Niche evolution and asymmetric diversification in elm species (Ulmaceae).

Global patterns of species diversity are highly heterogeneous, and even within the same evolutionary lineage, species richness can differ markedly. Understanding the mechanisms underlying such disparities remains a central question in evolutionary biology and biogeography. Here, we investigate the evolutionary drivers of asymmetric diversity and distribution patterns in Ulmaceae by integrating molecular phylogenetics, fossil evidence, climatic niche analyses, and biogeographic reconstructions. We reconstructed a time-calibrated, species-level phylogeny encompassing 86.21% of extant Ulmaceae sp

Life Cycle and Mass Occurrence of Paracolopha morrisoni (Hemiptera: Aphididae) in South Korea.

Paracolopha morrisoni (Baker, 1919) (Aphididae: Eriosomatinae) is a gall-forming aphid that alternates between Zelkova serrata (Thunb.) Makino (Ulmaceae) and bamboo hosts in East Asia. Here, we provide field-based documentation of its seasonal biology and host alternation in South Korea, supported by DNA barcoding. Subterranean colonies on the roots of Pseudosasa japonica (Siebold & Zucc. ex Steud.) Makino ex Nakai (Poaceae), together with observations of migratory alates and larviposition, confirmed this bamboo as a secondary host. Phyllostachys heterocycla (Carrière) Matsum. (Poaceae) was id

Mucilage cells in the flower of Rosales species: reflections on morphological diversity, classification, and functions.

The presence of mucilage cells in plants, studied mainly in vegetative organs, is a condition shared by several taxonomic groups and aspects related to their diversity have been discussed with systematic purposes. This study explores the flower distribution and classification of mucilage cells in Rosales species, with inferences about flower functions. Floral buds from fifty-seven species representing seven of nine families recognized in the Rosales were sampled and processed for light and transmission electron microscopy. Mucilage cells were found in about 40% of the studied species of Cannab

Antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory effects of extract of Celtis iguanaea (Jacq.) Sargent leaves in mice.

The antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory activities of crude ethanolic extract of Celtis iguanaea leaves and their active fractions are reported. The oral treatment with crude ethanolic extract (CEE; 100, 300 or 1000 mg/Kg) inhibited the number of writhings in a dose-dependent manner. The intermediate dose also inhibited formalin-induced nociception in both phases. The oral treatment with dichloromethane fraction (DF; 9 mg/Kg) produced antinociceptive effect in both phases of formalin test; however, the treatment with ethyl acetate fraction (EAF; 16 mg/Kg) reduced pain only in the second phas

Antileishmanial activity of a tetralone isolated from Ampelocera edentula, a Bolivian plant used as a treatment for cutaneous leishmaniasis.

The stem bark of Ampelocera edentula Kuhlm. (Ulmaceae) is used by the Chimanes Indians from Bolivia for the treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis caused by the protozoan Leishmania braziliensis. A chloroform extract of the stem barks was found to be active against extracellular forms of Leishmania ssp. and Trypanosoma cruzi at 50 micrograms/ml. Bioassay-guided fractionation of this extract allowed us to isolate one active compound. Its structure was elucidated by spectral and chemical studies as 4-hydroxy-1-tetralone. BALB/c mice infected with L. amazonensis (PH8) or L. venezuelensis were treat
