Re-evaluation of boundaries of Streptococcus mitis and Streptococcus oralis and demonstration of multiple later synonyms of Streptococcus mitis, Streptococcus oralis and Streptococcus thalassemiae: description of Streptococcus mitis subsp. carlssonii subsp. nov. and emended description of Streptococcus mitis.

The commensal species Streptococcus mitis and Streptococcus oralis are genetically diverse to a degree that challenges traditional definitions of species. This causes automatic identification based on DNA sequences or cellular extract profiles problematic. Based on an initial analysis of 266 genomes, we subjected a subset of 100 representative genomes to detailed phylogenetic, pairwise distance and gene pattern analyses. S. mitis and S. oralis constitute a continuum of clones that are genetically unique. To recognize most isolates as separate species is biologically and practically meaningless

Streptococcus mitis infection in newborns.

Although neonatal infections caused by Streptococcus viridans have been suggested to be less severe than those caused by classic neonatal pathogens, little is known about neonatal infections caused by specific species within this group of bacteria. We report six infants who had S. mitis isolated from blood culture. All were infected at < or = 3 days of age; five of the mothers had perinatal risk factors for neonatal sepsis. Five infants were preterm and three had birth weights < or = 2500 gm. Hematologic abnormalities were common. Two died as a result of the infection. Antibiotic susceptibilit

Post-Streptococcus mitis infection polyserositis.

We report a case of a 42-year-old man who presented with acute epigastric and retrosternal chest pain and exertional dyspnoea, and was subsequently diagnosed with polyserositis secondary to post-Streptococcal mitis infection. A CT scan showed a large pericardial effusion requiring pericardiocentesis, small bilateral pleural effusions and small amount of ascites. Several serological tests were done, which were all found to be normal. Pericardial and pleural fluid aspirates revealed an exudate. Culture of the pleural fluid yielded growth of S.  mitis and this was deemed the cause of the polysero

Streptococcus mitis septicaemia and hepatitis.

The case of an otherwise well 9-y-old boy with fever, papular rash, jaundice and impaired liver function is presented. Streptococcus mitis sensitive to penicillin grew in blood culture. The boy had an excellent outcome. The clinical spectrum of viridans streptococci may be wider than currently anticipated, and Streptococcus mitis may cause septicaemia and hepatitis in immunocompetent individuals.

[A study on the pathogenesis of Streptococcus mitis exotoxin].

OBJECTIVE: To study the isolation, purification and pathogenesis of Streptococcus mitis pyrogenic exotoxin causing toxic shock syndrome. METHODS: Streptococcus mitis isolated from patients' throat were shaking cultivated. After being centrifuged, the supernatant fluid of the culture was precipitated with 20%, 40%, 60%, 80% (NH(4))(2)SO(4) respectively and the fast protein liquid chromatography(FPLC) was used for the final step of purification. Rabbits receiving subcutaneous injection with respective purified proteins were monitored daily for fever. The ability of the purified proteins to enha

The Clinical Significance of Streptococcus mitis Bacteremia.

BACKGROUND: Except for their role in bacterial endocarditis, nonpneumococcal Streptococcus mitis group (SMG) bacteria have traditionally been regarded as commensals of the oropharynx. Widespread adoption of matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry has increased identification of these organisms and has led to increased concern about their clinical significance. We evaluated SMG bacteremia in a large multicenter cohort to characterize associated clinical syndromes and better define their clinical relevance. METHODS: We performed a retrospective r

Streptococcus mitis Expressing Pneumococcal Serotype 1 Capsule.

Streptococcus pneumoniae's polysaccharide capsule is an important virulence factor; vaccine-induced immunity to specific capsular polysaccharide effectively prevents disease. Serotype 1 S. pneumoniae is rarely found in healthy persons, but is highly invasive and a common cause of meningitis outbreaks and invasive disease outside of the United States. Here we show that genes for polysaccharide capsule similar to those expressed by pneumococci were commonly detected by polymerase chain reaction among upper respiratory tract samples from older US adults not carrying pneumococci. Serotype 1-specif

The genome of Streptococcus mitis B6--what is a commensal?

Streptococcus mitis is the closest relative of the major human pathogen S. pneumoniae. The 2,15 Mb sequence of the Streptococcus mitis B6 chromosome, an unusually high-level beta-lactam resistant and multiple antibiotic resistant strain, has now been determined to encode 2100 genes. The accessory genome is estimated to represent over 40%, including 75 mostly novel transposases and IS, the prophage phiB6 and another seven phage related regions. Tetracycline resistance mediated by Tn5801, and an unusual and large gene cluster containing three aminoglycoside resistance determinants have not been

EXPERIMENTAL ARTHRITIS IN THE RABBIT, PRODUCED WITH STREPTOCOCCUS MITIS.

1. We have produced arthritis in 50 per cent. of the rabbits injected with Streptococcus mitis. 2. The character of the arthritis is identical with that produced by Micrococcus rheumaticus. 3. The exudate in and about the joints partakes of the same nature as that caused by Streptococcus rheumaticus. 4. Bacteriological studies show that Streptococcus mitis can be recovered from about one third of the affected joints. 5. Arthritis produced by other types of streptococci differs by reason of greater destruction of tissue, by being more permanent in character, and by the exudate containing large

Polymicrobial Streptococcus mitis and Vagococcus fluvialis infective endocarditis.

BACKGROUND: Infective endocarditis (IE) is a life-threatening condition most commonly caused by Staphylococcus aureus, but other pathogens, including Streptococcus species, are increasingly recognized. The International Society for Cardiovascular Infectious Diseases (ISCVID) recently updated the list of "typical" IE pathogens, yet Vagococcus species remain excluded. This report aims to highlight the clinical significance of Vagococcus fluvialis in IE, addressing whether its isolation from blood cultures should prompt suspicion for endocarditis. METHODS: We describe a case of polymicrobial IE

Streptococcus Mitis Endocarditis Associated with Early Gastric Carcinoma.

We report a case of Streptococcus mitis endocarditis associated with early gastric carcinoma. A 71-year-old man who had been diagnosed with aortic regurgitation (AR) two years previously was referred for valve surgery and evaluation of elevated inflammatory markers. Four months previously, atrophic gastritis, early gastric adenocarcinoma, and colon polyp had been identified in the patient during endoscopy. However, Helicobacter pylori testing was negative. On admission, he had no dental diseases or recent oral procedures. Echocardiography demonstrated severe AR and mobile vegetation on the aor

Successful management of late-onset Streptococcus mitis endophthalmitis.

Endophthalmitis following intraocular surgery can be devastating. This case report demonstrates successful management of late-onset Streptococcus mitis endophthalmitis treated by vitrectomy, panretinal photocoagulation (PRP) and silicone oil tamponade. A 75-year-old man presented with painful vision loss in his right eye. The patient had uneventful phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation in the right eye at an outside clinic 6 weeks prior. Examination disclosed hypopyon and vitritis, as well as discrete inflammatory collections in the vitreous. The patient underwent vitrectomy wi

Parallel evolution of Streptococcus pneumoniae and Streptococcus mitis to pathogenic and mutualistic lifestyles.

The bacterium Streptococcus pneumoniae is one of the leading causes of fatal infections affecting humans. Intriguingly, phylogenetic analysis shows that the species constitutes one evolutionary lineage in a cluster of the otherwise commensal Streptococcus mitis strains, with which humans live in harmony. In a comparative analysis of 35 genomes, including phylogenetic analyses of all predicted genes, we have shown that the pathogenic pneumococcus has evolved into a master of genomic flexibility while lineages that evolved into the nonpathogenic S. mitis secured harmonious coexistence with their

Disseminated viridians streptococcus (Streptococcus mitis) infection presenting with toxic shock-like syndrome.

The authors report a case of a 35-year-old man with no known underlying disease who presented with fever, cellulitis with hemorrhagic blebs on the left leg, monoarthricular left knee arthritis, multiple organ failure and septic shock. His clinical syndrome was compatible with toxic shock syndrome and his blood grew alpha hemolytic (viridians) Streptococcus mitis. To our knowledge, there are few reported cases of toxic shock syndrome cause by Streptococcus mitis in immune-competent adults.

Endogenous endophthalmitis caused by Streptococcus mitis: A case report.

RATIONALE: Endogenous endophthalmitis is a rare disease caused by hematogenous intraocular metastasis of bacteria from an infectious source. Diagnosing endogenous endophthalmitis is challenging for non-ophthalmologists. However, ophthalmic diseases can cause irreversible vision loss, making prompt diagnosis and treatment critical. Here we present a rare case of endogenous endophthalmitis initially misdiagnosed as a cataract. PATIENT CONCERNS: An 84-year-old Japanese man presented to the emergency department with fever and dysmotility. The patient was aware of a left subconjunctival hemorrhage

Characterization of a Signaling System in Streptococcus mitis That Mediates Interspecies Communication with Streptococcus pneumoniae.

Streptococcus mitis is found in the oral cavity and nasopharynx and forms a significant portion of the human microbiome. In this study, in silico analyses indicated the presence of an Rgg regulator and short hydrophobic peptide (Rgg/SHP) cell-to-cell communication system in S. mitis Although Rgg presented greater similarity to a repressor in Streptococcus pyogenes, autoinducing assays and genetic mutation analysis revealed that in S. mitis Rgg acts as an activator. Transcriptome analysis showed that in addition to shp, the system regulates two other downstream genes, comprising a segment of a
