The first well-documented methylmercury (MeHg) poisoning by consumption of fish arose in Minamata, Japan in 1953. MeHg had dispersed from Minamata to the Shiranui Sea. The temporal changes in MeHg in the umbilical cords indicate that residents living around that Sea had been exposed to low-dose MeHg through fish consumption for about 20 years (at least from 1950 to 1968). They have complained of paresthesia at the distal parts of the extremities and around the lip even 30 years after the cessation of exposure to anthropogenic MeHg. The thresholds of touch and two-point discrimination of those

INTRODUCTION: Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD) are rare antibody-mediated disorders of the central nervous system with a predilection for the spinal cord and optic nerves.
OBJECTIVE: Our objective is to evaluate the dorsolemniscal system using the somatosensory evoked potential, specifically the registration of the N20 and P40 waves.
METHODS: The Somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEP) were prospectively performed in 13 patients with NMOSD. All the patients were recruited from the outpatient clinic of a demyelinating diseases center from Southern Brazil.
RESULTS: We evaluated

BACKGROUND: Although the association between tinnitus and temporo-mandibular disorders (TMD) has been frequently reported, their rate of association in the literature shows a great variability.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the prevalence of TMD in patients with somatosensory tinnitus and, vice versa, the occurrence of somatosensory tinnitus in patients with TMD.
METHODS: The study included patients with somatosensory tinnitus (audiological group) and patients with TMD (stomatological group), evaluated at the audiologic and stomatologic clinics of the Policlinic Hospital of Milan, Italy

BACKGROUND: Somatosensory tinnitus (ST) is a type of tinnitus where changes in somatosensory input from the head-neck area influence factors of a patient's tinnitus. As there are often several influencing factors, identifying an evident somatosensory influence is challenging. As a result, not all patients who might benefit from ST treatment are referred and not all patients who are referred will actually benefit from ST treatment.
OBJECTIVE: This article presents an overview of current knowledge on diagnosis and treatment strategies in patients with craniomandibular-related ST.

BACKGROUND: The temporal processing of sensory information can be evaluated by testing the somatosensory temporal discrimination threshold (STDT), which is defined as the shortest interstimulus interval needed to recognize two sequential sensory stimuli as separate in time. The STDT requires the functional integrity of the basal ganglia and of the somatosensory cortex (S1). Although there is evidence that time processing is impaired in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD), no study has yet investigated STDT in patients with various degree of cognitive impairment.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of our s

BACKGROUND: The somatosensory phenotype of Chinese temporomandibular disorders (TMD) patients is not sufficiently studied with the use of contemporary techniques and guidelines.
METHODS: A standardized quantitative sensory testing (QST) battery consisting of 13 parameters with a stringent statistical protocol developed by the German Research Network on Neuropathic Pain was performed over the most painful and corresponding contralateral sites as well as the right hand of 40 Chinese patients with TMD and pain classified according to the Diagnostic Criteria for TMD (DC/TMD). The same QST protoco

Sensory differences are common in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). While there is no well-accepted method to measure sensory differences objectively, there is accumulating evidence from recent years concerning sensory perception, including data concerning temporal discrimination thresholds of individuals with ASD as measured by different measures. The somatosensory temporal discrimination (STD) test measures the threshold at which an individual can temporally discriminate multiple tactile stimuli delivered in succession. We aimed to investigate tactile perception in ASD and hypothesized that ch

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are multifactorial conditions influenced by physical, psychological, and behavioral factors. Emotional distress, altered pain perception, and maladaptive coping strategies contribute to TMD pathology. This study examined psychological and somatosensory correlates of TMDs, focusing on anxiety, somatosensory amplification, and coping styles.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 108 patients with TMDs (76 females, 32 males; mean age 33.98 ± 7.20 years) and 112 healthy controls (58 females, 54 males; mean age 34.25 ± 6.85 years). Anxiety was

Recovery functions of somatosensory evoked potentials were studied by the paired stimulation technique in 61 patients with various neurological disorders. A less suppressive or hyperexcitable phase at short intervals, which had been shown in myoclonic patients, was seen in 22 patients. This abnormality was observed even in patients without myoclonus or involuntary movements, which suggests that this phenomenon is not mainly due to some dysfunction causing myoclonus or movement disorders. Less suppression at short intervals was observed for both N20-P25 and P25-N33 components in most of them. L

Brainstem auditory (BAEP) and somatosensory (SEP) evoked potentials to median and peroneal nerve stimulation were investigated in 25 patients with neurodegenerative system disorders: 9 Friedreich's ataxia, 7 hereditary motor sensory neuropathies, 3 familial spastic paraplegia, 3 olivopontocerebellar atrophy, 1 ataxia telangiectasia and 1 abetalipoproteinemia. BAEPs were abnormal in 39%, SEPs to both upper- and lower-limb stimulation were abnormal in 63%. Serial evoked potential testing paralleled the clinical progression. SEPs were more frequently and severely altered than BAEPs suggesting tha

The somatosensory functions of small-diameter nerve fibres were tested on the lower and upper extremities in nine patients with anorexia nervosa, ten patients with bulimia nervosa and ten control subjects, by analysing warmth, cold, and pain thresholds. To test large-diameter nerve fibres, the vibration threshold was also measured. Both patient groups had markedly elevated pain thresholds compared with the control subjects. In contrast, warmth and cold thresholds were only suggestively elevated while vibration thresholds were not at all increased in the patients. A distal-proximal pattern of s

The pathophysiology and underlying pain mechanisms of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are poorly understood. The aims were to assess somatosensory function at the temporomandibular joints (TMJs) and to examine whether conditioned pain modulation (CPM) differs between TMD pain patients (n = 34) and healthy controls (n = 34). Quantitative sensory testing was used to assess the somatosensory function. Z-scores were calculated for patients based on reference data. Conditioned pain modulation was tested by comparing pressure pain thresholds (PPTs) before, during, and after the application of pain

Purpose Tinnitus and temporomandibular disorders have already been associated in the literature, but despite many studies, it is still an intriguing discussion point. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of hearing loss among somatosensory tinnitus patients with temporomandibular disorders and to assess the influence of tinnitus on patients' quality of life. Method An otolaryngologist examined 585 patients in order to detect and evaluate the presence of tinnitus. Subjects were evaluated using the Portuguese version of the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders. An

The most significant otologic symptoms, consisting of ear pain, tinnitus, dizziness, hearing loss and auricolar "fullness", generally arise within the auditory system, often are associated with extra auricolar disorders, particularly disorder of the temporo-mandibular joint. In our study we examined a sample of 200 consecutive patients who had experienced severe disabling symptom. The patiens came to maxillofacial specialist assessment for temporomandibular disorder. Each patient was assessed by a detailed anamnestic and clinical temporomandibular joint examination and they are divided into fi

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: We aimed in this case series to identify shortcomings in assessment of long-term painful and psychosocial consequences of EI and to demonstrate the value of biopsychosocial assessment and the commonalities in outcomes.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 15 cases from 2004 to 2019 of adult claimants assessed in a medico-legal practice for complex chronic pain disorders secondary to EI. Extensive biopsychosocial information, including 165 data items on pre- and post-injury observations, were collected on each. Cutaneous and deep pressure somatosensory examination was pe

UNLABELLED: OBJECTIVE/CONTEXT: Dermatomal somatosensory-evoked potentials (dSEPs) may be valuable for diagnostic purposes in selected cases with spinal disorders.
DESIGN: Reports on cases with successful use of dSEPs.
FINDINGS: Cases 1 and 2 had lesions causing multiple root involvement (upper to middle lumbar region in Case 1 and lower sacral region in Case 2). Cystic lesions in both cases seemed to compress more than one nerve root, and stimulation at the center of the involved dermatomes in dSEPs helped to reveal the functional abnormality. Cases 3 and 4 had lesions involving the spinal c

Previous studies have reported that patients with panic disorder (PD) exhibited an aberrant level of GABA concentration, an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the human brain. However, it remains substantially unclear whether the inhibitory function regarding the neurophysiological characteristics is altered in this disease. Sensory gating (SG) is considered as an automatic inhibitory function in the sensory cortex. In addition, brain's gamma oscillation within the sensory cortex is another index to reflect inhibitory function. Here we aimed to investigate whether the patients with PD showed alter
