[Monitoring of radiation via CT (author's transl)].

The results presented in this article lead to the conclusion that it would be appropriate to demand control or monitoring of radiation via CT whenever complicated exposure to radiation is required. Such control appears mandatory in order to guarantee a sufficiently high tumour dosage and satisfactory protection or minimum burdening of the surrounding tissue. At first sight, it may seem that such CT operations are relatively costly. However, once the teamwork has been properly established, both the time required and the cost involved remain within reasonable limits and will probably not be grea

UNLAMINATED GAFCHROMIC EBT3 FILM FOR ULTRAVIOLET RADIATION MONITORING.

Measurement of ultraviolet (UV) radiation is important for human health, especially with the expanded usage of short wavelength UV for sterilization purposes. This work examines unlaminated Gafchromic EBT3 film for UV radiation monitoring. The authors exposed the film to select wavelengths in the UV spectrum, ranging from 207 to 328 nm, and measured the change in optical density. The response of the film is wavelength dependent, and of the wavelengths tested, the film was most sensitive to 254 nm light, with measurable values as low as 10 µJ/cm2. The film shows a dose-dependent response that e

Biological monitoring of three 60Co radiation incident victims.

Radiation-induced structural chromosomal aberrations were the only adverse effects found in three workers overexposed to 60Co gamma-radiation. Chromosomal analyses were performed on the 5th and 75th days after exposure. Hematologic follow-up was carried out on the 5th, 12th, 16th, and 75th days after exposure. Hematologic findings did not differ over time in any of the three exposed workers. In two workers, we found dicentric chromosomes, which are conventional indicators for exposure to ionizing radiation.

Individual monitoring for external radiation at accelerator facilities.

Individual monitoring at accelerator facilities is discussed, within the framework set out by the International Commission on Radiological Protection and with reference to the implementation of the recommendations of that body within the European Basic Safety Standards. Legislation in other parts of the world may differ, but a worldwide perspective on this subject would be too exhaustive. The fields at accelerator facilities are contrasted in terms of particle type and energy with those encountered at more conventional sites within the nuclear fuel cycle, medical applications and general indus

IMMUNOLOGICAL MONITORING OF THE PERSONNEL AT RADIATION HAZARDOUS FACILITIES.

The study of possible mechanisms resulting in changes in the immune system after exposure to ionizing radiation is an area that has not been thoroughly evaluated during recent years. This article presents an overview of immunological monitoring studies of personnel from the radiation-hazardous factories that took place over the past 20 years in Russia. The methodology of these studies is based on: (1) the preclinical evaluation of immune status of workers whose occupation involves potential exposure to ionizing radiation; (2) selecting at risk groups according to the nature of immune deficienc

[A simple measuring device for monitoring radiation in phototherapy].

A simple low cost device is described for measuring the irradiation intensity used in phototherapy of hyperbilirubinemia in newborns. The spectral selectivity of the sensor is adapted to the most effective wavelength for phototherapy. The device can be calibrated in W/m2. A description of calibration is given. When fluorescent lamps adapted to phototherapy are used, the accuracy of the device can be compared to that of commercially manufactured units. The sensitivity is sufficient to measure differences of irradiance significant for the therapy. The device is suitable to quantify phototherapy

Monitoring radiation exposure through skin swab multi-omic profiling.

Exposure to ionizing radiation poses major health risks across medical, occupational, and spaceflight settings, driving the need for rapid, non-invasive biodosimetry tools. As the body's most accessible organ and the most frequent site of radiation injury, the skin represents a promising interface for monitoring exposure. Using colonized human skin equivalents (coHSE; 0 Gy n = 8, 1 Gy n = 6, 4 Gy n = 6) and mice (n = 6/group) models, we performed multi-omic profiling, integrating metabolomics, lipidomics, and metagenomics, on skin swab samples collected after exposure to 0, 1, or 4 Gy of x-ray

Transit-guided radiation therapy: a novel patient monitoring approach.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Transit-Guided Radiation Therapy (TGRT) is a novel technique that uses the transit portal images (TPIs) acquired with Electronic Portal Image Devices (EPID) to quantify patient position errors during the treatment. It has been validated using anthropomorphic phantoms but a validation in a clinical setting was lacking. A pilot clinical study is presented to confirm our previous results. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective study was conducted between June and December 2022 with patients who received whole-brain or breast radiotherapy treatments. The selected treatments

Controlling and monitoring exposure to radiation from medical imaging.

Above a certain threshold dose, ionising radiation invariably provokes harmful effects such as burns, nausea and aplasia. Their severity increases with the dose received. There is no known threshold dose below which long-term harmful effects, such as cancer and genetic defects, do not occur. Ionising radiation comes from both natural and man-made sources. Worldwide, medical exposure accounts for 98% of the dose received from man-made sources. In France, the average dose per person received from diagnostic radiological examinations increased by more than 50% between 2002 and 2007. This increase

Noninvasive Monitoring of Radiation-Induced Salivary Gland Vascular Injury.

Xerostomia is a common side effect of radiation therapy (RT) in patients with head and neck cancer. However, limited information is available on the temporal dynamics of parenchymal and vascular changes in salivary glands following RT. To address this gap in knowledge, we conducted experimental studies in mice employing ultrasound (US) with coregistered photoacoustic imaging (PAI) to noninvasively assess the early and late changes in salivary gland size, structure, vascularity, and oxygenation dynamics following RT. Multiparametric US-PAI of salivary glands was performed in immune-deficient an

GdBr3: CE in a glass wafer as a nuclear radiation monitor.

A glass wafer that contains cerium-activated gadolinium-based scintillator has been tested as a nuclear radiation monitor. The detector is prepared by mixing powdered gadolinium and cerium (3+) bromides with alumina, silica, and lithium fluoride, melting the mixture at 1,400°C, and then quenching and annealing the glass. The resulting clear glass matrix emits stimulated blue light that can be collected by a conventional photomultiplier tube. Spectral analysis of radionuclides with this detector shows the energy peaks for alpha particles, the energy continuum for beta particles, the Compton con

Natural radiation monitoring and control treatment in the Hantepe beach.

This work has been carried out to monitor and decrease the natural radiation exposure at the Hantepe beach (Çanakkale, Turkey). A 0.25- to 0.30-m-thick layer of sand was scraped, removed and deposited in a safe place in order to decrease people's exposure to radiation and to relieve relevant radiophobia. The original mean value of dose rate on the beach was 1.38 μGy h(-1) at the contact and 1.0 μGy h(-1) at 1 m above the ground. After the scraping process, the mean value of dose rate decreased to 0.98 μGy h(-1) at the contact and to 0.78 μGy h(-1) at 1 m above the ground. One year later, these

Induction of gene expression as a monitor of exposure to ionizing radiation.

The complex molecular responses to genotoxic stress are mediated by a variety of regulatory pathways. The transcription factor TP53 plays a central role in the cellular response to DNA-damaging agents such as ionizing radiation, but other pathways also play important roles. In addition, differences in radiation quality, such as the exposure to high-LET radiation that occurs during space travel, may influence the pattern of responses. The premise is developed that stress gene responses can be employed as molecular markers for radiation exposure using a combination of informatics and functional

Management of Continuous Glucose Monitors in Radiation Oncology Patients.

Continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) are an increasingly prevalent electronic medical device used by patients with diabetes, offering several advantages over "finger sticks." There is a resulting rise in patients with CGMs seen in radiation oncology clinics. Manufacturers specify that CGMs should not be exposed to radiation (both diagnostic and therapeutic) due to the risk of device damage, creating challenges for patients and providers. We present a workflow for the management of CGMs in radiation oncology patients, beginning with systematic screening by providers and staff. We propose options

COMPARATIVE STUDY ON PERFORMANCE OF VARIOUS ENVIRONMENTAL RADIATION MONITORS.

After the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident, the radiation dose for first responders was not evaluated accurately due to lack of the monitoring data. It has been important to evaluate a radiation dose for workers in emergency response at a nuclear accident. In this study, a new device which can evaluate both of external and internal exposure doses was developed and the performance of various environmental radiation monitors including commercially available monitors were tested and compared from the viewpoint of an environmental monitoring at emergency situation. Monitoring and signaling of radiation-induced damage in mammalian cells.

This paper reviews the functions of and connections between the presumed DNA damage sensors: poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP), DNA-dependent protein kinase (DNA-PK), the protein product of the ataxia telangiectasia mutated (ATM) gene, and the tumor suppressor, p53. Recognition of DNA damage is associated with the generation of alarm signals. The possible alarm signals include synthesis of poly(ADP-ribose) polymers and initiation of phosphorylation cascades by kinases complexed with the DNA damage sensors, DNA-PK and ATM; the role of other factors is discussed, among them BRCA1 and 2, IRF-1 a

Thermal Monitoring of Tumor and Tissue State during Radiation Therapy - A Complex Case of Radiation Recall.

Common radiation dermatitis over radiation fields can be mild as minor erythema but can also be associated with blisters and skin desquamation. This phenomenon has been widely investigated and documented, especially in breast cancer patients. Obesity, smoking, and diabetes are known risk factors; however, we cannot predict the severity of radiation dermatitis prior to treatment. The overwhelming radiation recall dermatitis is an acute inflammatory reaction confined to previously irradiated areas that can be triggered when chemotherapy agents are administered after radiotherapy. This rare, pain
