OBJECTIVES: Investigation of differences between medical students (MS), psychology students (PS), teaching students (TS) and a mix of other students (OS) in terms of burnout severity and personality structure.
METHODS: In a cross-sectional study (N = 1649) burnout, personality structure (personality functioning, emotion regulation, attachment), resources (social support, scope for decisionmaking in studies) and demands (Corona pandemic) were assessed, two multivariate analyses of covariance were conducted.
RESULTS: PS experience less burnout-exhaustion than OS (p < .01), MS and PS reported less burnout-cynicism than OS (p < .001), MS, PS and TS stated less burnout-inefficacy compared to OS (p < .001). Regarding personality structure, overall higher values were reported by MS, PS and TS compared to OS. Significant covariates were found for burnout and personality structure.
CONCLUSIONS: MS, PS and TS are neither more prone to burnout nor have a more vulnerable personality than OS. OS at risk should be further explored in future research.
