Photosensitizing anthraquinones from Heterophyllaea lycioides (Rubiaceae).

Seven anthraquinones were isolated from aerial parts of Heterophyllaea lycioides (Rusby) Sandwith (Rubiaceae), including three derivatives that have not been described before: a hetero-bianthraquinone identified as (R)-2-hydroxymethyl-2'methyl-1,1',6,6'-tetrahydroxy-5,5' bianthraquinone (lycionine), and two mono-chlorinated derivatives related to soranjidiol. One of them is a homo-bianthraquinone: (R)-7-chloro-2,2'-dimethyl-1,1',6,6'-tetrahydroxy-5,5' bianthraquinone (7-chlorobisoranjidiol), whereas the second halogenated derivative corresponds to a monomeric structure: 5-chloro-1,6-dihydroxy-

Caelospermum versus Coelospermum in Rubiaceae (Gentianales): their etymologies explained.

Caelospermum is the original spelling of the generic name, as it appeared in the protologue, but in literature and online databases, the variant spelling Coelospermum is often used. However, the confusion about the spelling is caused by a misinterpretation of the etymology. Here, we demonstrate that the original spelling by Blume should be retained.

Spontaneous poisoning by Palicourea marcgravii (Rubiaceae) in a sheep herd in southeastern Brazil.

Palicourea marcgravii (Rubiaceae) is considered the most important toxic plant affecting livestock farming in Brazil. This study describes an outbreak of spontaneous poisoning by P. marcgravii in sheep. Forty-nine sheep died while showing clinical signs of sudden death after having access to the plant. During the necropsy, P. marcgravii leaves were observed in the rumens of the animals. Histopathological analysis demonstrated hydropic degeneration of the kidneys. Monofluoracetate concentration obtained in Palicourea samples was 0.53% (5.3 μg/mg). These findings collectively indicate that the a

A comparative study of metal levels in leaves of some Al-accumulating Rubiaceae.

Concentrations of Al, Si, Fe, Mn, Cu and Ca were analysed in leaves of ten Rubiaceae species, most of which are Al accumulators, and these were compared with concentrations in one species of Melastomataceae. Quantitative data confirmed the distribution of Al accumulation as previously determined by semi-quantitative tests, and suggest that there is an apparent congruency between the shoot Al concentration and the number of accumulators within a certain genus or tribe. Al accumulators within the Rubiaceae are most characteristic of the Rubioideae subfamily, although a second origin is likely in
