The traditional vaccines against hepatitis have been instrumental in reducing the incidence of some types of viral hepatitis; however, the need for cost-effective, easily distributable, and needle-free vaccine alternatives has led to the exploration of plant-based vaccines. Plant-based techniques offer a promising avenue for producing viral hepatitis vaccines due to their low-cost cultivation, scalability, and the potential for oral administration. This review highlights the successful expression of hepatitis B surface antigens in plants and the subsequent formation of virus-like particles, wh

Viral hepatitis A-E belong to the most important infectious diseases worldwide. Viral hepatitis is highly endemic in most developing countries in Africa, South East Asia, and southern America; however also in industrialized countries as Germany hepatitis A, B and C represent a thread which should not be underestimated. In Germany, there are about 20,000 to 40,000 hepatitis A infections every year, most of them acquired abroad; about 50,000 new hepatitis B infections and about 5,000 to 8,000 infections with hepatitis C virus occur every year. About 500,000 individuals are chronic carriers of he

In countries where hepatitis A is highly endemic, exposure to hepatitis A virus (HAV) is almost universal before the age of 10 years, and large-scale immunization efforts are not required. In contrast, in areas of intermediate endemicity or in transition from high to intermediate endemicity, where transmission occurs primarily from person to person in the general community (often with periodic outbreaks), control of hepatitis A may be achieved through widespread vaccination programmes. Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is one of the world's most widespread infectious agents and the cause of millions of

The global elimination of viral hepatitis by 2030 remains an ambitious goal that hinges not only on diagnostics and therapeutics but fundamentally on the strategic use and continued innovation of vaccines. The ESCMID Study Group for Viral Hepatitis (ESGVH) convened to examine the role of vaccination as the cornerstone of hepatitis prevention, from long-established immunisation programs to emerging opportunities and unmet needs. This review explores the evolving landscape of hepatitis vaccines against four major hepatotropic viruses. Hepatitis A offers a paradigm of vaccine effectiveness yet sh

BACKGROUND: In Taiwan, the national hepatitis B virus vaccination program and national viral hepatitis therapy program were implemented to control the infections of hepatitis viruses and their progressive illnesses. Studies have evaluated the impacts of two national health programs on many liver-related diseases, but not on acute and chronic viral hepatitis. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact on the mortality of acute and chronic viral hepatitis.
METHODS: Poisson regression models were used to estimate the adjusted rate ratios of the different period groups and corresponding

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a major global disease burden, often leading to chronic liver diseases, cirrhosis, cancer, and death in those infected. Despite the recent approval of antiviral therapeutics, a preventative vaccine is recognized as the most effective means to control HCV globally, particularly in at-risk and developing country populations. Here we describe the efforts and challenges related to the development of an HCV vaccine, which after decades of research have not been successful. Viral sequence variability poses a major challenge, yet recent research has provided unprecedented v

Digestive and liver disease : official journal of the Italian Society of Gastroenterology and the Italian Association for the Study of the Liver2011eng
Viral hepatitis B is a leading cause of acute and chronic liver disease worldwide, including cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Vaccination is the most effective measure for controlling and preventing hepatitis B and its severe long-term sequelae. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), by the end of 2008 177 countries had introduced hepatitis B vaccination into their national routine neonatal, infant and/or adolescent immunisation programmes, and Italy was one of the first countries to implement a universal strategy of hepatitis B vaccination. The implementation of such vaccina

AIM: To assess efficacy of vaccine against viral hepatitis B (VHB) in adults after achievement of acute leukemia (AL) remission.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Specific prevention of VHB was made in 30 AL patients with recombinant vaccine Engerix B by two schemes: 0-1-2-12 and 0-1-2-6 months with double adult dose 40 mcg. Efficacy of vaccination was evaluated by the titer of antibodies to HBs-Ag (HBs-Ab) 1 month after each injection of the vaccine. The control group consisted of 36 patients. Follow-up was 6 months to 10 years.
RESULTS: Vaccine prophylaxis of VHB in AL remission resulted in appearance

BACKGROUND: Viral genetic variability presents a major challenge to the development of a prophylactic hepatitis C virus (HCV) vaccine. A promising HCV vaccine using chimpanzee adenoviral vectors (ChAd) encoding a genotype (gt) 1b non-structural protein (ChAd-Gt1b-NS) generated high magnitude T cell responses. However, these T cells showed reduced cross-recognition of dominant epitope variants and the vaccine has recently been shown to be ineffective at preventing chronic HCV. To address the challenge of viral diversity, we developed ChAd vaccines encoding HCV genomic sequences that are conserv

OBJECTIVES: Hepatitis B vaccination has been proven to be effective and well-tolerated. Certain neurological, ocular or systemic complications have, however, been reported to be induced by the vaccine. Clinicians should be aware of exceptional ocular complications.
CLINICAL REPORT: Four patients under 50 years of age developed occlusion of the central vein of the retina after vaccination with recombinant hepatitis B vaccine. None of the classical causes of occlusion of the central vein of the retina could be evidenced.
DISCUSSION: Several pathophysiological hypotheses have been proposed to e

Hartford Dispensary, a private, not-for-profit behavioral health care organization specializing in opioid treatment program services, serves more than 4,200 clients per day in seven licensed facilities. In May 2002, the Dispensary began offering free combined hepatitis A and B vaccine for all eligible clients in two Hartford clinics. Initial eligibility criteria required a client to be hepatitis C antibody positive, hepatitis B virus (HBV) surface antigen (HBsAg) negative, not pregnant, and not have a contraindication due to a medical condition. From May 2002 through April 2005, 5,419 doses of

To assess the impact of hepatitis B virus on health workers, the authors studied baseline prevalences of hepatitis B serologic markers and undertook prospective surveillance to assess hepatitis B attack rates in 837 health workers and 994 blood-donor controls between 1977 and 1982, before the introduction of hepatitis B vaccine. The baseline prevalence of all hepatitis B markers was 14% in health workers and 6% in controls (p < 0.001); exposure to hepatitis B virus was related to the intensity of blood exposure and its duration. In contrast, the frequency of exposure to hepatitis A virus, a no

BACKGROUND: People living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) have a higher risk of morbidity and mortality from acquiring infectious diseases, including those preventable by vaccination, such as hepatitis A and B. This study aimed to analyze the immunity of men living with HIV to hepatitis A and B, with emphasis on those in the MSM category, to identify the factors associated with this immunity.
METHODS: This is a retrospective, analytical, observational study of cases of men living with HIV, as reported in the Notifiable Diseases Information System of the municipality of Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo, Brazil

Hepatitis A virus (HAV) is one of the well-known viruses that cause hepatitis all around the globe. Although this illness has decreased in developed countries due to extensive immunization, numerous developing and under-developed countries are struggling with this virus. HAV infection can be spread by oral-fecal contact, and there are frequent epidemics through nutrition. Improvements in socioeconomic and sanitary circumstances have caused a shift in the disease's prevalence worldwide. Younger children are usually asymptomatic, but as they become older, the infection symptoms begin to appear.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) vaccination has effectively reduced the acute and chronic infection rates in recent years. Since 1983, HBV vaccination has been recommended for all neonates in Korea.
METHODS: This article reviews the impacts of HBV vaccination throughout the past 25 years in Korea. Before the introduction of the HBV vaccination program, approximately 8% of the general Korean population tested positive for hepatitis B virus surface antigen (HBsAg).
RESULTS: The percentage of vaccinated infants has surpassed 98.9% since 1990. The HBsAg carrier rate in the general population

Porcine viral diarrhea imposes substantial economic burdens on the swine industry. The commercial triplex-attenuated vaccine against TGEV, PEDV, and PoRV infections has limitations in preparation and efficacy. The Hepatitis B virus core antigen (HBcAg), known for its ability to self-assemble into virus-like particles (VLPs) in vitro and stably present exogenous antigens, serves as a critical technical foundation for the development of innovative nano-vaccines. In this study, we strategically concatenated truncated and full-length monomers of HBcAg, with the conserved linear neutralizing epitop
