A 47-year-old man with sudden onset of blindness, pleocytosis, and temporary hearing loss. Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada syndrome (Uveomeningoencephalitic syndrome).

The clinicopathologic findings of this patient were typical for Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada syndrome. Clinically, the patient had sudden onset of blindness, pleocytosis, and temporary hearing loss, with no history of eye trauma or surgery. Histopathologically, the choroid and iris showed chronic inflammation, loss of choroidal melanocytes, and dense chorioretinal adhesions. Presence of HLA-DRB1*0405 was consistent with the chronic phase of this syndrome.

[Uveomeningoencephalitis: report of 2 cases].

The uveomeningoencephalitic syndromes are inflammatory diseases, more prevalent in oriental patients, without sexual predilection and with mean age of 30 years. From the clinical point of view they affect the uvea, retina, meninges, the central nervous system and skin and in most cases the onset is followed by three phases: the meningoencephalitic phase, the acute ophthalmic phase and the dermatologic phase. These includes the Harada disease, the Vogt-Koyanagi disease, the Behçet disease and the idiopathic forms. The Vogt-Koyanagi syndrome is a chronic and severa bilateral exudative uveitis as

Headache and bilateral visual loss in a young hypothyroid Indian man.

We describe the exceptional association of Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada syndrome (VKHS) and hypothyroidism in a 29-year-old man of Indian heritage. VKHS is a rare uveomeningoencephalitic syndrome with probably autoimmune pathogenesis. Nontraumatic uveitis, aseptic meningoencephalitis, vitiligo, alopecia and poliosis are the leading clinical features of VKHS. The reported patient presented with bilateral visual loss and progressive frontal headache. VKHS was diagnosed due to characteristic ophthalmological findings and the diagnosis of aseptic meningitis. Due to the autoimmune pathogenesis, VKHS may be

Calculation of Similarity Between 26 Autoimmune Diseases Based on Three Measurements Including Network, Function, and Semantics.

Autoimmune diseases (ADs) are a broad range of diseases in which the immune response to self-antigens causes damage or disorder of tissues, and the genetic susceptibility is regarded as the key etiology of ADs. Accumulating evidence has suggested that there are certain commonalities among different ADs. However, the theoretical research about similarity between ADs is still limited. In this work, we first computed the genetic similarity between 26 ADs based on three measurements: network similarity (NetSim), functional similarity (FunSim), and semantic similarity (SemSim), and systematically i

Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease frequency around the globe: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada (VKH) disease has been historically associated with specific ethnic groups, suggesting an underlying susceptibility. Prior to this study, no meta-analysis had synthesized the global epidemiology of VKH, and therefore, information on its geographic distribution remained incomplete. The present study aims to determine the global distribution of VKH disease diagnosis in individuals presenting with uveitis. METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis of quantitative studies published between 2001 and 2025 in PubMed, SciELO, and LILACS was conducted f

Vitiligo as a First Sign of Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada Disease.

Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada (VKH) disease is a multisystem disorder characterized by bilateral granulomatous panuveitis resulting in serous retinal detachments, disk edema, and a sunset glow fundus development. Furthermore, it is associated with various extraocular findings, such as tinnitus, hearing loss, vertigo, poliosis, and vitiligo (1). VKH is considered to be an autoimmune disease mediated by T-cells targeting melanocyte antigen tyrosinase peptide (2). Moreover, VKH more often occurs in individuals with a genetic predisposition to the disease, including those of Asian and Hispanic heritage (3)

Successful Treatment of Vitiligo Associated with Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada Disease.

Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease (VKH) is a rare multisystem disorder with cutaneous, ophthalmic, neurologic, and auditory manifestations. There is a paucity of published literature regarding the management of cutaneous features in VKH. We report a case of VKH-associated vitiligo responsive to topical corticosteroids and topical calcineurin inhibitors.

[Progresses and existed problems on the diagnosis and treatment of Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease].

Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease is a multi-systems inflammatory disease that affects the eye, skin, inner ear and meninges. The characteristics of this disease are with meningismus, auditory dysfunction and integumentary changes. Bilateral granulomatous panuveitis with serous retinal detachments are the typical ocular findings. Vogt-koyanagi-Harada disease is characterized by the acute onset, poor response to the treatment and high blindness rate. The diagnosis is mainly made on the history and ocular findings with various systemic manifestations. Fundus angiography is often used to assist in the

[Non-infectious systemic diseases and uveitis].

Uveitis can be defined as any inflammation affecting the uveal tract, although in clinical practice this term includes any intraocular inflammatory event. The etiology of this inflammation can be related to an endogenous mechanism in the clinical course of a systemic disease (sarcoidosis, Behçet's disease, multiple sclerosis, Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease, etc.), or an isolated ocular entity. Sometimes, ocular inflammation is the initial manifestation of an undiagnosed systemic disease. On the other hand, ocular involvement could be the main cause of morbidity of the disease, and early diagnosi

Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada Disease in which Poliosis and Alopecia Occurred after a Long Period of Time.

Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada (VKH) disease is a multisystem autoimmune disorder affecting melanocyte-containing tissues such as the eyes, ears, central nervous system, and skin. A 55-year-old Japanese male presented with an 8-week history of increasing diffuse hair loss. A physical examination revealed diffuse alopecia of the scalp. He lost all body hair, including the eyebrows and eyelashes. All the remaining scalp hair was white, but no vitiligo was present. Laboratory examination found nearly normal values and the HLA profile was DR4. The patient was initially diagnosed with alopecia universalis an

Ocular manifestations of vitiligo: a systematic review.

Vitiligo is a disorder characterized by loss of epidermal melanocytes, resulting in depigmented macules and patches. While the relationship between ocular pathology and vitiligo has been demonstrated in conditions such as Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada and Alezzandrini syndromes, the ocular associations of non-syndromic vitiligo are incompletely understood. We conducted a systematic review to comprehensively describe the structural and functional changes seen in the eyes of patients with vitiligo, to identify patients at heightened risk for ocular disease, and to provide an approach to management of ocu
