Targeted therapies have revolutionized the treatment of atopic dermatitis (AD) by offering patients highly effective disease control with complete or near-complete resolution. The American Academy of Dermatology updated their 2014 AD treatment guidelines in 2023. Since 2014, the treatment of AD has evolved immensely with the advent of biologics and small molecule inhibitors. While the foundation of AD treatment has stayed relatively consistent (ie, gentle skin care, emollients, and topicals), new therapies have supplanted previous systemic agents given their superior efficacy and safety profiles. This article discusses the shifting landscape of AD treatment and provides insight into current clinical trials.
