The association between stigma consciousness and weight stigma, psychological well-being, positive body image, and eating behaviors.

Stigma consciousness refers to an individual difference in the extent to which members of stereotyped groups believe that their stereotyped status permeates interactions with out-group members. This investigation examined whether stigma consciousness contributed unique variance in predicting mental well-being, and eating and positive body image outcomes (i.e., depression, self-esteem, body appreciation, intuitive eating, emotional eating) after controlling for experienced weight stigma (EWS), including fat microaggressions (FM), and internalized weight bias (IWB). Study participants (N = 288)

Analysis of Pulsatile Vessel Expansion in Healthy, COPD- and PH-Patients Using Dynamic Vessel Segmentation in Free-Breathing Lung MRI.

BACKGROUND: The pulsatile expansion of pulmonary vessels carries dynamic cardiopulmonary information that may reveal disease earlier than structural changes alone. PURPOSE: To test (i) intra- and inter-scan repeatability of dynamic vessel metrics in healthy subjects, and (ii) whether chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and postcapillary pulmonary hypertension (PH) exhibit disease-specific differences. STUDY TYPE: Retrospective, multi-cohort feasibility study with repeatability sub-study. SUBJECTS: Healthy: 29 (11 female), COPD: 52 (15 female), PH: 25 (15 female) with isolated postc

Cognitive and Affective Predictors of Restricted and Repetitive Behaviors and Interests in Very Young Autistic Children.

The development of distinct restricted and repetitive behaviors and interests (RRBIs) is well-studied in autism, but their relationship to cognitive and affective development in young autistic children is unknown. This cross-sectional study examined how higher-order RRBIs (e.g., circumscribed interests and insistence on sameness) and sensorimotor RRBIs (e.g., stereotyped movements and sensory preoccupations) relate to concurrent developmental level, executive function, temperament, and internalizing and externalizing behaviors in autistic toddlers and preschoolers. 143 2- and 4-year-old autist

Intensive Conventional Rehabilitation for Reducing Upper Limb Co-contraction and Functional Improvement in Parkinson's Disease: A Case Report.

Upper limb dysfunction significantly impairs activities of daily living in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). This dysfunction is partially attributable to abnormal muscle contraction. Although robot-assisted therapy improves upper limb function in patients with PD, these devices are expensive and not easily accessible in standard rehabilitation facilities. Non-robotic interventions, such as repetitive large-amplitude movements, improve upper-limb performance; however, whether these conventional exercises could improve co-contraction remains unclear. Herein, we present the case of a 70-ye

Sensory encoding and memory retrieval are coordinated with propagating waves in the human brain.

Complex behavior entails a balance between taking in sensory information from the environment and utilizing previously learned internal information. Studies on mice show that the brain continually alternates between outward and inward cognitive modes every few seconds, accompanied by stereotyped cascades of neuronal spiking. Our analysis of large fMRI datasets revealed a similar mechanism in humans. Human brain activity was punctuated every several seconds by coherent, propagating waves emerging in the exteroceptive sensorimotor regions and terminating in the interoceptive default mode network

Functionality of symptoms and interpersonal communication in home video recordings of functional/dissociative versus epileptic seizures.

OBJECTIVE: Conceptualizing functional/dissociative seizures (FDS) as resulting from dissociation, or conversion, we hypothesized that, compared to epileptic seizures (ES), FDS should carry more symbolic or communicative content and that this would allow observers to distinguish FDS from ES. METHODS: Three independent, epileptologically naive raters evaluated home videos of patients with confirmed diagnoses of either FDS or ES using a standardized form. The focus of the ratings was explicitly not on seizure semiology, but on verbal and nonverbal behavior, the role of proxies, interaction patte

Toward a Fuller Integration of Respiratory Rhythms Into Research on Infant Vocal and Motor Development.

Rhythm organizes many human motor activities from before birth and continues to shape development throughout infancy. In this review, we examine the role of rhythmic processes in early vocal development, drawing on research from motor control, physiology, speech, and language acquisition. We propose that respiration functions as a crucial core of early rhythmic coordination, linking vocalizations and bodily movements into an integrated system. At present, we have an imprecise understanding of how infant breathing for speech develops during the first year of life. However, respiration, an inher

Is It Psychogenic Non-Epileptic Event, Sleep Related Rhythmical Movement Disorder or Hypermotor Seizure?

Distinguishing non-epileptic events from epileptic seizures remains a clinical challenge, particularly when occurring exclusively during sleep. Sleep-related rhythmical movement disorder (SRRMD) is a benign condition typically seen in early childhood, characterised by stereotyped, rhythmical repetitive movements involving large muscle groups, predominantly during Stage II of non-REM sleep. These movements can closely mimic features of sleep parasomnias, hypermotor seizures or psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES), complicating the diagnostic approach. We present a case of an adolescent fem

Multimodal Evaluation of Mental Workload and Engagement in Upper-Limb Robot-Assisted Motor Tasks.

Patient engagement and mental workload (MWL) are often overlooked when optimising robotic-assisted rehabilitation, despite their potential impact on its effectiveness. This study aims to propose a multimodal approach to assess MWL and engagement, using electrophysiological signals and questionnaires, to explore their modulation across different assistance modalities and engaging strategies. Thirty healthy subjects were enrolled and performed repetitive upper-limb movements with a robotic device under three assistance modalities (active, passive, semi-assisted) while listening to a 1 Hz auditor

Effects of a combined physical activity and educational drama intervention on core symptoms and physical fitness in children with ASD.

This pilot study evaluated the effects of a 12-week combined physical activity and educational drama intervention on core symptoms and physical fitness in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Twenty children were randomly assigned to an experimental group (n = 10), receiving the combined intervention, or a control group (n = 10), receiving conventional physical activity. Outcomes were assessed using the Repetitive Behavior Scale-Revised (RBS-R), Social Responsiveness Scale-2 (SRS-2), and a physical fitness test battery. The results indicated that both interventions significantly improved re

Functional mapping of the somatotopic organization of the supplementary motor area using navigated repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation and computer vision-based analysis.

BACKGROUND: The supplementary motor area (SMA) is a cortical region involved in motor and language functions. Motor representations within the SMA follow a somatotopic organization: Anterior regions are linked to orofacial movements, middle regions to upper limb movements, and posterior regions to lower limb movements. SMA lesions may produce impairments that correspond to this somatotopy; therefore, preoperative assessment may aid diagnosis. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to revise and extend a protocol for assessing the SMA using navigated repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (nrTMS),

Exploring the use of robotics in occupational therapy within hospital settings: A scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Robot-assisted therapy (RT) is an emerging intervention, offering potential to enhance the effectiveness of conventional occupational therapy through task-specific, repetitive, and intensive training. Although RT has shown promise in improving functional outcomes, its integration into practice within hospital settings remains underexplored. This scoping review aimed to identify the types of RT used in occupational therapy care within hospital settings, understand how it is applied across different populations and treatment parameters, and review the range of outcomes reported. A Survey of Trainers on the Health and Welfare of Standardbred Racehorses in Prince Edward Island.

The Standardbred racing industry plays an important role in the North American economy and is expected to continue operating and growing. However, public perception is often unfavorable, with increasing concern about the health and welfare of Standardbred racehorses. Despite this, limited research has examined Standardbred well-being. To address this gap, a survey of equine trainers on Prince Edward Island (PEI) was conducted to evaluate key health and welfare issues during racing careers. Results showed that over one quarter of respondents had at least one horse displaying stereotypic behavio

Sequencing of distinct wing behaviors during Drosophila courtship.

Some behaviors, like biting followed by chewing and then swallowing, unfold in stereotyped sequences, while others, such as limb movements during defensive maneuvers, can be flexibly combined as needed. During courtship, male Drosophilid flies produce a series of actions, including orientation, tapping, singing, licking, and copulation, that follow an ordered but temporally variable sequence.1,2 At shorter timescales, however, individual actions remain highly dynamic. For example, courtship songs are composed of variable sequences of distinct syllables, with their patterning and amplitude acti
