Two hundred fifty patients who had 240 pathological changes of the lungs or mediastinum were examined using both scanned projection radiography (SPR) and standard film radiography, and the diagnostic accuracy of the procedures was compared. The use of standard film radiography led to diagnostic findings in 90.1% of the cases, while 94% of the images obtained at SPR provided diagnostic findings. The equivalent performance and, in part, the slight superiority obtained with the digital technique is a result of the better contrast resolution for objects with diameters greater than 2 mm. Dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) has become an essential tool in emergency radiology, significantly enhancing diagnostic capabilities for a variety of acute conditions. By utilising two distinct X-ray energy spectra, DECT differentiates materials based on their attenuation properties, providing detailed insights into tissue composition and pathology. In emergency settings, DECT is used in thoracic imaging for the detection of pulmonary embolism, in abdominal imaging to enhance the diagnosis and characterisation of conditions such as pancreatitis, appendicitis, gastrointestinal bleeding,

BACKGROUND: In medicine, x-rays are used to generate images of tissues and structures inside the body. X-rays are emitted by a source device and, after passing through the body, strike a detector, which forms an image of the tissues and structures the x-rays passed through. Dual-energy subtraction (DES) x-ray systems use radiation of different energy spectra (energy levels) and the principle of differential absorption characteristics of bone and soft tissue to produce separate bone and soft tissue x-ray images, in addition to a conventional x-ray image. The aim is to minimize potential issues

Dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) is a contemporary development by which the tissue can be characterized beyond conventional computed tomography. It improves tissue differentiation by exploiting the X-ray absorptive property of the tissues. Although still in its early stages, DECT utilization in pulmonary and cardiovascular pathologies is emerging. It includes applications such as pulmonary embolism, pulmonary hypertension, myocardial perfusion, and coronary artery assessment. This article discusses DECT principles and their current and emerging applications in thoracic imaging.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the image quality of virtual non-contrast (VNC) images calculated from dual-energy CT shoulder arthrography (DECT-A) and their ability to detect periosteal calcifications and intraarticular loose bodies.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In 129 shoulders of 123 patients, DECT arthrography (80 kV/140 kV) was performed with diluted iodinated contrast material (80 mg/ml). VNC images were calculated with image postprocessing. VNC image quality (1 = worst, 5 = best), dose parameters, and CT numbers (intraarticular iodine, muscle, VNC joint fluid density) were assessed.

Pancreatic diseases are difficult to diagnose due to their insidious onset and complex pathophysiological developmental characteristics. In recent years, dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) imaging technology has rapidly advanced. DECT can quantitatively extract and analyze medical imaging features and establish a correlation between these features and clinical results. This feature enables the adoption of more modern and accurate clinical diagnosis and treatment strategies for patients with pancreatic diseases so as to achieve the goal of non-invasive, low-cost, and personalized treatment.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a leading cause of death worldwide. We experimentally investigated the feasibility of two-dimensional xenon-enhanced dual-energy (XeDE) radiography for imaging of lung function. We optimized image quality under quantum-noise-limited conditions using a chest phantom consisting of a rectangular chamber representing the thoracic volume and PMMA slabs simulating x-ray attenuation by soft tissue. A sealed, air-filled cavity with thin PMMA walls was positioned inside the chamber to simulate a 2 cm thick ventilation defect. The chamber was ventilated wi

Gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding is a potentially life-threatening condition accounting for more than 300 000 annual hospitalizations. Multidetector abdominopelvic CT angiography is commonly used in the evaluation of patients with GI bleeding. Given that many patients with severe overt GI bleeding are unlikely to tolerate bowel preparation, and inpatient colonoscopy is frequently limited by suboptimal preparation obscuring mucosal visibility, CT angiography is recommended as a first-line diagnostic test in patients with severe hematochezia to localize a source of bleeding. Assessment of these pa

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The objective of this review is to critically discuss the latest evidence on the use of ultrasound and dual energy computed tomography (DECT) for the assessment of microcrystalline arthritis.
RECENT FINDINGS: Both techniques have been included in the classification and diagnostic criteria for gout, while only ultrasound appears in the diagnostic recommendations for CPPD. Regarding the management of the diseases, there is encouraging evidence for the use of both techniques for the follow-up of gout patients, while very few or null data are available for CPPD. Ultrasound has
