Patient respiration is characterized by respiratory parameters, such as cycle, amplitude, and baseline drift. In treatment planning using four-dimensional computed tomography (4DCT) images, the target dose may be affected by variations in image reconstruction techniques and respiratory parameters. This study aimed to optimize 4DCT image reconstruction techniques for the treatment planning of lung stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) based on respiratory parameters using respiratory motion phantom. We quantified respiratory parameters using 30 respiratory motion datasets. The 4DCT images were

BACKGROUND: Cardiac and respiratory motions in clinical positron emission tomography (PET) are a major contributor to inaccurate PET quantification and lesion characterisation. In this study, an elastic motion-correction (eMOCO) technique based on mass preservation optical flow is adapted and investigated for positron emission tomography-magnetic resonance imaging (PET-MRI) applications.
METHODS: The eMOCO technique was investigated in a motion management QA phantom and in twenty-four patients who underwent PET-MRI for dedicated liver imaging and nine patients for cardiac PET-MRI evaluation.

This prospective exploratory study aimed to determine whether certain noninvasive advanced imaging techniques could estimate parasitic burden in heartworm-infested dogs; a noninvasive method is needed for ethical considerations and permitting longitudinal drug studies. Three cardiac-gated and respiratory-gated 3T MRI techniques and CT pulmonary angiography (CTPA) were performed in three healthy beagles to optimize imaging techniques. Once the imaging techniques were established, a pilot study was performed to determine which one of the MRI techniques would be used in an observer comparison stu

BACKGROUND: Free-breathing gated CBCT (gCBCT) is commonly prescribed for lung cancer patients undergoing respiratory gating radiotherapy. Recently, the nonstop gated CBCT (ngCBCT) has been proposed to significantly reduce scanning time and imaging dose while preserving high image quality.
PURPOSE: To implement the novel ngCBCT imaging technique on a C-arm linear accelerator (LINAC) and quantitatively compare its scan time and imaging dose with those of the current clinical gCBCT.
METHODS: ngCBCT was implemented via a customized XML file in the developer mode of a C-arm LINAC, while gCBCT was

OBJECTIVE: MR coronary angiography is most often performed using two-dimensional techniques. Although three-dimensional (3D) acquisitions do have important advantages, they take too long for a single breath-hold and are thus susceptible to respiratory motion artifacts. The purpose of this study was to investigate the accuracy of a unique respiratory-gated 3D MR angiographic technique in identifying the proximal coronary arteries in patients suspected of having coronary artery disease. In addition, we investigated the capability of this technique to detect proximal stenoses.

PURPOSE: Myocardial perfusion (MP) PET imaging is a powerful tool in risk assessment and stratification of patients with coronary artery disease. Involuntary organ motion degrades cardiac PET image resolution, while respiratory and/or cardiac gating to freeze the motion leads to noisier reconstructed images due to reduced counts in the gated frames. In this work, we propose an MRI-assisted dual motion correction method to compensate for respiratory and cardiac motion in MP PET data and study the impact of dual motion correction on MP defect detection using systematically designed experiments.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Radiotherapy for pancreatic cancer requires effective respiratory motion management and precise image guidance due to the proximity of multiple dose-limiting organs. Respiratory gating is commonly used for patients who cannot tolerate breath hold, with gated cone-beam computed tomography (gCBCT) routinely employed to verify gating thresholds and patient positioning. However, the gCBCT scans are lengthy (2-8 min). This study investigates the feasibility of a novel nonstop gated CBCT (ngCBCT) technique as a replacement for current clinical gCBCT, reducing scan time to ∼1

Non-invasive micro-CT imaging techniques have been developed to investigate lung structure in free-breathing rodents. In this study, we investigate the utility of retrospectively respiratory-gated micro-CT imaging in an emphysema model to determine if anatomical changes could be observed in the image-derived quantitative analysis at two respiratory phases. The emphysema model chosen was a well-characterized, genetically altered model (TIMP-3 knockout mice) that exhibits a homogeneous phenotype. Micro-CT scans of the free-breathing, anaesthetized mice were obtained in 50 s and retrospectively r

T1-weighted (T1W) pulse sequences are an indispensable component of clinical protocols in abdominal MRI but usually require multiple breath holds (BHs) during the examination, which not all patients can sustain. Patient motion can affect the quality of T1W imaging so that key diagnostic information, such as intrinsic signal intensity and contrast enhancement image patterns, cannot be determined. Patient motion also has a negative impact on examination efficiency, as multiple acquisition attempts prolong the duration of the examination and often remain noncontributory. Techniques for mitigation

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) imaging with X-rays are crucial diagnostic techniques in medicine, especially in oncology for evaluating the response to treatment. Body movement causes image blurring and synchronized gating to the respiratory and cardiac cycles is required. Degradation of MRI and CT imaging by the presence of metal in electronic respiratory sensors has limited their use, with a preference for pressure balloons for detecting respiration, but these are cumbersome and insensitive. Here, graphene's role is studied as an electromagnetically transparent

We wanted to describe a technique for the implementation of intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) with a real-time position monitor (RPM) respiratory gating system for the treatment of pleural space with intact lung. The technique is illustrated by a case of pediatric osteosarcoma, metastatic to the pleura of the right lung. The patient was simulated in the supine position where a breathing tracer and computed tomography (CT) scans synchronized at end expiration were acquired using the RPM system. The gated CT images were used to define target volumes and critical structures. Right pleural g

Respiratory motion significantly impacts the precision of radiotherapy for thoracic and abdominal tumours. This article updates a prior review on respiratory management in radiotherapy, focusing on emerging technologies and clinical implementations. Respiratory-induced tumour motion, ranging from 1 to 3cm during free breathing, introduces uncertainties in imaging, target delineation, and dose delivery. To mitigate these, various respiratory motion management strategies have been developed, encompassing techniques such as deep inspiration breath-hold, internal target volume (ITV), mid-position

UNLABELLED: Respiratory motion during PET has a significant effect on the quantification of radiotracer uptake in PET images. Even when respiratory motion is considered using PET gating techniques, inaccuracies in standardized uptake values can be caused by inappropriate attenuation correction due to a spatial mismatch between PET and CT. In this study, the effect of breath-hold CT imaging on the spatial match between CT and amplitude-based respiratory-gated PET images is investigated.
METHODS: Whole-body (18)F-FDG PET/CT imaging was performed in 52 patients with 125 lung lesions. (18)F-FDG P

PURPOSE: We hypothesize that in vivo respiratory-gated micro computed tomography (micro-CT) imaging can noninvasively provide structural and functional information about the lungs in a cigarette-exposure model of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in mice.
APPROACH: Female C57BL/6 mice were exposed to cigarette smoke or ambient air for 1, 3, or 6 months. Each mouse received a respiratory-gated micro-CT scan at baseline and another scan following the exposure period, while anaesthetized and free-breathing. Images were obtained representing end-expiration and peak inspiration, and measuremen

A comparison between three magnetic resonance coronary angiography (MRCA) respiratory motion suppression techniques was performed for both normal subjects and patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). MRCA images were acquired in 17 normal subjects and 15 patients with CAD, using conventional breath-hold MRCA, navigator echo (NE)-guided breath-hold MRCA (LED feedback), and NE-gated MRCA during free respiration. Image quality, diaphragm registration, and total acquisition time were assessed. Overall, there was poor diaphragm registration for conventional breath-holding compared with free res

Respiratory gating with navigator echo is a recent technique to detect diaphragm position in 3D magnetic resonance (MR) coronary angiography. The purpose of our study was to image proximal coronary arteries and to detect significant stenoses in patients with coronary artery diseases and to compare with contrast enhanced angiography results. Twenty patients with coronary artery diseases who were referred for conventional angiography underwent magnetic resonance angiography (MRA). Three-dimensional gradient echo volumes were acquired using cardiac and respiratory gating and fat suppression. Usin

PURPOSE: A major problem of free breathing coronary MR angiography (MRA) with respiratory navigator gating is low navigator efficiency and prolonged scan time due to irregular breathing patterns. 3D motion adapted gating (MAG) is a new adaptive navigator technique, which adapts in real time to changes of the end-expiratory position of diaphragm. This study evaluates the influence of 3D MAG on coronary MRA.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: In 3D MAG, two additional gating windows are grouped around the conventional window. Additionally, each gating window is divided into three bands assigned to differen

There is a clinical need for high-spatial-resolution, electrocardiography (ECG)-gated, respiratory-navigated contrast-enhanced (CE) thoracic MR angiography (MRA; hereafter, NAV CE MRA) robust to physiologic motion artifacts. Compared with first-pass gated techniques, ECG-triggered NAV MRA more effectively suppresses motion and exhibits greater acquisition efficiency and/or artifact mitigation than non-CE MRA. Gradient-echo or balanced steady-state free precession NAV CE MRA has conventionally used diaphragmatic navigators to minimize respiratory motion and parallel imaging for acquisition acce
