PATTERN SEPARABILITY VISUAL FEEDBACK TO IMPROVE PATTERN RECOGNITION DECODING PERFORMANCE.

Head and neck malignancies significantly contribute to the cancer burden among women in South India mainly due to the tobacco chewing pattern prevalent in them. The use of pectoralis major myocutaneous flap for post surgical defect reconstruction is more challenging in them owing to their donor area anatomy. We aimed to analyse and compare the clinical profile and post operative outcome of male and female patients undergoing pectoralis major myocutaneous flap reconstruction for oncological head and neck resections. We retrospectively analysed the records of male and female patients who underwen

Neural substrates for visual pattern recognition learning in Igo.

Different contexts require different visual pattern recognitions even for identical retinal inputs, and acquiring expertise in various visual-cognitive skills requires long-term training to become capable of recognizing relevant visual patterns in otherwise ambiguous stimuli. This 3-Tesla fMRI experiment exploited shikatsu-mondai (life-or-death problems) in the Oriental board game of Igo (Go) to identify the neural substrates supporting this gradual and adaptive learning. In shikatsu-mondai, the player adds stones to the board with the objective of making, or preventing the opponent from makin

A Visual Behavioral Training Study of Categorical Face Pattern Recognition in Mice.

Can rodents form a categorical face concept or is their ability to discriminate faces from objects driven solely by visual features? To answer this question, we trained C57BL/6J mice on a touchscreen face-object discrimination task and examined their behavior in two experiments. We show that: (i) after training, mice generalized face-object classification to novel exemplars but lost the ability to discriminate when stimuli were inverted or contrast‑negated, consistent with the classic effects of these manipulations on humans performing categorically face-specific tasks; (ii) along a continuum

Pattern Recognition and Visual Detection of Aldehydes Using a Single ESIPT Dye.

The accurate discrimination and quantification of aldehydes is a worthy objective made challenging by their similar chemical reactivities. Considering the nucleophilic reaction mechanism between an aldehyde and a primary amine, it is reasonable to vary the reaction pH to manipulate the reactivity of aldehydes and the stability of the resulting Schiff base for analytical purposes. We have designed and synthesized three benzothiazole-based fluorescent molecules (BS1-BS3) containing an amino group substituted at the ortho-, meta-, and para-positions for aldehyde sensing. It was determined that on

Training visual pattern recognition in ophthalmology using a perceptual and adaptive learning module.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of a perceptual and adaptive learning module (PALM) for teaching the identification of 5 optic nerve findings. METHODS: Second- through fourth-year medical students were randomized to the PALM or a video didactic lecture. The PALM presented the learner with short classification tasks consisting of optic nerve images. Learner accuracy and response time guided the sequencing of successive tasks until mastery was achieved. The lecture was a narrated video designed to simulate a portion of a traditional medical school lecture. Accuracy and fluency on a pretest,

Modal-independent Pattern Recognition Deficit in Developmental Dyscalculia Adults: Evidence from Tactile and Visual Enumeration.

Developmental dyscalculia (DD) is characterized by lower numerical and finger-related skills. Studies of enumeration among those DD that suggested core deficiency in pattern recognition, working memory or/and attention were mostly carried out in the visual modality. In our study, we examined visual (dots) enumeration of 1-10 stimuli and tactile (vibration) enumeration of 1-10 fingers among DD and matched-control adults. We used 800-ms stimuli exposure time of either random/non-neighboring or canonical/neighboring stimuli arrangements (visual/tactile). Compared to controls, those with DD respon

Electrophysiological patterns of visual word recognition in deaf and hearing readers: An ERP mega-study.

Deaf and hearing readers have different access to spoken phonology which may affect the representation and recognition of written words. We used ERPs to investigate how a matched sample of deaf and hearing adults (total n = 90) responded to lexical characteristics of 480 English words in a go/no-go lexical decision task. Results from mixed effect regression models showed a) visual complexity produced small effects in opposing directions for deaf and hearing readers, b) similar frequency effects, but shifted earlier for deaf readers, c) more pronounced effects of orthographic neighborhood densi

Do focal neocortical lesions hamper short-term recognition of visual spatial patterns?

A hundred and forty-three patients with focal - mainly neocortical - hemiphere-damage (subdivided in 4 groups according to the side of the damaged hemisphere and the presence/absence of visual field defect) and 70 controls, were given a 20-sec delay recognition test of complex spatial visual patterns. There was one free delay condition and two conditions with interference from visual material of either similar or quite dissimilar patterns to that of memoranda. The results provided by two co-variance analyses are: (i) the comparison of the hemisphere-damaged groups with controls show a signific

New insights into facial emotion recognition in Parkinson's disease with and without mild cognitive impairment from visual scanning patterns.

BACKGROUND: Recognizing emotional facial expressions is crucial for social interactions. Cognitive impairment and oculomotor abnormalities are common features of Parkinson's disease (PD) which may contribute to the performance in facial emotion recognition (FER) in PD. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to analyze eye movement behavior during a facial emotion recognition (FER) task with respect to cognitive state in PD patients and healthy controls. METHODS: Eye movements of 24 non-demented, non-depressed PD patients (12 with intact cognitive functions and 12 with Mild Cognitive Impairment

Differential Patterns of Visual Sensory Alteration Underlying Face Emotion Recognition Impairment and Motion Perception Deficits in Schizophrenia and Autism Spectrum Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Impaired face emotion recognition (FER) and abnormal motion processing are core features in schizophrenia (SZ) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) that have been linked to atypical activity within the visual cortex. Despite overlaps, only a few studies have directly explored convergent versus divergent neural mechanisms of altered visual processing in ASD and SZ. We employed a multimodal imaging approach to evaluate FER and motion perception in relation to functioning of subcortical and cortical visual regions. METHODS: Subjects were 20 high-functioning adults with ASD, 19 patients

BACKGROUND: Segmentation of medical images plays a key role in the correct identification and management of different diseases. In this study, we present a new segmentation method that meets the difficulties posed by sophisticated organ shapes in computed tomography (CT) images, particularly targeting lung, breast, and gastric cancers. METHODS: Our suggested methods, Resio-Inception U-Net and Deep Cluster Recognition (RIUDCR), use a Residual Inception Architecture, which combines the power of residual connections and inception blocks to achieve cutting-edge segmentation performance while redu

Providing multicolor plasmonic patterns with graphene quantum dots functionalized d-penicillamine for visual recognition of V(V), Cu (II), and Fe(III): Colorimetric fingerprints of GQDs-DPA for discriminating ions in human urine samples.

In this study, a novel fluorescent probe (graphene quantum dots functionalized d-penicillamine [GQDs-DPA]) was developed for the selective identification of Cu2+ , V5+ , and Fe3+ among 26 types of metal ions, which considerably quench the fluorescence intensity of GQD. So, GQDs-DPA was applied as a simple fluorescent probe for facile metal ions recognition in standard solution. The proposed DPA-GQD supported amino acids respond to Cu2+ , V5+ , and Fe3+ , with high sensitivity. The intensity of the fluorescence histogram of this probe significantly diminished in exposure to metal ions such as C

Using representational similarity analysis to reveal category and process specificity in visual object recognition.

Cross-condition comparisons on neurodevelopmental conditions are central in neurodiversity research. In the realm of visual perception, the performance of participants with different category-specific disorders such as developmental prosopagnosia (problems with faces) and dyslexia (problems with words) have contributed to understanding of perceptual processes involved in word and face recognition. Alterations in face and word recognition are present in several neurodiverse populations, and improved knowledge about their relationship may increase our understanding of this variability of impairm

Diagnostic feature training improves face matching accuracy.

Identifying unfamiliar faces is surprisingly error-prone, even for experienced professionals who perform this task regularly. Previous attempts to train this ability have been largely unsuccessful, leading many to conclude that face identity processing is hard-wired and not amenable to further perceptual learning. Here, we take a novel expert knowledge elicitation approach to training, based on the feature-based comparison strategy used by high-performing professional facial examiners. We show that instructing novices to focus on the facial features that are most diagnostic of identity for the

The influence of visual distortion on face recognition.

A person's ability to recognise familiar faces is critical to their participation in many aspects of society. Following an acquired brain injury or retinal disease, however, faces can appear distorted, a phenomenon known as prosopometamorphopsia. Although case reports have described a variety of changes in the appearance of faces during prosopometamorphopsia, the influence of the disorder on face recognition has not been rigorously investigated. In the present report, we quantify how well healthy observers can recognise familiar faces that have been distorted using a parametric model of prosop

Pattern perception at high velocities.

BACKGROUND: When objects are stationary, human pattern vision is exquisitely acute. A number of studies show, however, that Vernier acuity for lines is greatly impaired when the target velocity exceeds about 5 deg sec-1. The degradation of line Vernier acuity under image motion appears to be a consequence of a shift in the spatial scale of analysis to low spatial frequencies. If correct, this implies that Vernier acuity may not be subject to a strict velocity limit, and that with appropriate low spatial frequency stimuli, Vernier acuity might be preserved at high velocities. To test this notio

Boundary memory and image memorability are systematically related.

Boundary extension refers to the tendency to remember scenes as having wider boundaries than were physically present. A separate line of research has shown that image memorability, defined as the likelihood that an image will be remembered across observers, varies substantially across images. Previous research suggests that both boundary extension and image memorability heavily depend on image characteristics, yet the possibility that the two phenomena are related has not been directly tested. In the current study, we asked whether images that produce stronger boundary extension also tend to b

Face processing predicts reading ability: Evidence from prosopagnosia.

There is considerable interest in whether face and word processing are reliant upon shared or dissociable processes. Developmental prosopagnosia is associated with lifelong face processing deficits, with these cases providing strong support for a dissociation between face and word recognition in three recent papers (Burns et al., 2017; Rubino et al., 2016; Starrfelt et al., 2018). However, the sample sizes in each of these studies may have been too small to detect significant effects. We therefore combined their data to increase power and reassessed their results. While only a non-significant

Language-universal and script-specific factors in the recognition of letters in visual crowding: The effects of lexicality, hemifield, and transitional probabilities in a right-to-left script.

Peripheral letter recognition is fundamentally limited not by the visibility of letters but by the spacing between them, i.e., 'crowding'. Crowding imposes a significant constraint on reading, however, the interplay between crowding and reading is not fully understood. Using a letter recognition task in varying display conditions, we investigated the effects of lexicality (words versus pseudowords), visual hemifield, and transitional letter probability (bigram/trigram frequency) among skilled readers (N = 14. and N = 13) in Hebrew - a script read from right to left. We observed two language-un

Behavioral and neural markers of visual configural processing in social scene perception.

Research on face perception has revealed highly specialized visual mechanisms such as configural processing, and provided markers of interindividual differences -including disease risks and alterations- in visuo-perceptual abilities that traffic in social cognition. Is face perception unique in degree or kind of mechanisms, and in its relevance for social cognition? Combining functional MRI and behavioral methods, we address the processing of an uncharted class of socially relevant stimuli: minimal social scenes involving configurations of two bodies spatially close and face-to-face as if inte
