvovirus infection were radiographically evaluated for signs of gastrointestinal disease. Patient grouping was based on duration of illness, which correlated generally with severity of clinical signs. Early in the disease, the radiographic appearance usually was normal. As the disease progressed, abnormal gas and fluid distention of the small bowel became evident. Contrast radiographic findings usually were normal early in the disease but became abnormal as the disease progressed. Vomiting of the contrast agent, delayed gastrointestinal transit time, floc

Retrospective evaluation of canine parvovirus monoclonal antibody supports faster clinical recovery in shelter dogs with naturally occurring canine parvovirus.

OBJECTIVE: To retrospectively evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of the canine parvovirus monoclonal antibody (CPMA) administered with standardized supportive care for naturally occurring canine parvovirus (CPV) in a shelter setting. METHODS: Electronic medical records from CPV-positive dogs treated at Gigi's Parvovirus Treatment Center between June 2020 and May 2024 were reviewed. All dogs received a standardized standard-of-care (SOC) algorithm. Dogs treated prior to August 2023 received SOC alone (n = 49), while those admitted thereafter received CPMA (0.2 mL/kg, IV) plus SOC (63).

Two potential recombinant rabies vaccines expressing canine parvovirus virion protein 2 induce immunogenicity to canine parvovirus and rabies virus.

Both rabies virus (RABV) and canine parvovirus (CPV) cause lethal diseases in dogs. In this study, both high egg passage Flury (HEP-Flury) strains of RABV and recombinant RABV carrying double RABV glycoprotein (G) gene were used to express the CPV virion protein 2 (VP2) gene, and were designated rHEP-VP2 and, rHEP-dG-VP2 respectively. The two recombinant RABVs maintained optimal virus titration according to their viral growth kinetics assay compared with the parental strain HEP-Flury. Western blotting indicated that G protein and VP2 were expressed in vitro. The expression of VP2 in Crandell f

Canine coronavirus-associated puppy mortality without evidence of concurrent canine parvovirus infection.

This report presents 2 cases in which puppy fatalities were associated with canine coronavirus (CCV), but no evidence of concurrent canine parvovirus (CPV-2) disease was observed. Case 1 involved a 7-week-old, male short-haired Chihuahua, which had become lethargic 24 hours after purchase from a pet store. Within 72 hours, the puppy began to vomit, had diarrhea, and was admitted to the veterinary clinic, where it was placed on IV fluids. The parvovirus Cite test was negative. The puppy died within 12 hours of admission and was submitted for diagnostic workup. Gross pathology revealed an enteri

Persistence of DNA from canine parvovirus modified-live virus in canine tissues.

Canine parvovirus (CPV-2) modified-live virus vaccine strain can replicate in lymphoid tissues and intestinal mucosa after administration, being shed through canine faeces. Detection of vaccine strains has been reported in the bloodstream and faeces, potentially interfering with molecular diagnostic tests. The persistence of these strains in canine tissues has not yet been described. With this aim, canine tissues were tested during a molecular survey to screen for the presence of canine enteric viruses. Tissue samples from 165 dead dogs were tested by a conventional PCR assay. Positive samples

Canine parvovirus in vaccinated dogs: a field study.

The authors report a field study that investigated the canine parvovirus (CPV) strains present in dogs that developed the disease after being vaccinated. Faecal samples of 78 dogs that have been vaccinated against CPV and later presented with clinical signs suspected of parvovirus infection were used. Fifty (64.1 per cent) samples tested positive by PCR for CPV. No CPV vaccine type was detected. The disease by CPV-2b occurred in older and female dogs when compared with that by CPV-2c. The clinical signs presented by infected dogs were similar when any of both variants were involved. In most ca

Parvovirus-induced regression of canine transmissible venereal sarcoma.

In 1981, during the worldwide canine parvovirus (PV) epizootic, canine transmissible venereal sarcomas growing in Beagles in a colony regressed earlier than expected after the dogs became infected with PV. Subsequent studies revealed that modified-live PV vaccine (feline panleukopenia virus) was capable of preventing tumor transplantation when the vaccine was inoculated simultaneously with the tumor in a site distant from the implantation site. However, the PV vaccine had no effect if it was inoculated 3 or 18 days after the tumor was transplanted.

Duodenal perforation in a puppy with canine parvovirus infection.

A 2-month-old puppy was brought to a veterinary hospital with diarrhea, vomiting, and anorexia. The test for canine parvovirus was positive, and she was hospitalized for supportive care. Her gastrointestinal symptoms initially improved; however, vomiting and lethargy developed again in the second week of hospitalization. Abdominal ultrasonography results were suspicious of a duodenal perforation. Cytology of the abdominal effusion confirmed septic peritonitis; therefore, emergency exploratory laparotomy was performed. The surgery was successful, and the puppy recovered fully. When symptoms rec

Canine Parvovirus Infections in Taiwanese Pangolins (Manis pentadactyla pentadactyla).

Canine parvovirus type 2 (CPV-2) is among the most important and highly contagious pathogens that cause enteric or systemic infections in domestic and nondomestic carnivores. However, the spillover of CPV-2 to noncarnivores is rarely mentioned. Taiwanese pangolins (Manis pentadactyla pentadactyla) are threatened due to habitat fragmentation and prevalent animal trafficking. Interactions between Taiwanese pangolins, humans, and domestic animals have become more frequent in recent years. However, information about the susceptibility of pangolins to common infectious agents of domestic animals ha

Canine parvovirus in Africa: Explaining persistent disease despite vaccination.

Canine parvovirus (CPV) remains one of the most important causes of infectious gastroenteritis and mortality in puppies worldwide despite the widespread availability of effective vaccines. Although vaccination has substantially reduced disease incidence since the introduction of modified-live vaccines, CPV continues to circulate globally, and cases of parvoviral enteritis are still reported in both vaccinated and unvaccinated dogs. These observations have generated ongoing debate regarding the relative contribution of viral, host, and management factors to vaccination failure. This narrative r

Generation of canine neutralizing antibodies against canine parvovirus by single B cell antibody technology.

Canine parvovirus (CPV) is a significant threat to canines and is widely distributed worldwide. While vaccination is currently the most effective preventive measure, existing vaccines are not able to offer comprehensive and dependable protection against CPV infection. Hence, there is a need to explore alternative or complementary strategies to tackle this problem. In this study, we present an approach for the efficient screening of canine antibodies targeting CPV using a single B cell antibody technique. We sorted single IgM- IgG+ CPV+ B cells from canine peripheral blood mononuclear cells usi

Occurrence of canine parvovirus type 2c in the United States.

Canine parvovirus (CPV) type 2 (CPV-2) emerged around 1978 as a major pathogen of dogs worldwide. In the mid-1980s, the original CPV-2 had evolved and was completely replaced by 2 variants, CPV-2a and CPV-2b. In 2000, a new variant of CPV (named CPV-2c) was detected in Italy and now cocirculates with types 2a and 2b in that country. The CPV-2c has also been reported from single outbreaks in Vietnam and Spain. This study was conducted to determine if CPV-2c occurs in the United States. Thirty-three fecal samples were collected from dogs in 16 states between April 2006 and April 2007 and were te

Serological detection of infection with canine distemper virus, canine parvovirus and canine adenovirus in communal dogs from Zimbabwe.

Domestic dogs are common amongst communities in sub-Saharan Africa and may serve as important reservoirs for infectious agents that may cause diseases in wildlife. Two agents of concern are canine parvovirus (CPV) and canine distemper virus (CDV), which may infect and cause disease in large carnivore species such as African wild dogs and African lions, respectively. The impact of domestic dogs and their diseases on wildlife conservation is increasing in Zimbabwe, necessitating thorough assessment and implementation of control measures. In this study, domestic dogs in north-western Zimbabwe wer

Antiviral activity of canine interferon lambda 3 expressed using a recombinant adenovirus against canine coronavirus, canine parvovirus, and canine distemper virus.

Canine coronavirus (CCoV), canine parvovirus (CPV), and canine distemper virus (CDV) are highly contagious canine pathogens; dogs with these diseases are difficult to treat. In a previous study, we developed a recombinant adenovirus expressing canine interferon lambda 3 (Ad-caIFNλ3) in canine epithelial cells. In this study, we aimed to investigate the antiviral activity of Ad-caIFNλ3 against CCoV, CPV, and CDV in two canine cell lines, A72 and MDCK. Ad-caIFNλ3 transduction suppressed replication of these viruses without cytotoxicity. Our results suggest that Ad-caIFNλ3 may be a therapeutic ca

Impact of VP2 mutations on viral fitness in canine parvovirus.

Canine parvovirus type 2 (CPV-2) is a highly contagious pathogen responsible for severe gastroenteritis in carnivores, particularly in dogs. Continuous antigenic evolution has resulted in the emergence of CPV-2a, CPV-2b, and CPV-2c variants, defined by amino acid substitutions in the VP2 capsid protein. In this study, genetically altered CPV-2 viruses carrying common VP2 mutations (S297A, V300G, D305Y, Y324I, N426D, N426E, and T440A) were generated to evaluate their effects on viral behavior in vitro. Mutations were individually introduced into an infectious backbone (strain 447), classified a

Evidence for evolution of canine parvovirus type 2 in Italy.

Two isolates of canine parvovirus (CPV) were obtained from dogs affected with severe haemorrhagic diarrhoea. Type 2b antigenic specificity was predicted by both antigenic analysis with monoclonal antibodies and PCR characterization with type-specific primers. Nevertheless, sequence analysis of the capsid protein-encoding gene revealed two amino acid changes. One of the changes affected position 426 (Asp to Glu), in a major antigenic site of the viral capsid, determining the replacement of a residue unique to CPV type 2b. The failure of established typing methods to distinguish this antigenic v

Parvovirus infection of keratinocytes as a cause of canine erythema multiforme.

Erythema multiforme major was diagnosed in a dog with necrotizing parvoviral enteritis. Skin lesions consisted of ulceration of the footpads, pressure points, mouth, and vaginal mucosa; vesicles in the oral cavity; and erythematous patches on the abdomen and perivulvar skin. Microscopic examination of mucosal and haired skin specimens revealed lymphocyte-associated keratinocyte apoptosis at various levels of the epidermis. Basophilic cytoplasmic inclusions were seen in basal and suprabasal keratinocytes. Immunohistochemical staining, performed with canine parvovirus-2-specific monoclonal antib

Canine morbillivirus (canine distemper virus) with concomitant canine adenovirus, canine parvovirus-2, and Neospora caninum in puppies: a retrospective immunohistochemical study.

A retrospective immunohistochemical study was designed to investigate the frequency of concomitant traditional infectious disease pathogens in puppies that died suddenly and review the aspects of associated pathogenesis. Fifteen puppies were evaluated; the pathology reports and histopathologic slides of these animals were reviewed to determine the pattern of histopathologic lesions. The intralesional identification of antigens of canine (distemper) morbillivirus (CDV), canine adenovirus-1 and -2 (CAdV-1 and -2), canine parvovirus-2 (CPV-2), Toxoplasma gondii, and Neospora caninum was evaluated
