BACKGROUND: Supracricoid partial laryngectomy (SCPL) results in laryngeal preservation in more than 95% of patients with T2 glottic carcinoma. After surgery, glottis function is characterized by an absence of vocal cords and poor glottis closure. Voice is an important postSCPL quality of life factor.
OBJECTIVE: Enhance postSCPL vocal function. Obtain postsurgical acoustic and aerodynamic measurements and correlate multiple objective parameters with perceptual results.
METHOD: Continuous speech voice samples from 61 patients who had undergone SCPL more than 1 year before were scored according

PURPOSE: The Multilevel word Accuracy Composite Scale (MACS) is a novel whole-word measure of speech production accuracy designed to evaluate behaviors commonly targeted in motor-based intervention for childhood apraxia of speech (CAS). The MACS yields a composite score generated through ratings of segmental accuracy, word structure maintenance, prosody, and movement transition. This study examined the validity of the MACS through comparison to established measures of speech accuracy. Reliability was also examined within and between practicing speech-language pathologists (SLPs).

BACKGROUND: Metronome-paced speech results in the elimination, or substantial reduction, of stuttering moments. The cause of fluency during this fluency-inducing condition is unknown. Several investigations have reported changes in speech pattern characteristics from a control condition to a metronome-paced speech condition, but failure to control speech rate between conditions limits our ability to determine if the changes were necessary for fluency.
AIMS: This study examined the effect of speech rate on several speech production variables during one-syllable-per-beat metronomic speech in or

Differentiation of logopenic (lvPPA) and nonfluent/agrammatic (nfvPPA) variants of Primary Progressive Aphasia is important yet remains challenging since it hinges on expert based evaluation of speech and language production. In this study acoustic measures of speech in conjunction with voxel-based morphometry were used to determine the success of the measures as an adjunct to diagnosis and to explore the neural basis of apraxia of speech in nfvPPA. Forty-one patients (21 lvPPA, 20 nfvPPA) were recruited from a consecutive sample with suspected frontotemporal dementia. Patients were diagnosed

PURPOSE: Using American Speech-Language-Hearing Association's (ASHA's) National Outcomes Measurement System (NOMS) Functional Communication Measure (FCM) as a common metric, this investigation compared traditional service delivery and telepractice service delivery for children receiving therapy for the NOMS diagnostic category of "speech sound production."
METHOD: De-identified cases were secured from ASHA's NOMS database and a proprietary database from a private e-learning provider. Cases were included if they met 3 criteria: (a) children received treatment exclusively for speech sound produ

The aim of the study is the analysis of the error-repairs of people with cluttering (PWC), whether they repair their speech errors similarly to control speakers or not. Error-repairs were analysed in spontaneous speech samples of 13 PWC and 13 age- and sex-matched control speakers. Error-to-cutoff time, duration of the editing phase, and error-to-repair time were measured. Strategies of repairs (point of interruption, proportion of delays, and types of editing terms and phases) were also examined. Results of the two groups were compared. Results show that there are no differences between the t

Background With respect to the clinical criteria for diagnosing childhood apraxia of speech (commonly defined as a disorder of speech motor planning and/or programming), research has made important progress in recent years. Three segmental and suprasegmental speech characteristics-error inconsistency, lengthened and disrupted coarticulation, and inappropriate prosody-have gained wide acceptance in the literature for purposes of participant selection. However, little research has sought to empirically test the diagnostic validity of these features. One major obstacle to such empirical study is

A major limitation in the speech sciences is access to naturalistic data in experimental settings and the difficulty of translating laboratory designs to real-world contexts. Researchers studying speech production or perception often rely on in-lab recordings, which constrain the sociolinguistic contexts examined and limit ecological validity. The Toolkit for Acoustic-Phonetic Analysis (TAPA) is an open-source pipeline that automates the acquisition, transcription, speaker diarization, forced alignment, and per-segment acoustic analysis of naturalistic, single/multi-speaker audio. The current

Voice evaluation is based on perceptive analysis of voice quality and on instrumental assessments, which comprise acoustic and aerodynamic sound measures. Even though perceptive evaluation is considered the gold standard for voice evaluation, it is biased by its subjective nature. Despite the fact that instrumental analysis is considered objective, it has limited reliability. This is why the integration of these two methods into a multiparametric analysis allows a more broad range diagnostic approach for dysphonia.

Grammatical features of fluent aphasic speakers have not received as much attention as those exhibited by non-fluent aphasic speakers. In part, this neglect reflects the difficulty of applying consistent analytical procedures to fluent aphasic speech. For the analytical process to be meaningful, the methodology must be robust, replicable and capable of dealing with the voluble and non-specific output which is often typical of these speakers, and yet be sensitive enough to reveal subtle grammatical differences between aphasic and normal speech. In this paper the methodological problems encounte

This study examines the lateral biases in tongue movements during speech production. It builds on previous research on asymmetry in various aspects of human biology and behavior, focusing on the tongue's asymmetric behavior during speech. The findings reveal that speakers have a pronounced preference toward one side of the tongue during lateral releases with a majority displaying the left-side bias. This lateral bias in tongue speech movements is referred to as tonguedness. This research contributes to our understanding of the articulatory mechanisms involved in tongue movements and underscore

PURPOSE: During motor speech examinations for suspected apraxia of speech (AOS), clients are routinely asked to repeat words several times sequentially. The purpose of this study was to understand the task in terms of the relationship among consecutive attempts. We asked to what extent phonemic accuracy changes across trials and whether the change is predicted by AOS diagnosis and sound production severity.
METHOD: One hundred thirty-three participants were assigned to four diagnostic groups based on quantitative metrics (aphasia plus AOS, aphasia-only, and aphasia with two borderline speech

PURPOSE: To develop an assessment protocol for speech motor planning with phonologically balanced stimuli for Brazilian Portuguese, including all necessary variables for this diagnosis.
METHODS: Three stages were carried out: In the first, word lists were built with the main criterion being syllabic and accentual patterns. From the survey conducted in Stage 1, the words that composed the first version of the protocol lists in Stage 2 were selected, and grouped into two fundamental tasks for diagnosing acquired apraxia of speech (AOS): repetition and Reading Aloud (RA). In Stage 3, the occurre

PURPOSE: Cluttering is a type of fluency disorder characterized by a speech rate which is perceived to be fast and/or irregular as well as by an abnormal speech rhythm. As far as we know, no research has been conducted as yet using objective measurements and acoustic phonetic description on the rhythm of cluttered speech. The aim of this study is to show by objective measurements whether there are any differences between the rhythm of cluttered and control speech, and which parameters point to such differences.
METHODS: For the analysis, recordings of spontaneous speech samples were taken fro

PURPOSE: This investigation was designed to examine the effects of an articulatory-kinematic treatment in conjunction with visual biofeedback (VBFB) via electropalatography (EPG) on the accuracy of articulation for acquired apraxia of speech (AOS).
METHOD: A multiple-baseline design across participants and behaviors was used with 4 individuals with chronic AOS and aphasia. Accuracy of target speech sounds in treated and untreated phrases in probe sessions served as the dependent variable. Participants received an articulatory-kinematic treatment in combination with VBFB, which was sequentiall

OBJECTIVE: Acoustic phonetic measures have been found to correlate with negative symptoms of schizophrenia, thus offering a path toward quantitative measurement of such symptoms. These acoustic properties include F1 and F2 measurements (affected by tongue height and tongue forward/back position, respectively), which determine a general "vowel space." Among patients and controls, we consider two phonetic measures of vowel space: average Euclidean distance from a participant's mean F1 and mean F2, and density of vowels around one standard deviation of mean F1 and of F2.
METHODS: Structured and
