Allium sativum, Rosmarinus officinalis, and Salvia officinalis Essential Oils: A Spiced Shield against Blowflies.

Blowflies are known vectors of many foodborne pathogens and unintentional human ingestion of maggots by meat consumption may lead to intestinal myiasis. In fact, the control of insect pests is an important aspect of industrial and home-made food processing and blowflies (Diptera: Calliphoridae), which are among the most important pests involved in the damage of meat products. Most spices, largely used in food preparations and industry, contain essential oils that are toxic and repellent against insects and exert antimicrobial activity. In this study, we assessed the electro-antennographic resp

Supercritical Antisolvent Fractionation of Antioxidant Compounds from Salvia officinalis.

The increasing interest towards greener antioxidants obtained via natural sources and more sustainable processes encourages the development of new theoretical and experimental methods in the field of those compounds. Two advanced separation methods using supercritical CO2 are applied to obtain valuable antioxidants from Salvia officinalis, and a first approximation to a QSAR model relating molecular structure with antioxidant activity is explored in order to be used, in the future, as a guide for the preselection of compounds of interest in these processes. Separation experiments through antis

Potentiation of antimicrobial activity of aminoglycosides by carnosol from Salvia officinalis.

We found that a crude extract from Salvia officinalis (sage) reduced the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of aminoglycosides in vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE). We isolated the effective compound from the extract and identified it as carnosol, one of diterpenoids. Carnosol showed a weak antimicrobial activity, and greatly reduced the MICs of various aminoglycosides (potentiated the antimicrobial activity of aminoglycosides) and some other types of antimicrobial agents in VRE. Carnosic acid, a related compound, showed the similar activity. The effect of carnosol and carnosic acid

Acute Toxicity by Salvia Officinalis: A Rare Cause of Intestinal Sub-Occlusion.

Salvia officinalis is a perennial plant commonly used in culinary and medical preparations. Its large intake is usually related to psychiatric disorders (such as pica) and might induce different symptoms (e.g. vomiting, nausea, diarrhoea, salivation, arterial hypertension, tachycardia, vertigo, flushes, cyanosis and convulsions) likely ascribable to pro-cholinergic effects of various constituents. The identification of this toxicity is challenging because of its rarity and possible underlying psychiatric comorbidities. Herein we describe the case of a schizophrenic 56-year-old male admitted to

Salvia officinalis L.: Antitrypanosomal Activity and Active Constituents against Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense.

As part of our studies on antiprotozoal activity of approved herbal medicinal products, we previously found that a commercial tincture from Salvia officinalis L. (common Sage, Lamiaceae) possesses high activity against Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense (Tbr), causative agent of East African Human Trypanosomiasis. We have now investigated in detail the antitrypanosomal constituents of this preparation. A variety of fractions were tested for antitrypanosomal activity and analyzed by UHPLC/+ESI QqTOF MS. The resulting data were used to generate a partial least squares (PLS) regression model that hig

Drinking of Salvia officinalis tea increases CCl(4)-induced hepatotoxicity in mice.

In a previous study, the drinking of a Salvia officinalis tea (prepared as an infusion) for 14 days improved liver antioxidant status in mice and rats where, among other factors, an enhancement of glutathione-S-transferase (GST) activity was observed. Taking in consideration these effects, in the present study the potential protective effects of sage tea drinking against a situation of hepatotoxicity due to free radical formation, such as that caused by carbon tetrachloride (CCl(4)), were evaluated in mice of both genders. Contrary to what was expected, sage tea drinking significantly increase

Comparison of the Protective Effect of Salvia officinalis and Rosmarinus officinalis Infusions Against Hepatic Damage Induced by Hypotermic-Ischemia in Wistar Rats.

We aimed to evaluate, in this study, the effect of Rosmarinus officinalis L. and Salvia officinalis L. in the amelioration of liver hypothermic conservation in male wistar rats. Livers from each rat were collected and preserved for 24 h at 4 °C in a Krebs solution with or without increasing doses of sage or rosemary infusions (25, 50, and 100 mg/mL). Liver hypothermic conservation induced a decrease in the activity of superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase and a significant increase in lipid peroxidation. S. officinalis L. infusion at 25 mg/mL normalized this oxidative dist

Oral Salvia officinalis phenolics abolish mortality and mitigate inflammation in acute TNBS murine colitis.

BACKGROUND: This study is the first to evaluate a phenolic extract of Salvia officinalis in the TNBS murine model of colitis. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) involves transmural oxidative and nitrosative stress that up-regulates inducible nitric-oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclo‑oxygenase-2 (COX-2). Although phenolic constituents of S. officinalis are anti-inflammatory in vitro, their efficacy has never been tested in the trinitrobenzene-sulphonic acid (TNBS) model of colitis. METHODS: Aqueous-ethanolic sage leaves were extracted and standardized [(total phenolics = 6208 ± 200 mg gallic acid e

Antitrypanosomal potential of Salvia officinalis terpenoids-rich fraction in Trypanosoma evansi-infected rat model.

UNLABELLED: BACKGROUND TRYPANOSOMA EVANSI : (T. evansi) is a major protozoan disease that affects animals, including camels, and causes substantial economic detriments. The failure to control T. evansi infections is due to the unavailability of vaccines and the development of resistance to existing chemical drugs. In this study, we evaluated the effect of Salvia officinalis terpenoids-rich fraction on the degree of parasitemia and associated pathological alterations in rats experimentally infected with T. evansi. METHOD: Eighty adult male rats were equally divided into 4 groups. The first gro
