Antiviral Properties of Pennisetum purpureum Extract against Coronaviruses and Enteroviruses.

Many severe epidemics are caused by enteroviruses (EVs) and coronaviruses (CoVs), including feline coronavirus (FCoV) in cats, epidemic diarrhea disease virus (PEDV) in pigs, infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) in chickens, and EV71 in human. Vaccines and antiviral drugs are used to prevent and treat the infection of EVs and CoVs, but the effectiveness is affected due to rapidly changing RNA viruses. Many plant extracts have been proven to have antiviral properties despite the continuous mutations of viruses. Napier grass (Pennisetum purpureum) has high phenolic content and has been used as heal

Leaching Behaviour and Enhanced Phytoextraction of Additives for Cadmium-Contaminated Soil by Pennisetum sp.

The leaching behavior of five additives, including citric acid (CA), wood vinegar (WV), 1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid (HEDP), polyaspartic acid (PASP) and FeCl3, was investigated to evaluate the possibility of enhanced phytoextraction of Pennisetum sp. from cadmium-contaminated soil. FeCl3 and CA have the highest leaching potential due to the ability that could convert large amounts of mobile fractions of Cd. The pot experiment showed that HEDP, WV, and PASP treatments could not only significantly increase the biomass of Pennisetum sp., but also maintain high uptake capacity of Cd

Salicylic acid enhances growth and cadmium-lead phytostabilization in Napier grass (Pennisetum purpureum cv. Mahasarakham).

This study evaluated the effects of salicylic acid (SA) on the growth, heavy metal accumulation, and phytoremediation performance of Napier grass (Pennisetum purpureum cv. Mahasarakham) under cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) stress. Salicylic acid was applied using two methods: grass-cutting soaking (S) and soaking combined with watering (SW). Both SA treatments significantly (p < 0.05) improved root and shoot growth and biomass compared with the control under both Cd-Pb co-contaminated and uncontaminated conditions. SA also enhanced leaf phytochemical composition, particularly under metal stress. C

Effects of biogas slurry-borne antibiotics and polypropylene microplastics on the rhizosphere microbiome and metabolome of Hybrid Pennisetum.

Antibiotic residues in biogas slurry and microplastic contamination are increasingly occurring in agricultural soils. However, their combined effects on rhizosphere ecological processes remain poorly understood. In this study, the individual and combined effects of polypropylene microplastics (PP-MPs, 1% w/w) and biogas slurry (BS, 0.5% w/w) on the rhizosphere soil of Hybrid Pennisetum were investigated by conducting an integrated analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequencing and untargeted metabolomics. The results revealed that PP-MPs alone significantly reduced soil bacterial α-diversity and inhibit

Evaluation of the effect of processing techniques on the nutrient and antinutrient contents of pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum) seeds.

This work was undertaken to evaluate the effect of soaking, sprouting, cooking and fermentation or their combinations on the nutrient and antinutrient contents of pearl millet seeds. Standard assay procedures were adopted to determine both the nutrient and the antinutrient concentrations of the products. The synergistic effect of cooking and fermentation improved the nutrient quality. The antinutrients were reduced to safe levels to a greater extent than did any of the other processing techniques or their combinations employed.

Comparative Metabolomics to Unravel the Biochemical Mechanism Associated with Rancidity in Pearl Millet (Pennisetum glaucum L.).

Despite being a highly nutritious and resilient cereal, pearl millet is not popular among consumers and food industries due to the short shelf-life of flour attributed to rapid rancidity development. The biochemical mechanism underlying rancidity, a complex and quantitative trait, needs to be better understood. The present study aims to elucidate the differential accumulation of metabolites in pearl millet that impact the rancidity process. Metabolite profiling was conducted on ten pearl millet genotypes with varying levels of rancidity-comprising high, low, and medium rancid genotypes-utilizi
