Intermuscular and intramuscular adipose tissues: Bad vs. good adipose tissues.

Human studies of the influence of aging and other factors on intermuscular fat (INTMF) were reviewed. Intermuscular fat increased with weight loss, weight gain, or with no weight change with age in humans. An increase in INTMF represents a similar threat to type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance as does visceral adipose tissue (VAT). Studies of INTMF in animals covered topics such as quantitative deposition and genetic relationships with other fat depots. The relationship between leanness and higher proportions of INTMF fat in pigs was not observed in human studies and was not corroborated by

Immunostaining of Skeletal Tissues.

Immunohistochemistry (IHC) is a routinely used technique in clinical diagnosis of pathological conditions and in basic and translational research. It combines anatomical, immunological, and biochemical methods and relies on the specific binding of an antibody to an antigen. Using the technique with mineralized tissues is more challenging than with soft tissues. Demineralizing the samples allows embedding in paraffin wax, and also facilitates cryosectioning. This chapter describes methods for IHC on formaldehyde-fixed, demineralized, paraffin-embedded, or frozen sections to detect antigens in s

Fracture in living tissues.

During development and in adult physiology, living tissues are continuously subjected to mechanical stresses originating either from cellular processes intrinsic to the tissue or from external forces. As a consequence, rupture is a constant risk and can arise as a result of excessive stresses or because of tissue weakening through genetic abnormalities or pathologies. Tissue fracture is a multiscale process involving the unzipping of intercellular adhesions at the molecular scale in response to stresses arising at the tissue or cellular scale that are transmitted to adhesion complexes via the

[Isoflavones and calcified tissues].

The data about osteotropic action of isoflavones are presented in this review. Isoflavones are the compounds of phytoestrogenes group--hormone-like bioregulators of plant origin. Animal experiments as well as bone tissue and bone cells cultures investigations demonstrate anabolic effect of isoflavones on bone metabolism. Isoflavones prevent bone loss in ovariectomized animals. They inhibit bone resorbition and enhance bone formation. Because of this natural and synthetic isoflavones hold great promise in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. These compounds may also be effective in pre

Engineering tissues and organs.

Genitourinary tissues can be engineered in-vitro and in-vivo for reconstruction using selective cell transplantation in combination with acellular matrices. This technology involves an interdisciplinary approach combining techniques of cell biology and materials sciences towards the development of functional tissues or organs. Tissues and organs in urology, such as the bladder, clitoris, corpus cavermosum, kidney, testis, ureter and urethra have been created in the laboratory, with varying degrees of functionality. Cells have also been recently used in patients as bulking agents for the treatm

Mechanoreceptors in articular tissues.

The morphology, distribution, and function of mechanoreceptors in joint capsules, ligaments, knee-joint menisci, and articular disks of the temporomandibular joints of animals, including humans, have been reviewed. In addition to free nerve endings, three types of joint receptors are present in most animal joints: 1) a Ruffini-like receptor situated in the capsule, 2) a Golgi tendon organ situated in a ligament; and 3) the encapsulated Pacinian-like corpuscle. In the anterior cruciate ligament, nerve fibers enter from the subsynovial connective tissue and terminate in receptors. Most of the re

Proteoglycans from pterygium tissues.

The proteoglycans of pterygium tissues were isolated and characterized by using biochemical methods. The existence of 2 kinds of proteoglycans was shown by agarose-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis; their molecular weights were estimated based on the mobility on agarose-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and on Kav values on gel chromatography. One proteoglycan was protein-rich with a molecular weight of 1.15 X 10(6), while the other was free from protein or contained a little protein, and had a molecular weight of 4.9 X 10(5).

Toward adaptive cyborg tissues.

Organoids and engineered tissues have emerged as powerful models of human biology, yet their development and function are often characterized through endpoint measurements that provide only static snapshots of dynamic biological processes. Recent advances in stretchable mesh electronics, developmental biointegration, and organoid engineering have enabled the creation of cyborg tissues with embedded sensing, stimulation, and computational capabilities. This review highlights recent progress in developmental bioelectronic integration, multifunctional tissue mapping, biological state reconstructi

Immunostaining of Skeletal Tissues.

Immunostaining is the process of identifying proteins in tissue sections by incubating the sample with antibodies specific to the protein of interest, then visualizing the bound antibody using a chromogen (immunohistochemistry or IHC) or fluorescence (immunofluorescence or IF). Unlike in situ hybridization, which identifies gene transcripts in cells, immunostaining identifies the products themselves and provides information about their localization within cells (nuclear, cytoplasmic, or membrane) or extracellular matrix. This can be particularly important in the context of bone and cartilage b

Development of mesenteric tissues.

Mesothelial, neurovascular, lymphatic, adipose and mesenchymal tissues make up the mesentery. These tissues are pathobiologically important for numerous reasons. Collectively, they form a continuous, discrete and substantive organ. Additionally, they maintain abdominal digestive organs in position and in continuity with other systems. Furthermore, as they occupy a central position, they mediate transmission of signals between the abdominal digestive system and the remainder of the body. Despite this physiologic centrality, mesenteric tissue development has received little investigatory focus.

Pregnancy and periodontal tissues.

Periodontitis is today considered to be a serious disease of periodontal tissues, one caused in most cases by bacterial infection which stimulates proteolysis and osteolysis of the tissues. Typical for the disease is formation of periodontal pockets and a chronic destructive inflammation which impacts on the whole organism. Periodontopathic bacteria colonized in a subgingival biofilm cannot be removed by common oral hygiene. Overproduction of bacteria and other pro-inflammatory mediators can increase the total pro-inflammatory state of the organism in pregnant women. Increased levels of some p

Nicotine and periodontal tissues.

Tobacco use has been recognized to be a significant risk factor for the development and progression of periodontal disease. Its use is associated with increased pocket depths, loss of periodontal attachment, alveolar bone and a higher rate of tooth loss. Nicotine, a major component and most pharmacologically active agent in tobacco is likely to be a significant contributing factor for the exacerbation of periodontal diseases. Available literature suggests that nicotine affects gingival blood flow, cytokine production, neutrophil and other immune cell function; connective tissue turnover, which

Fluoride and mineralized tissues.

This review focuses on the interaction of fluoride with the material properties of bone and teeth, which is of clinical, scientific, and public health interest. These tissues are composed primarily of collagen (protein) and hydroxyapatite (mineral), and their mechanical function depends on the properties of the constituents, their proportions, the interface, and the three-dimensional structure. Changing any of these may have clinical consequences. Fluoride interacts with mineralized tissues in a number of ways. At low doses, the fluoride may be passively incorporated into the mineral, stabiliz

[Cavitations in biological tissues].

AIM: An important reason for the high popularity of diagnostic ultrasound is its lack of hazardous side effects. However, as described below, the probability of inducing undesirable thermal and mechanical effects in tissue increases with a rise in the output of diagnostic ultrasound machines. METHODS AND RESULTS: The use of increasing negative peak pressures of the applied ultrasound pulse enhances the risk of inducing cavitation inside the body. The potential damage of cavitation results from the dynamic, e. g. wild pulsation, and a collapse of bubbles in the respective sound field. The coll

Tetracyclines and calcified tissues.

Tetracyclines are widely used in medical and dental practice. Since these drugs chelate calcium salts they are incorporated into bones and teeth during calcification. A review of the literature on the pharmacology of these drugs, their incorporation into calcified tissues and the management of tetracycline-stained teeth is given.

Oxygen delivery to tissues.

For health, well perfused tissues, oxygen uptake is determined primarily by metabolic need rather than by oxygen supply. Tissue hypoxia supervenes when tissue oxygen tension (PO2) falls below a critical point, and the point where this occurs can be predicted from the systemic oxygen delivery or extraction ratio. A growing body of evidence suggest that tissue oxygen extraction may be impaired in adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and sepsis. In these syndromes the minimum oxygen delivery needed to maintain a normal oxygen uptake appears to be increased, as tissues become hypoxic despite
