[Sleep bruxism in children].

Bruxism is defined as repetitive activity of the masticatory muscles, characterized by clenching the teeth or teeth grinding and/or by tapping and swaying. This study investigated sleep bruxism. The etiology is multifactorial: mainly central (neuropathic disorder, anxiety) but also genetic and local (posture, mouth breathing). The diagnosis is based primarily on the anamnesis and examination of dental wear and progression over time (photos and dental castings). A diagnostic guide is proposed in this article. Frequently found in children, bruxism is not always considered pathological. The sever

Pharmacotherapy for sleep bruxism.

BACKGROUND: Sleep bruxism is an oral activity characterized by involuntary teeth grinding or clenching during sleep. Several forms of treatment have been proposed for this disorder, including behavioural, dental and pharmacological strategies. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of pharmacological therapy for the treatment of sleep bruxism compared with other drugs, no treatment or placebo. SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) (Issue 8, 2014), MEDLINE (1966 to August 2014), EMBASE (1980 to August 2013) and LILACS (1982 to A

Sleep Bruxism and Pain.

Bruxism is an oral behavior that may lead to repetitive jaw-muscle activity characterized by clenching or grinding of the teeth and/or by bracing or thrusting of the mandible with 2 distinct circadian manifestations: sleep bruxism or awake bruxism. They share common risk factors and lead to similar consequences for the masticatory system but may have different etiology and pathophysiology. This oral behavior has been associated with tooth wear, masticatory muscle tenderness, headaches, and painful temporomandibular disorders. Available scientific evidence does not support the view that bruxism

The effect of the arousal threshold on sleep bruxism intensity in coexisting sleep apnea and sleep bruxism: a polysomnographic study.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is often accompanied by sleep bruxism (SB). A low respiratory arousal threshold (AT) may contribute to the induction or exacerbation of SB. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of the AT on the intensity of bruxism in individuals with OSA and SB. The prospective observational study was undertaken in 117 subjects with suspected sleep disorder (47% females, average age 44.83 years) who undergone video-polysomnography. Among the study participants, 77 (64.1%) were found to have a low AT, while 42 (35.9%) had a high AT. Participants with low AT's had signifi

Sleep bruxism in patients with sleep-disordered breathing.

The aim was to test the hypothesis of a direct association between sleep-disordered breathing and sleep bruxism. The frequency of masseter contraction (MC) episodes and rhythmic jaw movements (RJM) was measured in patients with mild and moderate obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). The diagnosis of sleep bruxism was made from a combination of questionnaire, clinical observation and all-night polysomnographic recording which included masseter electromyography. A total of 21 patients (19 males/two females, mean age 40.0 years+/-9.2 SD) were randomly selected from a provisional diagnosis of snoring an

Sleep bruxism: an overview for clinicians.

Bruxism is characterised by clenching or grinding of the teeth due to contraction of the masseter, temporalis and other jaw muscles. Bruxism may lead to masticatory muscle hypertrophy, tooth surface loss, fracture of restorations or teeth, hypersensitive or painful teeth and loss of periodontal support. Sleep bruxism has previously been viewed as a dysfunctional movement or pathological condition, whereas it is now accepted as a centrally controlled condition with various systemic risk factors. It has been postulated that sleep bruxism may have a protective role during sleep, for example in re

[Sleep bruxism in children and adolescents].

Bruxism is a rhythmic masticatory muscle activity, characterized by teeth grinding and clenching. This is a phenomenon mainly regulated by the central nervous system and peripherally influenced. It has two circadian manifestations, during sleep (sleep bruxism) and awake states (awake bruxism). Bruxism is much more than just tooth wearing. It is currently linked to orofacial pain; headaches; sleep disorders; sleep breathing disorders, such as apnea and hypopnea sleep syndrome; behavior disorders, or those associated with the use of medications. It is also influenced by psycho-social and behavio

Effect of Altered Sleep Duration on Sleep Bruxism.

INTRODUCTION: Inconsistent findings have been reported regarding the relationship between sleep bruxism (SB) and sleep quality; therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of sleep deprivation (SD) on masticatory muscle activity during sleep. METHODS: Twenty-eight healthy participants were subjected to a five-day experimental protocol involving different sleep conditions, including baseline sleep (BS), one night of SD, and two nights of recovery sleep (RS1 and RS2). A portable electromyography device was used to measure SB events, and a Sleep Profiler device (Advance

CRITICAL APPRAISAL. Sleep Bruxism and Sleep-Disordered Breathing.

Sleep bruxism (SB) is a repetitive jaw muscle activity with clenching or grinding of the teeth during sleep. SB is characterized by what is known as rhythmic masticatory muscle activity (RMMA). RMMA is the laboratory polysomnographic finding that differentiates SB from other oromandibular movements seen during sleep. Most often RMMA episodes are associated with sleep arousal. Some patients will report similar complaints related to both SB and sleep disordered breathing (SDB). There are some reports that would suggest that SB is a result of SDB. It has has been postulated that SB is a compensat

Sleep Bruxism in Respiratory Medicine Practice.

Sleep bruxism (SB) consists of involuntary episodic and repetitive jaw muscle activity characterized by occasional tooth grinding or jaw clenching during sleep. Prevalence decreases from 20% to 14% in childhood to 8% to 3% in adulthood. Although the causes and mechanisms of idiopathic primary SB are unknown, putative candidates include psychologic risk factors (eg, anxiety, stress due to life events, hypervigilance) and sleep physiologic reactivity (eg, sleep arousals with autonomic activity, breathing events). Although certain neurotransmitters (serotonin, dopamine, noradrenalin, histamine) h

Neurobiological mechanisms involved in sleep bruxism.

Sleep bruxism (SB) is reported by 8% of the adult population and is mainly associated with rhythmic masticatory muscle activity (RMMA) characterized by repetitive jaw muscle contractions (3 bursts or more at a frequency of 1 Hz). The consequences of SB may include tooth destruction, jaw pain, headaches, or the limitation of mandibular movement, as well as tooth-grinding sounds that disrupt the sleep of bed partners. SB is probably an extreme manifestation of a masticatory muscle activity occurring during the sleep of most normal subjects, since RMMA is observed in 60% of normal sleepers in the

Bruxism and orofacial movements during sleep.

Several issues remain to be clarified in the future research and management of SB. It is important to differentiate SB from other normal sleep orofacial activities and concomitant sleep disorders. Other orofacial activities may obscure the diagnosis of SB and may give an ambiguous clinical picture when evaluating treatment efficacy. Laboratory recordings provide a more specific diagnosis. Most of the clinical signs (e.g., tooth wear, masseter hypertrophy) are not exclusive to SB but could be concomitant with other habits or activities during wakefulness. No pathologic features in the central n

Sleep-Related Breathing Disorders and Bruxism.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) syndrome is a sleep-related breathing disorder, due mainly to peripheral causes, characterized by repeated episodes of obstruction of the upper airways, associated with snoring and arousals. The sleep process fragmentation and oxygen desaturation events lead to the major health problems with numerous pathophysiological consequences. Micro-arousals occurring during sleep are considered to be the main causal factor for night jaw-closing muscles activation called bruxism. Bruxism is characterized by clenching and grinding of the teeth or by bracing or thrusting of th

Sleep bruxism, awake bruxism and headache in children and adolescents: a scoping review.

A scoping review was carried out with the aim of mapping the existing literature on the association between sleep/awake bruxism and primary headache (migraine and tension headache) in children and adolescents. This scoping review followed the method proposed by Arksey & O'Malley and the Joanna Briggs Institute Manual for Evidence Synthesis and was reported following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses-Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR). The methods were registered in the Open Science Framework (<osf.io/8mtv4>). The following was the guiding question:

Sleep stage dynamics in young patients with sleep bruxism.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: We hypothesized that sleep stage dynamics are different in patients with sleep bruxism (SB) and that these changes are associated with the occurrence of rhythmic masticatory muscle activity (RMMA). METHODS: Fifteen healthy controls and 15 patients with SB underwent overnight polysomnography. Sleep variables and survival curves of continuous runs of each sleep stage were compared between the groups. Stage transition dynamics and the probability of stage fragmentation were analyzed for three epochs before and after the epoch with RMMA. Survival curves of continuous runs of eac

[Sleep bruxism : state of the art and management].

Although well studied since the 50's, bruxism remains a largely unknown pathology. Its origin is complex, mixing psychological as well as neurological, odontological and hypnic aspects. However, the few analyzes performed on this topic have allowed to set convincing etiopathological hypotheses, including central dysregulation of the dopaminergic system as well as of the neuro-masticatory system. To avoid harmful consequences as headaches, temporomandibular disorders and premature dental scuffs / fractures, it is mandatory to diagnose bruxism as early as possible. For this purpose, and in addit
