Rahnella aquatilis is an environmental Gram-negative bacillus that is rarely reported as human pathogen, being mainly associated with infections in immunocompromised patients. Herein we describe two cases of R. aquatilis isolates recovered from endotracheal aspirate cultures of different patients in a tertiary hospital located in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry and 16S rDNA gene sequencing were performed to confirm bacterial identification after the isolates being erroneously identified as Pantoea spp. by automated sys

The paper presents first description of class 1 integron in an environmental strain of Rahnella aquatilis, a rarely isolated Gram-negative bacterium of the family Enterobacteriaceae. The strain was isolated from the Warta river water, Poland. Class 1 integrase gene was detected by a PCR assay. Sequencing of the integron's variable region showed the presence of a dfrA1-aadA1 gene cassette array. The integron was located in a 54-kbp plasmid that was transferable to Escherichia coli J-53 recipient strain in a conjugation assay. The integron-bearing R. aquatilis strain was resistant to aminoglycos

Aedes albopictus is one of the most important vectors of Dengue, which poses a serious threat to public health. The bacterial microbiota has an effect on the parameters of mosquitos, such as larval development and fecundity, and it has emerged as a promising field to be explored for novel environmentally friendly control strategies. Rahnella sp. are present in many insects, including Ae. Albopictus, and play a role in bacterial-insect interactions; however, the role of the bacteria in mosquito biology has not yet been characterized. In this study, we characterized the Rahnella isolate RAeA1 ob

BACKGROUND Rahnella aquatilis is a facultatively anaerobic, gram-negative rod bacterium commonly found in freshwater. There are few cases of bacteremia caused by Rahnella aquatilis in the literature and even fewer cases reported of it causing sepsis in immunocompetent individuals. In this case report, we present a rare case of an immunocompetent individual who developed sepsis secondary to bacteremia caused by Rahnella aquatilis. CASE REPORT A 37-year-old immunocompetent man with cerebral palsy and chronic enterocutaneous fistulas, with an indwelling peripherally inserted central catheter (PIC

An 11-month-old girl with congenital heart disease developed infective endocarditis. Blood cultures revealed an unusual gram-negative rod, Rahnella aquatilis. The patient was successfully treated with a combination of netilmicin and ceftazidime. This is the first case report of infective endocarditis caused by this organism. R. aquatilis should be recognized as a clinical pathogen capable of causing life-threatening infection in children and adults.

OBJECTIVES: The growth, development, and accumulation of active compounds in Gastrodia elata are influenced by its mycorrhizosphere bacteria, which indirectly enhances host nutrition by stimulating the growth of the orchid mycorrhizal fungus Armillaria gallica. However, data on the mycorrhizosphere bacterial community of G. elata, especially on key functional strains, remain limited, restricting their application in medicinal plant cultivation. Here, we report the complete genome sequence of the plant growth-promoting bacterium Rahnella aceris HPDA25, which was isolated from the mycorrhizosphe

Iron deficiency in soil has crucially restricted agricultural and forestry production. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) produced by beneficial microorganisms have been proven to play an important role in inducing abiotic stress tolerance in plants. We investigated the effects of VOCs released by the rhizobacterium Rahnella aquatilis JZ-GX1 on the growth and root parameters of Arabidopsis thaliana under iron deficiency. The effect of the rhizobacterial VOCs on the gene expression in iron uptake and hormone signaling pathways were detected by RT-qPCR. Finally, the VOCs of the JZ-GX1 strain that

OBJECTIVES: Rahnella aquatilis is an environmental enterobacterial species with a chromosomal bla(RAHN-1) gene encoding extended-spectrum class A beta-lactamase RAHN-1. We describe the diversity of bla(RAHN) genes from two groups of strains, G1 and G2, isolated from raw fruits and vegetables, and the new class A beta-lactamase RAHN-2.
METHODS: MICs were determined by Etest. bla(RAHN) genes were amplified by PCR, sequenced, and cloned to produce RAHN-1 and RAHN-2 proteins whose kinetic parameters were determined.
RESULTS: All strains had similar beta-lactam resistance patterns. However, isola

Cat bites frequently lead to polymicrobial infections due to deep puncture wounds that inoculate oral flora into poorly oxygenated tissues. While Pasteurella multocida is the most commonly implicated organism, environmental and atypical pathogens may also play a role, yet often go unrecognized. This article reports a rare case of polymicrobial septic arthritis caused by a domestic cat bite in an immunocompetent adult, with isolation of Rahnella aquatilis, a freshwater-associated Enterobacterales species not previously reported in this context. A 33-year-old immunocompetent male presented with

Phytase plays an important role in crop seed germination and plant growth. In order to fully understand the plant growth-promoting mechanism by Rahnella aquatilis JZ-GX1, the effect of this strain on germination of maize seeds was determined in vitro, and the colonization of maize root by R. aquatilis JZ-GX1 was observed by scanning electron microscope. Different inoculum concentrations and Phytate-related soil properties were applied to investigate the effect of R. aquatilis JZ-GX1 on the growth of maize seedlings. The results showed that R. aquatilis JZ-GX1 could effectively secrete ind

From whole-cell DNA of a clinical isolate of the enterobacterial species Rahnella aquatilis, a beta-lactamase gene was cloned that encoded a chromosomally encoded Ambler class A enzyme, RAHN-1. RAHN-1, with a pI of 7.2, shares 76, 73, and 71% amino acid identity with the extended-spectrum beta-lactamase of chromosomal origin from Serratia fonticola and with the plasmid-mediated beta-lactamases CTX-M-2 and CTX-M-1, respectively. The hydrolysis spectrum of the clavulanic acid-inhibited RAHN-1 was expanded to cephalosporins such as cefuroxime, cefotaxime, and ceftriaxone, but not to ceftazidime.

Rahnella species are environmentally versatile bacteria widely distributed in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems; however, the genomic basis of formaldehyde detoxification and stress adaptation in cryoconite-associated Rahnella remains poorly understood. In this study, we performed phylogenomic, comparative genomic, pan-genomic, stress-response, and functional analyses of Rahnella sp. PAMC25617 isolated from polar cryoconite to investigate glutathione (GSH)-dependent formaldehyde detoxification and its evolutionary conservation. Genome-based phylogeny, average nucleotide identity (ANI), and di

Rahnella aquatilis is a Gram-negative bacterium commonly found in the environment. Previously associated with food spoilage, it has in the past been responsible for causing infection in humans, usually as an opportunistic pathogen. We report a case of a previously healthy female who was diagnosed with R. aquatilis bacteraemia. Careful history-taking confirmed she had received an intravenous infusion of presumed-contaminated vitamins immediately prior to presentation. As the global beauty-industry continues to expand, we should be vigilant of future similar cases.

The genus Rahnella has been isolated from human, fish, and water environments. We recently reported on the isolation and genomic identification of a novel pathogen R. aquatilis strain KCL-5 from crucian carp Carassius auratus. To investigate the evolution of bacterial virulence and resistance properties of R. aquatilis, comparative genomics analyses were performed for genus Rahnella strains including R. aquatilis, R. variigena, R. bruchi, and R. victoriana. This analysis provides up-to-date information on genus Rahnella genomic diversity, including comparative analyses of virulence and resista

Genomic information for bacteria within the genus Rahnella remains limited. Rahnella sp. JZ-GX1 was previously isolated from the Pinus massoniana rhizosphere in China and shows potential as a plant growth-promoting (PGP) bacterium. In the present work, we combined the GridION Nanopore ONT and Illumina sequencing platforms to obtain the complete genome sequence of strain JZ-GX1, and the application effects of the strain in natural field environment was assessed. The whole genome of Rahnella sp. JZ-GX1 comprised a single circular chromosome (5,472,828 bp, G + C content of 53.53%) with 4,483 prot

Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria are important for improving plant iron nutrition, but the interactions among inoculants, host plants and soil microorganisms have not been greatly explored. Rahnella aquatilis JZ-GX1 was applied to treat the increasingly serious iron deficiency chlorosis in Cinnamomum camphora, and the resulting improvement in chlorosis was determined by assessing the contents of chlorophyll, active iron, Fe2+ and antioxidant enzymes in leaves, the effects on the soil microbial community and the metabolism in the rhizosphere by high-throughput sequencing techniques and liqu
