Sleep Pharmacology: Medications Affecting Sleep and Medications to Facilitate Sleep.

Both therapeutic and nontherapeutic medications have a profound influence on sleep architecture, a vital component of overall health. Optimizing patient outcomes requires a clear understanding of how commonly prescribed drug classes affect the quality, duration, and structure of sleep. Clinicians should carefully consider these pharmacologic effects when selecting or modifying treatment regimens, particularly in patients with comorbidities or underlying sleep disorders. The widespread use of herbal and over-the-counter preparations further underscores the importance of comprehensive medication

[Veronal, in Lord Edgware Dies: A Double-edged Sword of Sedation and Addiction].

Veronal, introduced during the early 20th century was widely used as a sleeping pill at the time, and this drug is mentioned in Agatha Christie's novels. Research has proved that in addition to their sedative effects, Veronal and other sleeping pills with similar mechanisms of action are associated with undesirable effects that can lead to addiction and overdose. Barbiturate-induced deaths include the high-profile suicides of the famous American actress Marilyn Monroe and Ryunosuke Akutagawa, a prolific Japanese writer and poet. Soseki Natsume attempted an overdose of sleeping pills; however,

Sleep disturbances after deployment: National Guard soldiers' experiences and strategies.

Sleep deprivation and sleep disturbance are pervasive among military personnel during and after combat deployment. However, occupational and other constraints often influence military workers to decline behavioral health services and prescription pharmaceutical sleep aids. This article, drawing on ethnographic interviews with National Guard veterans of combat deployment, demonstrates that soldiers with sleep disturbance frequently manage symptoms without medical supervision and by using ad hoc methods including alcohol use. Findings suggest the potential significance of further research into t

Precipitating pharmakologies and capital entrapments: narcolepsy and the strange cases of Provigil and Xyrem.

Since the mid-1990s, Americans have been made more aware of chronic sleep deprivation and sleep disorders exacerbated by dominant temporal regimes of work, school, and family life, primarily through increased medical and media attention. Concomitantly, Americans have turned to medical treatments and pharmaceutical cocktails to achieve normalcy rather than attending to the social and cultural causes of sleep sickness. This turn toward pharmaceuticalization is aided in part by the proliferation of medical disorders and the pharmaceuticals marketed to treat them (e.g., "excessive daytime sleepine

Progress Toward an Ideal Sleeping Pill.

Thirty percent of Americans report insomnia. After eliminating obvious causes, the best therapy for insomnia is cognitive behavioral therapy, but this is not widely available. However, all the known oral sleeping aides are generally unsatisfactory. Recently, a new class of safe, nonaddicting, mechanism-based hypocretin blockers have been developed. Herein we review the information not only for insomnia but also for narcolepsy.

Single-use suvorexant for treating insomnia during overnight polysomnography in patients with suspected obstructive sleep apnea: a single-center experience.

PURPOSE: Although patients with suspected obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) might suffer difficulty in falling asleep during overnight polysomnography (PSG), standard hypnotics to obtain sleep during PSG have not been established. The aim of this study was to investigate the safety and efficacy of a new hypnotic agent, suvorexant, a dual orexin receptor antagonist, for insomnia in suspected OSA patients during in-laboratory PSG. PATIENTS AND METHODS: An observational study was conducted during PSG for 149 patients with suspected OSA who had no insomnia at home. Patients with difficulty in falling

Examining the relationship between sleep quality and depressive symptoms in Korean women engaged in soccer during the coronavirus pandemic.

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic has caused sudden changes to daily lives, such as self-isolation and social distancing, and has negatively affected sleep quality and patterns. The resulting psychological discomfort has caused many Korean women to experience depressive moods. Vigorous physical activity is considered effective in improving sleep quality and alleviating depressive symptoms. As a form of vigorous physical activity, soccer could be used to improve women's mental health. This study aimed to ascertain the effects of playing soccer on sleep quality and depressive symptoms in women

Aiding sleep in type 2 diabetes: therapeutic considerations.

Insomnia and obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) are more prevalent in patients with type 2 diabetes than in the general population. Both insomnia and OSA have been linked to cardiometabolic alterations (eg, hypertension, increased activity of the sympathetic nervous system, and systemic insulin resistance) that can exacerbate the pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes. Improvement of sleep in patients with diabetes could therefore aid the treatment of diabetes. To help health practitioners choose the best clinical tool to improve their patients' sleep without detrimentally affecting glucose regulation

'It's like Taking a Sleeping Pill': Student Experience of Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR) to Promote Health and Mental Wellbeing.

Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR) is purposely elicited by some individuals to promote health and mental wellbeing. The aim of the current study was to explore how ASMR is used and its perceived benefits in a student population. We employed semi-structured qualitative interviews, with eight female students who self-reported as ASMR-sensitive users. Inductive thematic analysis, underpinned by a phenomenological framework, was applied to the data. Two themes, each with three subthemes, were identified; these highlighted the journey from first discovering ASMR to present experience and

The effects of zolpidem in obstructive sleep apnea - An open-label pilot study.

New knowledge on hypnotics and their effects on the phenotypic causes of obstructive sleep apnea indicate that zolpidem has therapeutic potential for certain patients. Specifically, zolpidem increases the threshold for arousal threshold and pharyngeal dilator muscle responsiveness. However, the effects of a standard dose of zolpidem (10 mg) on obstructive sleep apnea severity and symptoms have not been investigated. In an open-label pilot study, 12 unselected people with obstructive sleep apnea were recruited following a diagnostic in-laboratory sleep study. Participants then returned for a si

The effect of COVID-19 pandemic on sleep-related problems in adults and elderly citizens: An infodemiology study using relative search volume data.

COVID-19 has had a substantial national impact in South Korea, causing negative psychological responses including sleep-related problems. Literature indicates sleep problems among the general population have been reported to be as high as around 35.7% during the first 8 months of COVID-19. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on sleep problems among the general population using relative search volume (RSV) data, and whether there are any differences by age and time periods spanning before and during the pandemic. RSV data was collected from the mo

Polysomnographic assessment of suvorexant in patients with probable Alzheimer's disease dementia and insomnia: a randomized trial.

INTRODUCTION: We evaluated the clinical profile of the orexin receptor antagonist suvorexant for treating insomnia in patients with mild-to-moderate probable Alzheimer's disease (AD) dementia. METHODS: Randomized, double-blind, 4-week trial of suvorexant 10 mg (could be increased to 20 mg based on clinical response) or placebo in patients who met clinical diagnostic criteria for both probable AD dementia and insomnia. Sleep was assessed by overnight polysomnography in a sleep laboratory. The primary endpoint was change-from-baseline in polysomnography-derived total sleep time (TST) at week 4.

Efficacy of Ramelteon, Suvorexant, and Lemborexant for Delirium Prevention in Hospitalized Patients: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Delirium is a prevalent complication among hospitalized patients, particularly in older adults and ICU populations, and it is associated with poor prognosis. Pharmacologic interventions targeting sleep-wake regulation and neurobiologic pathways, such as orexin receptor antagonists and melatonin receptor agonists, offer promising strategies for delirium prevention. Our objective was to evaluate the preventive efficacy of suvorexant, lemborexant, and ramelteon in reducing delirium prevalence and associated clinical outcomes. DATA SOURCES: We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, C

'It's Pure Bliss': Pharmaceutical pleasures in later-life use of sleeping medication.

While research on prescribed sleeping medications has largely focused on risks and regulation, this paper examines a less explored dimension: the pleasures of long-term use. Drawing on qualitative interviews and diaries with 38 UK users aged 65+, it examines not only pharmacological effects but also the emotional, sensory, and symbolic dimensions of use, showing how pharmaceutical effects are enacted through embodied routines, expectations and everyday practices. Rather than incidental to therapeutic intent, pleasure is shown to be central to the enduring appeal and embeddedness of sleeping me
