Sugar-sweetened beverages and body weight.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Given the high prevalence of obesity in the USA, much recent attention has focused on dietary strategies for weight control. Several medical and scientific societies currently recommend reducing consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs). However, the evidence base for a public health recommendation has been a topic of debate. The purpose of this review is not to underscore the debate but rather to consider how recently published data pertaining to SSBs contribute to the evidence base for preventing and treating obesity, with application to caring for patients. RECENT

Sugar-sweetened beverages and chronic disease.

Sugar-sweetened beverages, a major source of fructose, raise serum uric acid levels and are associated with an increased risk of gout, hypertension, and diabetes. However, it is unclear whether the associations with hypertension and diabetes are caused by fructose per se, or through some other mechanism. Nevertheless, given their demonstrated adverse health associations and the lack of any health benefit, the evidence favors minimization of sugar-sweetened beverage intake.

Sugar-sweetened beverage, artificially sweetened beverage and sugar intake and colorectal cancer survival.

BACKGROUND: The influence of a high sugar diet on colorectal cancer (CRC) survival is unclear. METHODS: Among 1463 stage I-III CRC patients from the Nurses' Health Study and Health Professionals Follow-up Study, we estimated hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for CRC-specific and all-cause mortality in relation to intake of post-diagnosis sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB), artificially sweetened beverages (ASB), fruit juice, fructose and other sugars. RESULTS: Over a median 8.0 years, 781 cases died (173 CRC-specific deaths). Multivariable-adjusted HRs for post-diagnosis in

Sugar-sweetened beverages, urate, gout and genetic interaction.

The clinical manifestations of gout occur as a result of immune responses to monosodium urate crystals. Elevated serum levels of urate (hyperuricemia) are a prerequisite for the development of gout with reduced fractional renal excretion of uric acid (FEUA) an important cause. In New Zealand, Mãori and Pacific Island people have inherently raised urate levels with one consequence a higher prevalence of more severe gout. One characteristic metabolic effect of fructose, present in sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB), is raised urate from hepatic processing of fructose. Here we discuss, and place in

Sugar-Sweetened Beverages, Artificially Sweetened Beverages, and Breast Cancer Risk: Results From 2 Prospective US Cohorts.

BACKGROUND: Whether consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) or artificially sweetened beverages (ASBs) is associated with the risk of breast cancer is of public health interest. OBJECTIVES: We sought to evaluate associations between consumption of SSBs and ASBs and risks of total and subtype-specific breast cancer. METHODS: We followed 82,713 women from the Nurses' Health Study (1980 to 2016) and 93,085 women from the Nurses' Health Study II (1991 to 2017). Cumulatively averaged intakes of SSBs and ASBs from FFQs were tested for associations with incident breast cancer cases and subt

Consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages, non-sugar sweetened beverages, and their substitution and risk of type 2 diabetes: the HELIUS study.

PURPOSE: The association between non-sugar-sweetened beverages (NSSB), as a suitable alternative for sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB), and the risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D) remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the association between the intake of SSB and NSSB, their substitutions with each other, and T2D risk. METHODS: We used a sub-sample of adults aged 18-70 years from the Healthy Life in an Urban Setting (HELIUS) study. Dietary data was assessed using ethnic-specific food frequency questionnaires. Multivariable-adjusted incidence rate ratios (IRRs) and 95% confidence intervals

Potentially addictive properties of sugar-sweetened beverages among adolescents.

Sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) increase risk of cardiometabolic disease. Young people consume the largest amounts of SSBs and have experienced the greatest relative gains in obesity in the past several decades. There is evidence of addictive properties of both caffeine and sugar, the primary ingredients in SSBs, but little research into such properties of SSBs in naturally occurring consumption patterns. Thus, in this exploratory study, we sought to examine potentially addictive properties of SSBs during a 3-day SSB cessation intervention in overweight and obese adolescents who typically con

Artificially Sweetened and Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Intake and Risk of Liver Cancer.

IMPORTANCE: Artificially sweetened beverages (ASBs) and sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) are widely consumed worldwide and have been linked to metabolic disorders, including obesity and type 2 diabetes, which are established risk factors associated with liver cancer. However, prospective evidence examining beverage consumption and liver cancer subtypes remains limited and inconsistent. OBJECTIVE: To examine associations between ASB and SSB consumption and risk of incident liver cancer overall and by subtype, including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC).

Sugar-Sweetened Beverages and Childhood Obesity: A Life-Course Perspective.

Background/Objectives: Childhood obesity represents a major global health challenge. Sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) remain an important modifiable dietary exposure; however, adolescent beverage behavior is often examined independently of dietary patterns established earlier in life. This narrative review examines SSB consumption and adiposity across the life course, particularly during the first 1000 days as a sensitive period for developing dietary habits. Methods: Targeted literature searches were conducted in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science (January 2021-13 August 2026). We prioritized

Sugar-sweetened beverages in India: Price elasticity, affordability, and taxation.

Rising consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) in India is a significant public health challenge, contributing to obesity, type 2 diabetes and other noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). SSB-attributable deaths exceed 10,000 annually. The associated economic burden is projected to reach 2.47% of India's gross domestic product (GDP) by 2060. This study evaluates the impact of taxation as a policy instrument to reduce SSB consumption in India. Data from the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) 2022-23 household survey and Euromonitor retail sales data were used. SSB affordability was measured

Taxation and Sugar-Sweetened Beverages: Position of Dietitians of Canada.

Dietitians of Canada recommends that an excise tax of at least 10-20% be applied to sugar-sweetened beverages sold in Canada given the negative impact of these products on the health of the population and the viability of taxation as a means to reduce consumption. For the greatest impact, taxation measures should be combined with other policy interventions such as increasing access to healthy foods while decreasing access to unhealthy foods in schools, daycares, and recreation facilities; restrictions on the marketing of foods and beverages to children; and effective, long-term educational ini

Sugar-Sweetened Beverages and Artificially Sweetened Beverages Consumption and the Risk of Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver (NAFLD) and Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH).

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) are fast becoming the most common chronic liver disease and are often preventable with healthy dietary habits and weight management. Sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) consumption is associated with obesity and NAFLD. However, the impact of different types of SSBs, including artificially sweetened beverages (ASBs), is not clear after controlling for total sugar intake and total caloric intake. The aim of this study was to examine the association between the consumption of different SSBs and the risk of NAFLD and NASH

Sugar-sweetened orange beverages: A silent risk factor for colorectal cancer?

BackgroundEriodictyol is a flavonoid primarily found in citrus fruits for dietary consumption. Laboratory studies have shown that it has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which help prevent colorectal cancer (CRC). However, consuming eriodictyol through citrus drinks and added sugars may increase the risk of CRC. These beverages can raise blood sugar levels and disrupt the gut microbiome, potentially increasing the risk of CRC.AimThis study aims to evaluate the relationship between dietary intake of eriodictyol flavonoid, commonly consumed through citrus drinks or sugar-sweetened o

Switching from Sugar- to Artificially-Sweetened Beverages: A 12-Week Trial.

BACKGROUND: Consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) forms the primary source of added sugar intake and can increase the risk of metabolic disease. Evidence from studies in humans and rodents also indicates that consumption of SSBs can impair performance on cognitive tests, but that removing SSB access can ameliorate these effects. METHODS: The present study used an unblinded 3-group parallel design to assess the effects of a 12-week intervention in which young healthy adults (mean age = 22.85, SD = 3.89; mean BMI: 23.2, SD = 3.6) who regularly consumed SSBs were instructed to replace

Costs of obesity attributable to the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages in Brazil.

Excess sugar is considered one of the primary factors contributing to overweight status. In Brazil, sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) contain a significant amount of this nutrient and are consumed excessively. These beverages are associated with adverse health outcomes and impose costs on the healthcare system. The literature currently lacks studies that aim to attribute specific nutrients or foods as causes of diseases and also evaluate their economic impact, especially in middle- and low-income countries. This study aims to estimate the direct and indirect costs of obesity, stratified by sex
