The role of the posterior cerebellum in social cognition is well established; however, it is still unclear whether different cerebellar subregions contribute to different social cognitive processes by exerting specific functions. Here, we employed transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in male and female healthy humans to test the hypothesis of the existence of a medial-to-lateral gradient in the functional organization of the posterior cerebellum, according to which the phylogenetically newer cerebellar hemispheres are involved in tasks requiring higher-level social inferences whereas vermal

INTRODUCTION: Education in Latin America operates within deeply stratified socio-spatial contexts. Despite extensive research on educational inequality, a critical gap persists in understanding how multidimensional social class - structured through economic, cultural, and social capital - interacts with residential and school segregation to produce differentiated educational trajectories across the full schooling cycle. Drawing on Bourdieusian field theory, this study examines metropolitan Bogotá as a paradigmatic case of a highly stratified Latin American metropolis in which class and territo

This study examines how class-based network homogeneity evolves over time and whether intragenerational social mobility reshapes personal network composition in Chile. Drawing on four waves of longitudinal data from the Chilean Longitudinal Social Survey (ELSOC, 2016-2023), we assess the extent to which class stability and different forms of social mobility-conjunctural, structural, and cumulative-influence the degree of class homogeneity in personal networks. We use the position generator instrument to measure cross-class social ties across 13 occupations, calculating the proportion of ties b

The hypothesis that gender differences in children's adjustment is partially influenced by differences in temperament and interactions with same-sex peers was examined. Fifty-seven predominantly White, middle-class preschoolers (29 boys and 28 girls, M age = 54.5 months) participated. Measures were taken of children's arousability, problem behaviors, and tendencies to play with same-sex peers. A semester later, children's peer status was assessed. Analyses revealed that arousability and same-sex peer play interacted to predict problem behaviors. For boys high in arousability, play with same-se

Understanding social determinants of HIV late presentation with advanced disease (LPWA) beyond individual-level factors could help decrease LPWA and improve population-level HIV outcomes. This study aimed to examine county-level social determinants of health (SDOH) with HIV late presentation. We aggregated datasets for analysis by linking statewide HIV diagnosis data from the South Carolina (SC) Enhanced HIV/AIDS Reporting System and multiple social contextual datasets (e.g., the American Community Survey). All adult (18 years and older) people with HIV diagnosed from 2014 to 2019 in SC were i

Two possible indicators of a deficient segregation of functional networks are within-underconnectivity and between-overconnectivity. Both these processes can be observed in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) to be associated with different core and co-occurring atypicalties of behavior. We focused on within- and between-network connectivity of Frontoparietal and Sensorimotor networks in ASD compared to typically developed (TD) peers and its links to social difficulties and impairments of executive and motor functions. To our knowledge, this study for the first time described between-network connec

Environmental factors profoundly affect the brain's sensory processing network, optimizing adaptive strategies for growth and survival. We hypothesized that sensory-specific functional responses and/or functional networks could be altered by manipulating environmental conditions. To elucidate how the environment influences brain development, we exposed male mice to two - socially isolated and enriched environments - during early life (from 4 to 11 weeks) and investigated their effects on mouse brain functionality using sensory stimulus-evoked BOLD fMRI and resting-state fMRI. Here, we show tha

A growing body of evidence suggests that autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are related to altered communication between brain regions. Here, we present findings showing that ASD is characterized by a pattern of reduced functional integration as well as reduced segregation of large-scale brain networks. Twenty-three children with ASD and 25 typically developing matched controls underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging while passively viewing emotional face expressions. We examined whole-brain functional connectivity of two brain structures previously implicated in emotional face processin

Safety concerns continue to be challenging amid racially segregated communities of urban concentrated disadvantage. Although contributing factors to crime in such neighborhoods have been described, there is a lack of knowledge regarding how social isolation and perceptions of safety impact community health. This qualitative study explored how minoritized residents (N = 23) from an urban community of economic disadvantage perceived the influence of environmental and residential conditions on their health. Use of the grounded theory method produced conceptual insights into the process of how saf

Segregation is a multidimensional phenomenon deeply entwined with historical, social, and ecological contexts. The ecology of segregation framework explores how social norms institutionalize racism, classism, and power dynamics to drive inequitable patterns of environmental benefits and hazards. The ecology of segregation has thus far been applied in the Global North, yet is relevant but not as well studied in the Global South and specifically Latin America. More work is needed to consider how the framework can be applied in other historic, sociocultural, and governance contexts. This paper ap

Segregation-whether across schools, neighborhoods, or occupations-is regularly invoked as a cause of social and economic disparities. But segregation is a complicated causal treatment: what do we mean when we appeal to a world in which segregation does not exist? One could take societal contexts as the unit of analysis and compare across societies with differing levels of segregation. In practice, it is more common for studies of segregation to take persons or households as the unit of analysis within a single societal context, focusing on what would happen if particular individuals were count

We assess racial disparities in the service quality of app-based ride-hailing services, like Uber and Lyft, by simulating their operations in the city of Chicago using empirical data. To generate driver cancellation rate disparities consistent with controlled experiments (up to twice as large for Black riders as for White riders), we estimate that more than 3% of drivers discriminate by race. We find that the capabilities of ride-hailing technology to rapidly rematch after a cancellation and prioritize long-waiting customers heavily mitigates the effects of driver discrimination on rider wait

The global mental health burden is rising, with economic segregation as a key social determinant contributing to mental health and its inequalities. However, most studies rely on residential-based segregation measures failing to capture the actual segregation individuals experience through daily mobility and activities. Using a large-scale mobility dataset across the contiguous United States, we quantify mobility-based economic segregation and examine its associations with mental health outcomes across income groups and urbanicity levels. We find that individuals in the lowest and highest inco

The characteristics of where people live are increasingly recognized as influential in shaping health-related behaviors, including smoking. The adverse impact of poor neighborhood characteristics on health disproportionately plagues Black Americans, but also likely varies across subgroups within the Black community, leading to health disparities. This study examined the roles of residential segregation and housing cost burden in smoking behavior among a national probability sample of 2370 Black American adults. We further assessed whether individual demographics and social support moderated th

Occupational and residential segregation and other manifestations of social and economic inequity drive of racial and socioeconomic inequities in infection, severe disease, and death from a wide variety of infections including SARS-CoV-2, influenza, HIV, tuberculosis, and many others. Despite a deep and long-standing quantitative and qualitative literature on infectious disease inequity, mathematical models that give equally serious attention to the social and biological dynamics underlying infection inequity remain rare. In this paper, we develop a simple transmission model that accounts for

Using the American Housing Survey for 2001 and Census 2000, I examine the link between gated communities and residential segregation. I hypothesize that gating and segregation are defined by similar mechanisms, thus reinforcing urban inequality in U.S. cities. The results, however, indicate a more complex relationship. On the one hand, there are common mechanisms behind the two processes: the pursuit of higher property values, fear of crime, and fear of increased social heterogeneity. An increase in percent recent immigrants leads to higher levels of both segregation and gating. On the other h

PURPOSE: Residential segregation is linked to racial and socioeconomic inequity in outcomes for numerous infections including SARS-CoV-2, influenza, STIs, and tuberculosis. Despite the importance of segregation as a driver of infection inequity, there are few mathematical models to inform our understanding of these dynamics.
METHODS: We developed a transmission model including mechanistic relationships between residential segregation and infection inequity. We conceptualize segregation as a fundamental social cause of infection inequity that jointly impacts contact patterns and vulnerability

OBJECTIVE: Investigate the association between residential segregation and the incidence of chlamydia and gonorrhea from 2013 to 2021 at the county level in contiguous U.S. states.
METHODS: National-level secondary US data from 2013 to 2021 from the Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention Sexually Transmitted Infection surveillance dataset, American Community Survey, and Racial Segregation Index were analyzed using the Generalized Estimating Equation, and spatial regression. Analysis was divided into two periods (2013-2019; 2020-2021) to account for COVID-19 disruptions. Residential segre

Residential segregation is a fundamental structural determinant of health that generates social and spatial inequalities, yet its relationship with clinically diagnosed sleep disorders remains poorly understood. This study examined the association between neighborhood residential segregation and clinically diagnosed sleep disorders among 165,669 individuals residing in 265 census tracts in Cleveland, Ohio. Residential segregation was measured using the Index of Concentration at the Extremes (ICE), which captures racial segregation (ICE-Race), income segregation (ICE-Income), and racialized eco

Persistence of racial segregation makes equitable health care impossible for African Americans, as does the supra-geographic segregation perpetuated by enduring racial medical mythologies that remain unchallenged in health professions education. This article canvasses how these mythologies exacerbate myopia in health professions practice and education, maintain barriers, and perpetuate racial health inequity.
