Mechanically Anisotropic Multi-modal Phantoms for Elastography Imaging.

Mechanical anisotropy is a promising biomarker of tissue health because many tissues contain organized fibrous structures that can be disrupted by injury or disease. Elastographic imaging methods have recently emerged to noninvasively quantify anisotropic mechanical properties in soft fibrous tissues like brain white matter or muscle. Calibrated phantoms that reproduce anisotropic tissue behavior are necessary for clinical translation of these methods, but durable, validated, anisotropic, elastography phantoms are not currently available. To address this need, we fabricated mechanically anisot

Biomimetic tissue phantoms for neurosurgical near-infrared fluorescence imaging.

SIGNIFICANCE: Neurosurgical fluorescence imaging is a well-established clinical approach with a growing range of indications for use. However, this technology lacks effective phantom-based tools for development, performance testing, and clinician training. AIM: Our primary aim was to develop and evaluate 3D-printed phantoms capable of optically and morphologically simulating neurovasculature under fluorescence angiography. APPROACH: Volumetric digital maps of the circle of Willis with basilar and posterior communicator artery aneurysms, along with surrounding cerebral tissue, were generated.

Radiopharmaceutical imaging of phantoms and patients with MACACO III Compton camera.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The use of Compton cameras for imaging radioisotopes in nuclear medicine offers potential advantages over conventional gamma cameras in some aspects. In this work, we present the first results in this field with the Compton camera prototype MACACO III after a measurement campaign in La Fe Hospital (Valencia, Spain). METHODS: Images of Derenzo-like phantoms filled with 18F-FDG and 131I-NaI have been obtained with MACACO III and, in the latter case, with gamma cameras available in the hospital. Subsequently, a metastatic lesion in a patient treated with 131I-NaI after th

Adaptive Wall Shear Stress Imaging in Phantoms, Simulations and In Vivo.

WSS measurement is challenging since it requires sensitive flow measurements at a distance close to the wall. The aim of this study is to develop an ultrasound imaging technique which combines vector flow imaging with an unsupervised data clustering approach that automatically detects the region close to the wall with optimally linear flow profile, to provide direct and robust WSS estimation. The proposed technique was evaluated in phantoms, mimicking normal and atherosclerotic vessels, and spatially registered Fluid Structure Interaction (FSI) simulations. A relative error of 6.7% and 19.8% w

Wideband holographic three-dimensional ultrasonic imaging of breast and liver phantoms.

Wideband ultrasonic 3-D holography is a unique technique for volumetric imaging with extremely high lateral and depth resolution. The large frequency bandwidth, which is typically 25% to 100%, provides excellent depth resolution. The synthetic aperture provides optimum lateral resolution of one-half wavelength at the pulse center frequency. Wideband impulse holography is a multi-frequency detection and imaging technique where the reflected target's broadband time waveform signals are recorded over a defined aperture. The signals are then decomposed into their discrete frequency components as s

Anthropomorphic tissue-mimicking phantoms for oximetry validation in multispectral optical imaging.

SIGNIFICANCE: Optical imaging of blood oxygenation ( sO 2 ) can be achieved based on the differential absorption spectra of oxy- and deoxyhemoglobin. A key challenge in realizing clinical validation of the sO 2 biomarkers is the absence of reliable sO 2 reference standards, including test objects. AIM: To enable quantitative testing of multispectral imaging methods for assessment of sO 2 by introducing anthropomorphic phantoms with appropriate tissue-mimicking optical properties. APPROACH: We used the stable copolymer-in-oil base material to create physical anthropomorphic struct

Design of heart phantoms for ultrasound imaging of ventricular septal defects.

PURPOSE: Ventricular septal defects (VSDs) are common congenital heart malformations. Echocardiography used during VSD hybrid cardiac procedures requires extensive training for image acquisition and interpretation. Cardiac surgery simulators with heart phantoms have shown usefulness for such training, but they are limited in visualization and characterization of complex VSD. This study explores a new method to build patient-specific heart phantoms with VSD, with proper tissue echogenicity for ultrasound imaging. METHODS: Heart phantoms were designed from preoperative imaging of three patients

Retina Phantom Model for Hyperspectral Imaging.

Accurate retinal imaging is crucial for preclinical research and the development of diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for eye diseases. However, existing retinal imaging models often lack the precision needed to replicate the complex optical environment of the eye, limiting their effectiveness in testing and calibration. Current approaches rely heavily on live animals, which pose ethical concerns and variability in results. In this work, we designed a retinal phantom that can be used to validate spatial and spectral properties. We developed a 3D-printed mouse phantom retina to simulate the

Seeing the phantom: a functional magnetic resonance imaging study of a supernumerary phantom limb.

OBJECTIVE: Supernumerary phantom limb (SPL) is a rare neurological manifestation where patients with a severe stroke-induced sensorimotor deficit experience the illusory presence of an extra limb that duplicates a real one. The illusion is most often experienced as a somesthetic phantom, but rarer SPLs may be intentionally triggered or seen. Here, we report the case of a left visual, tactile, and intentional SPL caused by right subcortical damage in a nondeluded woman. METHODS: Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we investigated the multimodal nature of this phantom, which the patien

Volume estimation of tonsil phantoms using an oral camera with 3D imaging.

Three-dimensional (3D) visualization of oral cavity and oropharyngeal anatomy may play an important role in the evaluation for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Although computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MRI) imaging are capable of providing 3D anatomical descriptions, this type of technology is not readily available in a clinic setting. Current imaging of the oropharynx is performed using a light source and tongue depressors. For better assessment of the inferior pole of the tonsils and tongue base flexible laryngoscopes are required which only provide a two dimensional (2D) rende

Anthropomorphic phantoms for assessment of strain imaging methods involving saline-infused sonohysterography.

Two anthropomorphic uterine phantoms were developed that allow assessment and comparison of strain imaging systems adapted for use with saline-infused sonohysterography (SIS). Tissue-mimicking (TM) materials consist of dispersions of safflower oil in gelatin. TM fibroids are stiffer than the TM myometrium/cervix, and TM polyps are softer. The first uterine phantom has 3-mm-diameter TM fibroids distributed randomly in TM myometrium. The second uterine phantom has a 5-mm and 8-mm spherical TM fibroid, in addition to a 5-mm spherical and a 12.5-mm-long (medicine capsule-shaped) TM endometrial pol

Computerized evaluation of mammographic image quality using phantom images.

A simple, quick and computerized method for quantitatively evaluating the image quality of mammography phantom images has been developed. Images of the American College of Radiology (ACR) mammographic accreditation phantoms were acquired under different X-ray techniques, scored and ranked subjectively by five expert readers, and digitized for quantitative analysis. The contrast and signal-to-noise (contrast-to-noise) ratios of the main nodule and microcalcification group were obtained accurately and reproducibly using an image processing protocol. The contrast values were successful at discrim

Optical phantoms for the characterization and validation of imaging and spectroscopy: a review.

SIGNIFICANCE: Tissue-mimicking optical phantoms are an essential tool in the development, characterization, and calibration of instruments used in optical imaging, spectroscopy, diagnosis, and treatment of disease. AIM: Major developments in optical phantoms have been enabled by recent advances in material development and characterization, as well as sophisticated manufacturing techniques. In this review, we will focus primarily on the developments in the field over the past 20 years since the seminal review paper on this topic by Pogue et al. in 2006. Throughout, we have attempted to provide

Experimental Validation of Shifted Position-Diffuse Reflectance Imaging (SP-DRI) on Optical Phantoms.

Numerous diseases such as hemorrhage, sepsis or cardiogenic shock induce a heterogeneous perfusion of the capillaries. To detect such alterations in the human blood flow pattern, diagnostic devices must provide an appropriately high spatial resolution. Shifted position-diffuse reflectance imaging (SP-DRI) has the potential to do so; it is an all-optical diagnostic technique. So far, SP-DRI has mainly been developed using Monte Carlo simulations. The present study is therefore validating this algorithm experimentally on realistic optical phantoms with thread structures down to 10 μm in diameter

Sensitivity evaluation of DSA-based parametric imaging using Doppler ultrasound in neurovascular phantoms.

An evaluation of the relation between parametric imaging results obtained from Digital Subtraction Angiography (DSA) images and blood-flow velocity measured using Doppler ultrasound in patient-specific neurovascular phantoms is provided. A silicone neurovascular phantom containing internal carotid artery, middle cerebral artery and anterior communicating artery was embedded in a tissue equivalent gel. The gel prevented movement of the vessels when blood mimicking fluid was pumped through it to obtain Colour Doppler images. The phantom was connected to a peristaltic pump, simulating physiologic

Multislice tomographic imaging and analysis of human breast-equivalent phantoms and biological tissues.

A laser transillumination tomographic system, consisting of electrical, optical, mechanical, and software components, to obtain multislice images of tissue-equivalent breast phantoms and biological tissues, is developed. The tissue-equivalent phantoms are prepared from paraffin wax mixed with wax color pigments by matching their surface backscattered profiles as measured by multiprobe laser reflectometer, with that of respective tissues. The optical parameters of these phantoms are determined by matching their reflectance profiles with that as obtained by Monte Carlo simulation of optical scat

Magnetic Particle Imaging (MPI): Experimental Quantification of Vascular Stenosis Using Stationary Stenosis Phantoms.

Magnetic Particle Imaging (MPI) is able to provide high temporal and good spatial resolution, high signal-to-noise ratio and sensitivity. Furthermore, it is a truly quantitative method as its signal strength is proportional to the concentration of its tracer, superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIOs). Because of that, MPI is proposed to be a promising future method for cardiovascular imaging. Here, an interesting application may be the quantification of vascular pathologies like stenosis by utilizing the proportionality of the SPIO concentration and the MPI signal strength. In this st

The Charles Bonnet syndrome: 'phantom visual images'.

The Charles Bonnet syndrome is a condition in which individuals experience complex visual hallucinations without demonstrable psychopathology or disturbance of normal consciousness. An analysis of the sixty-four cases described in the literature reveals that the syndrome can occur at any age though it is more common in elderly people. Reduction in vision, due to peripheral eye pathology as well as pathology within the brain, is associated with the syndrome. Individual hallucinatory episodes can last from a few seconds to most of the day. Episodes can occur for periods of time ranging from days
