Upper extremities deep venous thrombosis (UEDVT) is a rare condition. According to the literature, approximately 4-10% of all cases of venous thrombosis may involve the subclavian, axillary or brachial veins. In the last few decades, the incidence of UEDVT has increased because of more frequent use of central venous catheters (CVCs) and cardiac pacemaker implantation. In addition, another common risk factor for UEDVT is cancer. UEDVT is classified as primary, approximately one-third of cases, which refers either to effort thrombosis or idiopathic UEDVT, or secondary, due to the presence of ove

Upper extremity deep vein thrombosis (UEDVT) is a rare thrombotic disorder (1-4% or all DVT), but it has a potential for considerable morbidity in the form of pulmonary embolism, persistent upper extremity pain and swelling, superior vena cava syndrome and loss of vascular access. Newer non-invasive methods such as duplex ultrasound and magnetic resonance angiography facilitate early diagnosis. Early catheter directed thrombolysis followed by anticoagulation prevent long-term sequalae.

Upper extremity deep-vein thrombosis has recently been recognized as being a more common and less benign disease than previously reported. It arises generally in the presence of recognizable risk factors, such as central venous catheters and cancer. However, as many as 20% of patients present with apparently spontaneous episodes. The prevalence of inherited coagulation defects in patients with this disease ranges from 10% to 26%. The clinical picture of upper extremity DVT is characterized by pain, edema, and functional impairment, although it may be completely asymptomatic. Because the preval

Approximately 10% of all deep vein thromboses occur in the upper extremity, and that number is increasing due to the use of peripherally inserted central catheters. Sequelae of upper extremity deep vein thrombosis (UEDVT) are similar to those for lower extremity deep vein thrombosis (LEDVT) and include postthrombotic syndrome and pulmonary embolism. In addition to systemic anticoagulation, there are multiple interventional treatment options for UEDVT with the potential to reduce the incidence of these sequelae. To date, there have been no randomized trials to define the optimal management stra

This review aims to describe the epidemiology, pathophysiology, risk factors, presentation, complications, evaluation/diagnosis, and treatment of upper extremity deep vein thrombosis (UEDVT). Upper extremity deep vein thrombosis (UEDVT) accounts for 6% of cases of deep vein thrombosis (DVT). It can lead to swelling and discomfort in that extremity and can be complicated by pulmonary embolism, post-thrombotic syndrome, and recurrence of DVT. Evaluation can begin with a dichotomized Constans score and fibrin degradation product testing. Diagnosis is typically made with compression ultrasound. An

A 38-year-old African American male presented with progressive pain, swelling, numbness, and warmth of the left upper extremity ten days before admission. A chest computerized tomography scan showed a large 8.3 cm × 6.1 cm x 9.9 cm anterior mediastinal mass with compression of the left brachiocephalic vein and superior vena cava. A venous doppler showed multiple occlusive venous thrombi in bilateral upper extremities, including the bilateral internal jugular and subclavian veins, as well as the left subclavian, axillary, cephalic, brachial and median cubital veins. BACKGROUND: This study aims to evaluate the efficacy and safety of ultrasound-accelerated catheter-directed thrombolysis (UACDT) in the treatment of upper extremity deep vein thrombosis (UEDVT).
METHODS: We conducted a prospective, observational cohort study of consecutive patients with acute UEDVT with low-dose UACDT using the Ekosonic® Endovascular System (EKOS Corporation, Bothell, WA, USA) at a single center from September 2012 until October 2014. Overall, sixteen patients (11 males and 6 females, age range 18 to 70 years, mean age, 45.6 years) were included in the study protocol. The pri

The case is presented of a 41 year-old women with a personal history of smoking and treated with oral contraceptives, who began taking analgesics and muscle relaxants due to a right cervical pain. As her clinical condition did not improve she was seen again. During the physical examination an increase of soft tissue in the right supraclavicular area was observed. The ultrasound revealed thrombosis of the internal jugular, subclavian, brachycephalic, axillar and humeral veins. We believe that upper-extremity deep venous thrombosis is a rare condition that must be considered in patients with oed

Upper extremity deep venous thrombosis (UEDVT) is uncommon as a spontaneous event in the general population and is associated with well-defined risk factors. Thromboembotic events are serious, but fortunately rare, complications following ovarian stimulation for IVF. A review of the Literature indicates that thromboembolic events after ovarian stimulation are usually associated with ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS). The incidence of UEDVT is higher in women undergoing assisted reproductive technology (ART) compared to the general population. The incidence of this condition is estimated

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic upper extremity deep vein thrombosis (UEDVT) management is controversial and ranges from anticoagulation alone to the addition of further interventions such as thrombolysis and decompressive surgery.
OBJECTIVES: The objective of this systematic review was to assess the effects of anticoagulation alone compared to anticoagulation with additional interventions such as thrombolysis or decompressive surgery on the incidence of recurrent UEDVT and post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS) in patients with idiopathic UEDVT (including those associated with the oral contraceptive pill).

We describe the case of a 23-year-old serviceman on overseas deployment who presented with a painful, swollen arm. Investigations showed an upper extremity deep vein thrombosis (UEDVT) of the right arm with an associated asymptomatic pulmonary embolism, which was treated with warfarin anticoagulation. Further investigation identified positional obstruction at the thoracic outlet, and the patient was diagnosed with Paget-Schroetter syndrome. He underwent elective resection of the first rib, and has now returned to normal duties. After review of the literature on UEDVT, it is suggested that in t

Central venous catheters (CVCs) are important tools in the care of patients with acute or chronic diseases, but catheter-related thrombosis and thrombotic occlusions are frequent complications, especially if CVCs are implanted for long-term use. In this review we focus on the management of these complications. Risk factors for catheter-related thrombosis include dislocation of the catheter tip, the presence of malignant disease and hypercoagulability. Catheter-related thrombosis is associated with catheter infection, pulmonary embolism and post-thrombotic syndrome. Catheter-related thromboses

Almost 4% of all patients with venous thrombosis have upper extremity deep vein thrombosis (UEDVT) and the incidence of UEDVT increases over time. The frequency of post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS) after UEDVT is not low and upper extremity PTS is a potentially major morbidity that adversely affects quality of life, particularly if the dominant arm is involved. We discuss briefly the role of thrombolytic therapy in the treatment of upper extremity deep vein thrombosis and also the role of systemic thrombolysis in selected patients.

Upper extremity deep vein thrombosis (UEDVT) is defined as thrombosis of the deep venous system (subclavian, axillary, brachial, ulnar, and radial veins), which drains the upper extremities. It can be caused by thoracic outlet anatomic obstruction, such as Paget-Schroetter syndrome, (primary) or by central intravenous catheters (secondary). UEDVT may be asymptomatic or present with acute severe pain and arm swelling. Clinical suspicion should be confirmed by diagnostic imaging procedures such as duplex ultrasound, computed tomography scan, or magnetic resonance imaging. UEDVT is managed by ant

We report the case of a 40-year-old right-handed man who developed a right subclavian vein thrombosis due to work as a TV cameraman. He presented with a sudden onset of marked swelling and blue discolouration of his right arm 3 weeks after the most strenuous and prolonged episode of TV camera work that he had ever undertaken. This involved carrying a 9kg camera on his shoulder, with his right arm flexed and abducted, for a 60min period with provocation of severe pain and marked discomfort persisting during the subsequent 3 weeks before presentation. A clinical diagnosis of upper extremity deep

A 27-year-old man sustained soft tissue injury to the left shoulder following a fall. Three days later, a diagnosis of left proximal subclavian vein thrombosis was made. The patient was given intravenous urokinase for 24 hours, followed by intravenous unfractionated heparin and oral warfarin. Oral anticoagulant treatment was continued for 12 months. His symptoms completely disappeared after three months of treatment. It is important to be aware of this unusual but potentially serious complication, as early diagnosis and treatment may limit morbidity and mortality.

A 47-year-old diabetic man with unstable angina underwent coronary bypass surgery using bilateral radial arteries and left internal thoracic artery. After surgery, the patient suffered from severe right arm pain and swelling without any bleeding. The postoperative immediate digital subtraction angiogram detected thrombotic occlusion of the right axillary vein. We report here a rare case of deep vein thombosis related to radial artery harvesting.

Arthroscopic shoulder surgery is generally associated with a low complication rate. While complications such as neurological injury, stiffness and iatrogenic damage are relatively well recognised, the occurrence of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), particularly of the upper extremity deep vein thrombosis (UEDVT), is exceedingly rare. We report two unusual postoperative cases of UEDVT following arthroscopic rotator cuff repair in two elderly sisters. No additional predisposing factors were identified beyond the perioperative setting; thrombophilia screening was negative. These cases underscore the im

The levels of antibodies to cardiolipin and β2-glycoprotein I and polymorphic variants G1691A of Factor V (factor V Leiden, FVL) and G20210A of prothrombin gene (G20210A) were studied in 16 patients with upper-extremity deep vein thrombosis (UEDVT). Most of patients with this syndrome have elevated values of these antibodies. Two of these patients are heterozygous carriers for G20210A and 1 - for FVL. Three patients with UEDVT and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) are positive for ANA and two others (one of them with Raynaud syndrome) have border line titre 1: 80 for ANA. All 3 patients with

Despite its relatively estimated high occurrence, the characterization of pediatric upper extremity deep vein thrombosis (UE-DVT) and of UE postthrombotic syndrome (PTS) is still lacking. We investigated the occurrence, characteristics, and predictors of UE-PTS in a cohort of children with objectively confirmed UE-DVT. Patients were analyzed in 3 groups according to DVT pathogenesis and neonatal status: primary (G1), secondary neonates (G2neonates), and non-neonates (G2non-neonates). A total of 158 children (23 G1, 25 G2neonates, and 110 G2non-neonates) were included. The most common triggerin
