Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Lung Perfusion.

"Lung perfusion" in the context of imaging conventionally refers to the delivery of blood to the pulmonary capillary bed through the pulmonary arteries originating from the right ventricle required for oxygenation. The most important physiological mechanism in the context of imaging is the so-called hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction (HPV, also known as "Euler-Liljestrand-Reflex"), which couples lung perfusion to lung ventilation. In obstructive airway diseases such as asthma, chronic-obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), cystic fibrosis (CF), and asthma, HPV downregulates pulmonary perfusion

Perfusion magnetic resonance imaging in psychiatry.

INTRODUCTION: Cerebral perfusion imaging using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is widely used in the research and clinical fields to assess the profound changes in blood flow related to ischemic events such as acute stroke, chronic steno-occlusive disease, vasospasm, and abnormal vessel formations from congenital conditions or tumoral neovascularity. With continuing improvements in the precision of MRI-based perfusion techniques, it is increasingly feasible to use this tool in the study of the subtle brain perfusion changes occurring in psychiatric illnesses. This article aims to review the e

Perfusion magnetic resonance imaging in Asherman syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Microvascular scarring compromises the functionality of the endometrium, and vascular flow at the junctional zone (JZ) may be the key to understanding poor reproductive outcomes in women with Asherman syndrome (AS). AIMS: To investigate whether vascular perfusion of the uterus, measured by dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) is impaired in women with intrauterine adhesions (IUA) and AS. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective observational cohort pilot study of 23 women with IUA treated with hysteroscopic synecholysis and a control group of two patients wi

Diffusion, perfusion and functional magnetic resonance imaging.

Recent developments in the use of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to measure and image molecular diffusion and blood microcirculation (perfusion) hold significant promise in the noninvasive evaluation of normal brain function and functional disorders. Molecular diffusion is the result of spontaneous random motion that involves all molecules and probes molecular motion at microscopic level. Using diffusion MRI, information on tissue geometry and compartmentation effects can be obtained. Diffusion MRI has been used to map myelin fiber orientation in brain with high accuracy. Diffusion MRI is al

Perfusion magnetic resonance imaging and magnetic resonance spectroscopy of cerebral gliomas showing imperceptible contrast enhancement on conventional magnetic resonance imaging.

The purpose of the present paper was to evaluate the utility of perfusion MRI in cerebral gliomas showing imperceptible contrast enhancement on conventional MRI, and to evaluate the relationships of perfusion MRI and magnetic resonance (MR) spectroscopic results in these tumours. Twenty-two patients with histopathologically proven cerebral gliomas and showing insignificant contrast enhancement on conventional MR were included in the present study. All patients underwent perfusion MRI and MR spectroscopy on a 1.5-T MR system. Significant differences of the relative cerebral blood volume (rCBV)

Magnetic resonance cardiac perfusion imaging-a clinical perspective.

Coronary artery disease (CAD) with its clinical appearance of stable or unstable angina and acute myocardial infarction is the leading cause of death in developed countries. In view of increasing costs and the rising number of CAD patients, there has been a major interest in reliable non-invasive imaging techniques to identify CAD in an early (i.e. asymptomatic) stage. Since myocardial perfusion deficits appear very early in the "ischemic cascade", a major breakthrough would be the non-invasive quantification of myocardial perfusion before functional impairment might be detected. Therefore, th

Etiology of perfusion-diffusion magnetic resonance imaging mismatch patterns.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Diffusion-and perfusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DWI and PWI) are useful tools for the assessment of brain ischemia. Discrepancies between the extent of DWI and PWI abnormalities are thought to depend pre dominantly on time from symptom onset to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examination. However, underlying ischemic stroke etiology can also be important. A mismatch may indicate the presence of tissue at risk for infarction, whereas the relevance of other DWI/PWI patterns is uncertain. The authors therefore investigated the etiology of brain ischemia in pa

Diffusion and perfusion magnetic resonance imaging in childhood stroke.

Two magnetic resonance imaging techniques, diffusion and perfusion imaging, are being used increasingly for evaluation of pathophysiology of stroke. This article introduces these techniques and reports some initial studies using these approaches, together with conventional T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging, for investigation of childhood stroke. It is shown that the combination of T2-weighted and diffusion images can provide information about the timing of stroke events in childhood, and perfusion imaging can detect abnormalities not visible by other magnetic resonance imaging techniques.

Quantitative Perfusion-Weighted Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Uveal Melanoma.

PURPOSE: Perfusion-weighted imaging (PWI; magnetic resonance imaging [MRI]) has been shown to provide valuable biological tumor information in uveal melanoma (UM). Clinically used semiquantitative methods do not account for tumor pigmentation and eye movement. We hypothesize that a quantitative PWI method that incorporates these, provides a more accurate description of tumor perfusion than the current clinical method. The aim of this study was to test this in patients with UM before and after radiotherapy. METHODS: Perfusion-weighted 3T MRIs were retrospectively analyzed in 47 patients with U

Magnetic resonance imaging during warm ex vivo kidney perfusion.

BACKGROUND: The shortage of donor organs for transplantation remains a worldwide problem. The utilization of suboptimal deceased donors enlarges the pool of potential organs, yet consequently, clinicians face the difficult decision of whether these sub-optimal organs are of sufficient quality for transplantation. Novel technologies could play a pivotal role in making pre-transplant organ assessment more objective and reliable. METHODS: Ex vivo normothermic machine perfusion (NMP) at temperatures around 35-37°C allows organ quality assessment in a near-physiological environment. Advanced magne

Magnetic resonance imaging of normal and abnormal brain perfusion.

The brain is highly susceptible to injury from any process that deprives its cells of oxygen, glucose, and other essential nutrients, and is therefore critically dependent on blood flow or perfusion. With hypoperfusion or ischemia, blood flow to the brain may be diminished to a level incompatible with normal function, eventually leading to acute ischemic stroke. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging is one of several imaging methods used to evaluate brain perfusion and stroke. Using a multisequence approach comprised of conventional spin echo, inversion recovery, and heme-sensitive gradient echo pul

[Perfusion magnetic resonance imaging in the treatment of Perthes disease].

In this review about perfusion magnetic resonance imaging (pMRI), we consider it to give detailed insight into the distribution of the infarction in the femoral head in the early phase of Perthes disease. The degree of head involvement is closely related to the long-term prognosis, and as early surgical treatment of children with severe head involvement may be beneficial, pMRI is suggested as an examination in older children with early stages of Perthes disease. The use of gadolinium as contrast medium in otherwise healthy children seems safe, but long-term effects are unknown.

Perfusion magnetic resonance imaging in differentiation of neurocysticercosis and tuberculoma.

PURPOSE: Tuberculoma and neurocysticercosis (NCC) are two of the most common intracranial infections in developing countries and cause of seizures or focal neurological deficit. They often present on neuroimaging as ring-enhancing lesions, and in absence of typical imaging features, can cause significant diagnostic dilemma. Differentiation is extremely important to avoid empirical exposure to anti-tubercular treatment or nonspecific treatment causing disease progression. The aim our study was to evaluate the MR perfusion characteristics of brain tuberculoma and NCC and to assess the potential

Magnetic resonance imaging-estimated placental perfusion in fetal growth assessment.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate in-vivo placental perfusion fraction, estimated by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), as a marker of placental function. METHODS: A study population of 35 pregnant women, of whom 13 had pre-eclampsia (PE), were examined at 22-40 weeks' gestation. Within a 24-h period, each woman underwent an MRI diffusion-weighted sequence (from which we calculated the placental perfusion fraction), venous blood sampling and an ultrasound examination including estimation of fetal weight, amniotic fluid index and Doppler velocity measurements. The perfusion fractions in pregnancies with a

Arterial spin labeling magnetic resonance perfusion imaging in cerebral ischemia.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Arterial spin labeling (ASL) is a noninvasive magnetic resonance perfusion imaging method for visualizing and quantifying whole-brain perfusion that does not require exogenous contrast agents. The goal of this review article is to explain the principles of ASL perfusion imaging and review the strengths and limitations of different ASL methods. RECENT FINDINGS: There are several different approaches that vary mainly on the basis of the technique that is used to label the inflowing arterial blood. These methods can be used to assess perfusion at brain tissue level or the perf

Assessment of bone perfusion with contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging.

Osteoarthritis and avascular necrosis are common clinical entities with unknown origins. Recently, vascular changes were implicated in the pathogenesis of both conditions. This article discusses the use of novel noninvasive imaging techniques as a means of assessing bone perfusion and quantifying differences seen in osteoarthritis and avascular necrosis. Review of our human data suggests that the MRI contrast dye is retained for longer periods of time, suggesting decreased perfusion out of regions of osteoarthritis and avascular necrosis. Use of such a noninvasive measure of assessing bone per
