Auxins are involved in the regulation of fruit set and development; however, the role of IAA is unclear in pea (Pisum sativum) since the endogenous auxin 4-Cl-IAA appears to be the auxin stimulating ovary (pericarp) growth. To further understand the role of auxins during fruit development, auxin localization, quantitation, transport, and gene expression activity were assessed in this model legume species. IAA levels and auxin activity (DR5::β-Glucuronidase [GUS] staining and enzyme activity) were substantially reduced in the pericarp vascular tissues, pedicels, and peduncles of fruit upon seed

BACKGROUND: Ascochyta blight (AB) is a major disease that severely constrains crop yield and quality, capable of causing losses up to 80%. The pathogens responsible for AB are included in a species complex, with Didymella pinodella being one of the main causal agents. Current methods for detecting D. pinodella are based on morphological and molecular identification, both of them to be performed under laboratory conditions. To enable rapid on-site diagnosis, we have developed a novel method that integrates recombinase aided amplification (RAA) with a lateral flow dipstick (LFD) for the specific

The aroma of pea protein (Pisum sativum L.) was decrypted for knowledge-based flavor optimization of new food products containing pea protein. Sensomics helped to determine several volatiles via ultra-high performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry and 3-nitrophenylhydrazine derivatization. Among the investigated volatiles, representatives of aldehydes, ketones, and acids were reported in literature as especially important in pea and pea-related matrices. After validation of the method and quantitation of the corresponding analytes, sensory reconstitution as well as omission st

Pea (Pisum sativum) is one of relatively few genetically amenable plant species with compound leaves. Pea leaves have a variety of specialized organs: leaflets, tendrils, pulvini and stipules, which enable the identification of mutations that transform or affect distinct parts of the leaf. Characterization of these mutations offers insights into the development and evolution of novel leaf traits. The previously characterized morphological gene Cochleata, conferring stipule identity, was known to interact with Stipules reduced (St), which conditions stipule size in pea, but the St gene remained

Understanding the adverse impact of nanoparticles in crop plants has emerged as one of the most interesting fields of plant research. Therefore, this study has been conducted to investigate the impact of silver nanoparticles (AgNps) on Pisium sativum seedlings. Besides this, we have also tested whether nitric oxide (NO) is capable of reducing toxicity of AgNps or not. NO has been found as one of the most fascinating molecules, capable of enhancing plant tolerance to different environmental stresses. The results of the present study showed that AgNps treatments (1000 μM and 3000 μM) significant

Pea (Pisum sativum L.) is a major legume crop frequently infested by various parasites, including the pea aphid (Acyrthosiphon pisum Harris), which takes nutrients from its host and transmits phytopathogenic viruses. This aphid species comprises several biotypes, each one capable of feeding and reproducing on a limited range of specific legume species. However, little is known about the transcriptional response of the plants to different aphid biotypes. To investigate pea defense mechanisms against the pea-adapted and pea non-adapted A. pisum biotypes, we analyzed the transcriptional responses

A pot experiment was conducted to evaluate the potential of six PGP microbial isolates (FM20, FM65, FM19, W22, OF5, and Control) to mitigate the adverse effects of drought stress (40% FC) on pea (Pisum sativum) compared to normal irrigation (80% FC). The results demonstrated that PGP inoculants significantly enhanced physiological, ionic, and yield parameters under both normal and stress conditions consistently outperforming the uninoculated control. Under drought stress, W22 maintained the highest Relative Water Content (88.5%), statistically similar to several normal treatments, indicating s

UNLABELLED: The long cultivation of field pea led to an enormous diversity which, however, seems to hold just little resistance against the ascochyta blight disease complex. The potential of below ground microbial symbiosis to prime the immune system of Pisum for an upcoming pathogen attack has hitherto received little attention. This study investigates the effect of beneficial microbes on the leaf proteome and metabolome as well as phenotype characteristics of plants in various symbiont interactions (mycorrhiza, rhizobia, co-inoculation, non-symbiotic) after infestation by Didymella pinodes.

The iron core within phytoferritin interior usually contains the high ratio of iron to phosphate, agreeing with the fact that phosphorus and iron are essential nutrient elements for plant growth. It was established that iron oxidation and incorporation into phytoferritin shell occurs in the plastid(s) where the high concentration of phosphate occurs. However, so far, the role of phosphate in iron oxidative deposition in plant ferritin has not been recognized yet. In the present study, Fe(II) oxidative deposition in pea seed ferritin (PSF) was aerobically investigated in the presence of phospha

Selected physico-chemical properties of pea legumin before and after succinylation have been investigated using isoelectric focusing, PAGE, SDS-PAGE, hydrophobicity measurements, SE-HPLC and RP-HPLC. Exhaustive succinylation shifted the I.P. of legumin from 4.75 to 3.5. The stepwise dissociation of legumin by increasing succinylation has been confirmed both by means of PAGE in a nondenaturing system, and by SE-HPLC. The results of SDS-PAGE provided evidence for the exposure of alpha-polypeptide chains in the native legumin. High succinylation resulted in a decrease of the surface hydrophobicit

BACKGROUND: Pea (Pisum sativum L.) is a valuable legume crop known for its high protein content. Heavy metal stress serious issue worldwide that stunted the growth of plants. Little is known about physiological and biochemical study of pea under trehalose and chromium conditions. This study tested how foliar application of trehalose improved the growth of two pea varieties (Supreme and Meteor) under chromium stress.
RESULTS: When pea plants were exposed to 100 µM Cr, shoot fresh weight dropped by 12.4% and 19.2%, root length by 16.2% and 16.1%, and total chlorophyll by 13.6% and 14.3% in Supr

Plants do not produce Vitamin B12, creating a nutrient insufficiency risk for those who do not consume animal-derived foods without supplementation. Furthermore, various diseases cause Vitamin B12 deficiency. Here, we establish an approach for B12 dietary supplementation that harnesses a horticultural technology to deliver the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of B12 within a single portion of a salad crop (pea shoots). We demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach in a commercial and scalable growing environment, conducted an economic evaluation, find that it has versatility for growers, d

Drought stress is a major limitation to global crop productivity, yet the molecular basis of drought responses in Pisum sativum (pea) a nutritionally important legume remains poorly understood. We hypothesized that drought induces coordinated transcriptional and proteomic reprogramming in pea chloroplasts and leaves, thereby activating photoprotective, antioxidant, and stress-responsive pathways. To investigate this, we applied integrated transcriptomic (Solexa-Illumina sequencing) and proteomic (iTRAQ) analyses, focusing on chloroplast-targeted transcripts and proteins. Our findings revealed

Ultraviolet radiation (UV) though harmful but is an important and unavoidable component of terrestrial ecosystem to which plants have been exposed since their migration from aquatic to land habitat. Incoming UV-B radiation and heavy metals abundance in contaminated soils are significant environmental threat affecting metabolic functions of plants through generation of reactive oxygen species. Plants have evolved mechanisms to counteract these reactive radicals and to repair the damage caused by UV-B and heavy metals. This study describes the impact of supplemental UV-B (sUV-B) and nickel (Ni)

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs as an important group of emerging environmental contaminants in irrigation water and soils can influence biochemical and physiological processes essential for growth and development in plants as non-target organisms. Plants are able to take up, transport, transform, and accumulate drugs in the roots. Root biomass in ten-days old pea plants was lowered by 6% already under 0.1 mg/L naproxen (NPX) due to a lowered number of lateral roots, although 0.5 mg/L NPX stimulated the total root length by 30% as against control. Higher section area (by 40%) in root tip

Molecular responses to cadmium (Cd) stress were studied in mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal Pisum sativum L. cv. Frisson inoculated with Glomus intraradices. Biomass decreases caused by the heavy metal were significantly less in mycorrhizal than in non-mycorrhizal plants. Real-time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction showed that genes implicated in pathways of Cd detoxification varied in response to mycorrhiza development or Cd application. Expression of a metallothionein-encoding gene increased strongly in roots of Cd-treated non-mycorrhizal plants. Genes encoding gamma-glutamylcys

Polysaccharides have hypoglycemic activity and pea protein has high nutritional value. The purified pea glycoprotein PGP2 has been shown to inhibit the activity of α-glucosidase and α-amylase in previous studies. To study the mechanism of PGP2-induced blood glucose lowering in vivo, this paper established a diabetic mouse model by intraperitoneal injection of STZ and high-fat diet, and evaluated the blood-glucose-lowering activity of the pea component PGP2 at different doses. The results showed that intragastric administration of PGP2 could effectively reduce diabetic weight loss and polyphagi

Pea seedlings (Pisum sativum L.) are young pea plants with the potential for sustainable cultivation; these plants are cost-effective and provide high nutritional value. Although numerous studies have explored the nutritional content and functionality of pea seedlings, a few reports exist on the regrowth of pea seedlings after the initial harvest of their edible parts. Hence, this study aimed to elucidate the effect of the growing environment during recultivation on the properties and functionalities of pea seedlings. The non-edible parts of commercially acquired pea seedlings were recultivate
