5-Item sino-nasal outcome test and 22-item sino-nasal outcome test relationship with endoscopic and radiologic scores in chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps.

BACKGROUND: The 22-item sino-nasal outcome test (SNOT-22) is a frequently used patient-recorded outcome measure in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNPs). Objective findings of nasal polyps and paranasal sinus inflammation are frequently graded using nasal polyp score (NPS) and Lund-Mackay Score (LMS), respectively. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate a novel, abbreviated, rhinology-focused, five-domain SNOT-5 questionnaire because we had anecdotally noticed a relative disconnect between SNOT-22 and endoscopy and imaging scores. METHODS: We performed a retrospective, cross-secti

The Sino-Nasal Outcome Test (SNOT): can we make it more clinically meaningful?

OBJECTIVE: To test whether subscales should be used when analyzing the Sino-Nasal Outcome Test (SNOT). STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: Prospective cohort study involved 87 acute NHS hospitals in England and Wales. RESULTS: With the use of exploratory factor analysis we found evidence for the existence of four unique constructs within the SNOT. Two constructs address symptoms (rhinologic and ear/facial) and two address aspects of health-related quality of life (psychological issues and sleep function). Subscales of the SNOT that correspond to these constructs provided clinically meaningful informat

Balloon sinuplasty: two-year follow up using Sino-Nasal Outcome Test-22 outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Balloon sinuplasty is a relatively new surgical technology proposed as a less invasive way of treating chronic rhinosinusitis and frontal sinus disease. It is crucial to monitor safety and efficacy to allow informed clinical decisions and appropriate counselling of patients. There are few papers with long-term follow up. METHOD: Patients were selected for surgery based on symptoms of frontal pain and pressure or headache, pre-operative Sino-Nasal Outcome Test-22 scores, and computed tomography findings. All were resistant to appropriate medical therapy. Balloon sinuplasty was perf

Concordance Between an Adaptive Sino-Nasal Outcome Test and Imaging Results in Chronic Rhinosinusitis.

IMPORTANCE: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a highly prevalent, multifactorial, inflammatory condition commonly assessed using the 22-item Sino-Nasal Outcome Test (SNOT-22). SNOT-22 has been characterized by observed discordance between its subjective outcomes and objective imaging results, a known potential feature of instruments validated for clinical research. Improved concordance between patient-reported outcomes and diagnostic tests may enhance synergy between research and daily clinical queries. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the findings of a novel adaptive SNOT instrument are associa

Validation of an Allergic Rhinitis Instrument That Synergizes With the Sino-Nasal Outcome Test.

BACKGROUND: Allergic rhinitis (AR) and chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) frequently co-occur with shared symptomatology, such that evaluating both entities concurrently yet discretely is of help. Previously validated options, however, may require more than 45 questions and introduce redundant content at each administration. We thus assessed whether a novel AR-specific instrument, which has synergy with the Sino-Nasal Outcome Test (SNOT-22/26/29) used in CRS, is valid for research and clinical care. METHODS: Patients who prospectively completed the proposed AR-specific and SNOT instrument variation
