Periodicity pitch perception of retarded children.

In order to expand the body of information concerning auditory function in the presence of the generalized cortical dysfunction associated with severe mental retardation, the discrimination of periodicity pitch signals by nonverbal severely retarded children and adults of normal intelligence was examined using an operant conditioning adaptation of the psychophysical method of constant stimulus differences. The periodicity pitch difference limens (DLs) based on changes in repetition rate were compared with frequency DLs obtained from low (150 Hz) and high frequency (2200 Hz) sinusoids. Periodic

Cortical representation of pitch perception in mice.

Pitch perception is fundamental to speech and music, yet the neural representation of pitch in auditory cortex remains poorly understood. We hypothesized that mice rely on temporal cues for pitch perception because of their wide auditory filters and high-frequency hearing. To investigate, we developed a mouse auditory filter bank model that estimates the temporal pitch salience of complex tones. We then trained mice to discriminate low vs. high fundamental frequencies (F0s) in complex tones and found that modeled temporal pitch salience was highly correlated with behavioral discrimination sens

Perception of musical pitch in developmental prosopagnosia.

Studies of developmental prosopagnosia have often shown that developmental prosopagnosia differentially affects human face processing over non-face object processing. However, little consideration has been given to whether this condition is associated with perceptual or sensorimotor impairments in other modalities. Comorbidities have played a role in theories of other developmental disorders such as dyslexia, but studies of developmental prosopagnosia have often focused on the nature of the visual recognition impairment despite evidence for widespread neural anomalies that might affect other s

Training of pitch contour perception: Influence of pitch processing abilities and multisensory interactions.

Pitch contour processing is critical in music and speech processing, and is likely to be hampered in peripheral and central auditory disorders. Pitch processing is typically altered in congenital amusia, a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by deficits of music perception and production, which are related to altered pitch processing. In this study, we examined the effects of multisensory (audio-visual, AV) versus unisensory (auditory-only, A) pitch contour training on the ability to discriminate pitch direction changes in individuals with amusia and their matched control participants. A

Place-Pitch Interval Perception With a Cochlear Implant.

OBJECTIVES: Pitch is poorly perceived by cochlear implant (CI) users. However, as it is not well understood how pitch is encoded with electric stimulation, improving pitch representation with a CI is challenging. Changes in place of stimulation along the cochlea have been described as changes in pitch and can be accurately ranked by CI users. However, it remains unknown if place-pitch can be used to encode musical intervals, which are a necessary attribute of pitch. The objective of these experiments is to determine if place-pitch coding can be used to represent musical intervals with a CI. D

Pitch perception in children with autistic spectrum disorders.

This study investigated the accuracy of musical pitch detection in children with autistic spectrum disorders as compared with typically developing children. Seventeen children on the autistic spectrum (M(age) =9.34, SD(age) =1.12) and 13 typically developing, chronological age-matched children (M(age) =9.13, SD(age) =1.68) took part in the current study. Children were required to listen to four tones, which were paired with four different pictures and asked to learn the combinations. The children were then assessed for their ability to identify the previously learned tones, when they were pres

Cortical basis for dichotic pitch perception in developmental dyslexia.

The current study examined auditory processing deficits in dyslexia using a dichotic pitch stimulus and functional MRI. Cortical activation by the dichotic pitch task occurred in bilateral Heschl's gyri, right planum temporale, and right superior temporal sulcus. Adolescents with dyslexia, relative to age-matched controls, illustrated greater activity in left Heschl's gyrus for random noise, less activity in right Heschl's gyrus for all auditory conditions, and less activity in right superior temporal sulcus for a dichotic melody. Subsequent analyses showed that these group differences were at

Musical pitch perception with electrical stimulation of the cochlea.

Studies were undertaken to investigate the ability of a user of the Nucleus multi-electrode cochlear implant to judge pitch in the context of musical intervals. The subject had qualified as a musical instrument tuner before he received his implant, and was able to judge the intervals between electrical sensations with neither training nor the guidance of familiar melodies. The procedures used were interval estimation, and interval production by the method of adjustment. The pitch of the electrical stimulation was controlled by varying the pulse repetition rate, the active electrode position, o

Pure tone pitch perception and low-frequency hearing loss.

Pitch perception for pure tones was investigated in a group of listeners with low-frequency sensorineural hearing loss. Pitch judgments from each listener were compared with results from psycho-acoustic tasks which provide information on the "place" of cochlear response. The pitch measures employed were: (1) binaural pure-tone pitch matching in a listener with unilateral hearing loss, (2) octave judgments in listeners with musical ability, and (3) pitch-intensity functions in other listeners. Cochlear place of response was inferred from psychophysical tuning curves (PTC's). Two distinct types

Cumulative Enhancement in Naïve L3 Tone Perception: The Perception of Pitch and Phonation Type.

Previous research has shown that tonal second language (L2) experience can enhance the third language (L3) tone perception of native speakers of non-tone languages. However, tone is a multidimensional concept, and phonation type also serves as an important cue in the tone perception of some tone languages. In this study, 38 native English speakers of different Mandarin proficiency levels, 15 native English and 15 native Mandarin speakers, all of whom were naïve to the Wenzhou Wu dialect, participated in an AX discrimination task. The Wenzhou dialect was used for the naïve L3 stimuli because of

Global and local pitch perception in children with developmental dyslexia.

This study investigated global versus local pitch pattern perception in children with dyslexia aged between 8 and 11 years. Children listened to two consecutive 4-tone pitch sequences while performing a same/different task. On the different trials, sequences either preserved the contour (local condition) or they violated the contour (global condition). Compared to normally developing children, dyslexics showed robust pitch perception deficits in the local but not the global condition. This finding was replicated in a simple pitch direction task, which minimizes sequencing and short term memory

Perception of pitch contours in single words in alaryngeal speech.

The perception and production of pitch contours were investigated in single words produced by two groups of alaryngeal speakers: tracheo-oesophageal (TE) and oesophageal (E) speakers. High quality tape-recordings of three tonal patterns by four oesophageal and eight tracheo-oesophageal speakers in monosyllabic words were judged by a group of six speech and language therapy listeners. The results indicated that tonal patterns can be produced with a relatively high level of reliability for both speaker groups. Some individual speakers from both groups approached predicted normal levels. These fi

Binaural pitch perception in normal-hearing and hearing-impaired listeners.

The effects of hearing impairment on the perception of binaural-pitch stimuli were investigated. Several experiments were performed with normal-hearing and hearing-impaired listeners, including detection and discrimination of binaural pitch, and melody recognition using different types of binaural pitches. For the normal-hearing listeners, all types of binaural pitches could be perceived immediately and were musical. The hearing-impaired listeners could be divided into three groups based on their results: (a) some perceived all types of binaural pitches, but with decreased salience or musicali

Complex Pitch Perception Deficits in Dyslexia Persist Regardless of Previous Musical Experiences.

PURPOSE: Pitch perception is important for speech sound learning, and reading acquisition requires integration of speech sounds and written letters. Many individuals with dyslexia exhibit auditory perception deficits that may therefore contribute to their reading impairment given that complex pitch perception is crucial for categorizing speech sounds. Given rising interest in music training as a reading intervention, understanding associations between prior music experiences and pitch perception is important. This study explored the relationship between pitch perception skills and reading abil

Neural Mechanisms Underlying Musical Pitch Perception and Clinical Applications Including Developmental Dyslexia.

Music production and perception invoke a complex set of cognitive functions that rely on the integration of sensorimotor, cognitive, and emotional pathways. Pitch is a fundamental perceptual attribute of sound and a building block for both music and speech. Although the cerebral processing of pitch is not completely understood, recent advances in imaging and electrophysiology have provided insight into the functional and anatomical pathways of pitch processing. This review examines the current understanding of pitch processing and behavioral and neural variations that give rise to difficulties

Perception of Mandarin Chinese with cochlear implants using enhanced temporal pitch cues.

A cochlear implant (CI) signal processing strategy named F0 modulation (F0mod) was compared with the advanced combination encoder (ACE) strategy in a group of four post-lingually deafened Mandarin Chinese speaking CI listeners. F0 provides an enhanced temporal pitch cue by amplitude modulating the multichannel electrical stimulation pattern at the fundamental frequency (F0) of the incoming speech signal. Word and sentence recognition tests were carried out in quiet and in noise. The responses for the word-recognition test were further segmented into phoneme and tone scores. Off-line implementa

The Louder, the Longer: Object Length Perception Is Influenced by Loudness, but Not by Pitch.

Sound by itself can be a reliable source of information about an object's size. For instance, we are able to estimate the size of objects merely on the basis of the sound they make when falling on the floor. Moreover, loudness and pitch are crossmodally linked to size. We investigated if sound has an effect on size estimation even in the presence of visual information, that is if the manipulation of the sound produced by a falling object influences visual length estimation. Participants watched videos of wooden dowels hitting a hard floor and estimated their lengths. Sound was manipulated by (

Temporal Pitch Perception in Cochlear-Implant Users: Channel Independence in Apical Cochlear Regions.

Two-electrode stimuli presented on adjacent mid-array contacts in cochlear-implant users elicit pitch percepts that are not consistent with a summation of the two temporal patterns. This indicates that low-rate temporal rate codes can be applied with considerable independence on adjacent mid-array electrodes. At issue in this study was whether a similar independence of temporal pitch cues can also be observed for more apical sites of stimulation, where temporal cues have been shown to be more reliable than place cues, in contrast to middle and basal sites. In cochlear-implant recipients with s

Cochlear Implant Users can Effectively Combine Place and Timing Cues for Pitch Perception.

OBJECTIVES: The study objective was to characterize cochlear implant (CI) pitch perception for pure, complex, and modulated tones for frequencies and fundamental frequencies in the ecologically essential range between 110 and 440 Hz. Stimulus manipulations were used to examine CI users' reliance on stimulation place and rate cues for pitch discrimination. DESIGN: The study was a within-subjects design with 21 CI users completing pitch discrimination measures using pure, complex, and modulated tones. Stimulus manipulations were used to test whether CI users have better pitch discrimination for
