Fermentation metabolites from Lactobacillus gasseri and Propionibacterium freudenreichii exert bacteriocidal effects in mice.

Lactobacillus gasseri OLL 2716 promotes the elimination of Helicobacter pylori and is utilized in yogurts that are specifically labeled as health foods. On the other hand, milk whey fermented by Propionibacterium freudenreichii ET-3, which increases the numbers of Bifidobacterium, is effective for intestinal disorders. We previously demonstrated that oral administration of L. gasseri and P. freudenreichii fermentation metabolites (LP-FM) improved calf intestinal microflora and reduced the incidence of diarrhea. However, the detailed immunological mechanisms responsible for these effects remain

Carbon source-dependent metabolic states govern redox homeostasis and cofactor biosynthesis in Propionibacterium freudenreichii.

UNLABELLED: Microbial adaptation to fluctuating nutrient and oxygen conditions requires coordinated regulation of the metabolic network to maintain redox homeostasis within physicochemical and energetic constraints. While oxygen-dependent responses in Propionibacterium freudenreichii (PFR) have been characterized at the transcriptomic level, the role of carbon source in defining system-level metabolic states remains unclear. Here, we investigated carbon source-dependent metabolic reprogramming and cofactor biosynthesis in PFR strain DSM 20271T using label-free quantitative proteomics integrate

A novel dairy product fermented with Propionibacterium freudenreichii improves the riboflavin status of deficient rats.

OBJECTIVE: Riboflavin deficiency is common in many parts of the world, particularly in developing countries. The use of riboflavin-producing strains in the production of dairy products such as fermented milk, yogurt, and cheese is feasible and economically attractive because it would decrease the costs involved during conventional vitamin fortification and satisfy consumer demands for healthier foods. The present study in a rat bioassay assessed the response of administration of yogurt containing a riboflavin-producing strain of Propionibacterium freudenreichii on the riboflavin status of defi

The Cheese Matrix Modulates the Immunomodulatory Properties of Propionibacterium freudenreichii CIRM-BIA 129 in Healthy Piglets.

Propionibacterium freudenreichii is a beneficial bacterium, used as a cheese starter, which presents versatile probiotic properties. These properties are strain-dependent. We hypothesized they may also be delivery vehicle-dependent. In this study, we thus explored in healthy piglets how the cheese matrix affects the immunomodulatory properties of P. freudenreichii. During 2 weeks, three groups of weaned piglets consumed, respectively, P. freudenreichii as a liquid culture (PF-culture), P. freudenreichii under the form of a cheese (PF-cheese), or a control sterile cheese matrix (Cheese-matrix).

Combining selected immunomodulatory Propionibacterium freudenreichii and Lactobacillus delbrueckii strains: Reverse engineering development of an anti-inflammatory cheese.

SCOPE: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) constitutes a growing public health concern in western countries. Bacteria with anti-inflammatory properties are lacking in the dysbiosis accompanying IBD. Selected strains of probiotic bacteria with anti-inflammatory properties accordingly alleviate symptoms and enhance treatment of ulcerative colitis in clinical trials. Such properties are also found in selected strains of dairy starters such as Propionibacterium freudenreichii and Lactobacillus delbrueckii (Ld). We thus investigated the possibility to develop a fermented dairy product, combining both

Propionibacterium freudenreichii MJ2 Improves Dexamethasone-Induced Muscle Atrophy in Rats by Increasing Muscle Mass and Muscle Fiber Area.

Muscle atrophy refers to the loss or wasting of muscle tissue caused by medication, aging, disease, and injury. Propionibacterium freudenreichii MJ2 (MJ2) shows anti-inflammatory and anti-obesity properties. This study aimed to determine the effects of MJ2 on dexamethasone (DEX)-induced muscle atrophy in C2C12 myoblast cell line and rats. Heat-killed P. freudenreichii MJ2 (HK-MJ2) inhibited a decrease in the diameter of DEX-treated C2C12 myotubes. Additionally, it downregulated the expression of muscle atrophy- and apoptosis-related genes (MuRF-1, Atrogin-1, and Bax/Bcl-2) in DEX-treated C2C12

Efficacy of Lactobacillus animalis and Propionibacterium freudenreichii-Based Feed Additives in Reducing Salmonella-Associated Health and Performance Effects in Commercial Beef Calves.

Salmonella enterica, which causes typhoid fever, is one of the most prevalent food-borne pathogens. Salmonellosis in cattle can greatly impact a producer’s income due to treatment costs, decreased productivity of the herd, and mortality due to disease. Current methods of treatment and prevention for salmonellosis consist of antibiotics and vaccinations, but neither of these options are perfect. Probiotics, categorized as antibiotic alternatives, are living microorganisms that are added to animal feeds in appropriate quantities in order to benefit health and productivity in adult and newborn li

Valorization of fruit by-products: Vitamin B12 fortification in fruit pomace using a co-culture of propionic and lactic acid bacteria.

The agri-food industry generates large quantities of by-products, e.g., fruit pomace from juice and wine production, which represent underutilized sources of valuable compounds. The popularity of plant-based foods is steadily increasing due to growing concerns about human health, animal welfare, and environmental sustainability, highlighting the need for vitamin B12 fortification - plants cannot synthesize this essential micronutrient. This challenge is particularly relevant given the growing prevalence of B12 deficiency and its associated health risks. The aim of this study was to enrich poma

Effect of Direct-Fed Microbial Dosage on the Fecal Concentrations of Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli in Feedlot Cattle.

Contamination of beef products by Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli is a concern for food safety with a particular subset, the enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC), being the most relevant to human disease. To mitigate food safety risks, preharvest intervention strategies have been implemented with the aim to reduce EHEC in cattle. One class of interventions that has been widely used in feedlots is direct-fed microbials (DFMs), which can contain various dosing rates of probiotic bacteria. Here we compare the use of two different doses of a commercially available DFM on total EHEC load in a co

Interaction of Campylobacter spp. and human probiotics in chicken intestinal mucus.

Campylobacter is the most common cause of bacterial food-borne diarrhoeal disease throughout the world. The principal risk of human contamination is handling and consumption of contaminated poultry meat. To colonize poultry, Campylobacter adheres to and persists in the mucus layer that covers the intestinal epithelium. Inhibiting adhesion to the mucus could prevent colonization of the intestine. The aim of this study was to investigate in vitro the protective effect of defined commercial human probiotic strains on the adhesion of Campylobacter spp. to chicken intestinal mucus, in a search for

Biosynthesis of 32P-labelled hydroxocobalamin and a study of its behaviour in rats.

Using Propionibacterium freudenreichii and 32P-ATP, batches of 32P-labelled cobalamin (Cbl) were biosynthesized with a maximum specific activity of 61 microCi/mg, i.e. about 100 times higher than previously reported. Pharmacological doses mixed with 57Co-Cbl were injected subcutaneously in the form of hydroxo-Cbl into rats subsequently killed 5-20 days later. The two labelled Cbls were distributed in approximately the same way, the highest concentration being found in kidney (typical for rats) and about one-fifth of that in liver. These findings tallied with previous observations with radioact
