The outcomes of non-surgical and surgical penile augmentation procedures: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Despite the growing popularity of penile augmentation procedures, evidence on benefits and risks across techniques remains limited. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate changes in penile dimensions and adverse events following penile augmentation procedures. Five databases (PubMed, PsycINFO, CINAHL, Web of Science, and Embase) were searched from inception to 16 September 2025, following PRISMA and MOOSE reporting standards. Random-effects meta-analyses were performed using restricted maximum likelihood estimation. Pooled mean differences are reported with 95% confidence i

Trends in perioperative mortality in the United States: A 25 year retrospective analysis.

BACKGROUND: Perioperative mortality, defined as death within 30 days of surgery, is a significant global health concern. Despite improvements in surgical practices and anesthesia care, it continues to account for millions of deaths annually. This study examines trends in perioperative mortality in the United States from 1999 to 2023, highlighting demographic and regional differences. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of perioperative-associated death in the United States during 1999-2023 based on CDC WONDER data from death certificates was performed. Perioperative mortality was defined in the

Safety and diagnostic yield of transbronchial lung cryobiopsy in patients with interstitial lung disease and severe pulmonary function impairment.

BACKGROUND: Transbronchial lung cryobiopsy (TBLC) has become an established diagnostic modality in interstitial lung disease (ILD). However, current guidelines frequently exclude patients with severely impaired lung function due to safety concerns. This study aimed to evaluate the safety and diagnostic yield of TBLC in patients with advanced pulmonary function impairment. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of consecutive patients with suspected ILD who underwent TBLC for diagnostic evaluation at Thoraxklinik Heidelberg, University Hospital Heidelberg, between November 2017 and Dec

A Critical Methodological Review of Clinical Scores, Machine Learning, and Large Language Models for the Diagnosis and Management of Pediatric Appendicitis.

Background/Objectives: Acute appendicitis is the most common surgical emergency of childhood, yet its diagnosis remains difficult because presentations are atypical, inflammatory markers are nonspecific, and the consequences of error run in both directions, from negative appendectomy to missed perforation. Over the past two decades, a large body of work has tried to support this decision with clinical scores, and more recently with machine learning, deep learning, and large language models. Methods: This critical methodological review synthesises that literature across the whole care pathway r

The PancreaSure Multianalyte Blood Test Performs Well at Distinguishing Early-Stage Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma from High-Risk Controls: A Retrospective Secondary Analysis.

Background/Objectives: Biomarkers that can facilitate early detection of pancreatic cancer and extend patient survival are a significant unmet need. PancreaSure is a serum biomarker signature that performed well at distinguishing Stage I and II pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) from both high-risk and non-high-risk controls in two previous validations. The goal of this study was to perform a secondary analysis of test performance exclusively in individuals at high risk of PDAC due to a pathogenic variant in a susceptibility gene or strong family history of the disease. To this end, we ex

Body Weight, Body Composition, Nutrition, and Sex in Gastric Cancer: Epidemiological Associations and Surgical Outcomes-A Narrative Review.

Gastric cancer remains a major cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide, while the roles of excess body weight, body composition, nutrition, and biological sex remain incompletely defined. This narrative review separately evaluates (i) epidemiological associations with gastric cancer risk, with explicit attention to cardia versus non-cardia tumors and Helicobacter pylori as a major confounder, and (ii) perioperative and long-term outcomes after gastrectomy, including postoperative complications, treatment completion, recurrence, and survival. BMI, visceral adiposity, skeletal-muscle mass, a

Maternally Perceived Fetal Movement and Computerized Cardiotocography Parameters: What's the Link? A Multicenter Pilot Study on Fetal Health.

Background: Maternal perception of fetal movement (FM) is an indirect indicator of fetal well-being. The aim was to investigate the relationship between computerized cardiotocography (cCTG) parameters and maternal perception of FM. Methods: We conducted a prospective, multicentric observational study at two tertiary referral hospitals. After cCTG, all women completed a questionnaire assessing maternal perception of FM and fetal hiccups. The primary outcome was the relation between multiple cCTG parameters and maternal perceptions of FM. Results: We included 419 patients. Women who reported inc

Chronic infectious keratitis: A review of etiopathogenesis, clinical presentation and management challenges.

Chronic infectious keratitis represents a distinct clinical entity characterized by indolent progression, diagnostic difficulty, and prolonged therapeutic courses. Unlike acute bacterial keratitis, chronic infections often present with subtle inflammatory signs, recurrent episodes, or poor response to empirical antimicrobial therapy. Among the most important causes are herpetic keratitis, acanthamoeba keratitis, Microsporidial stromal keratitis, and atypical (non-tuberculous) mycobacterial keratitis. Herpes simplex virus keratitis may manifest as recurrent epithelial disease or immune-mediated

Malignant transformation in diabetic foot ulcers: A cross-sectional analysis of the impact of pathology results on patient management after diabetic foot surgery.

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are a major cause of lower-extremity amputation, hospitalization, and mortality. Although management focuses on wound care, infection control, and limb preservation, malignancies may develop in chronic, nonhealing wounds, and tumors may mimic DFUs. Evidence on malignancy in DFUs is limited, and the diagnostic contribution of routine histopathological examination in surgically treated cases remains unclear. This study aimed to determine the frequency of histopathologically confirmed malignancy in patients undergoing surgery for chronic DFUs and assess its impact on m

Liquid Embolic Volume Does Not Predict Outcome After Middle Meningeal Artery Embolization for Chronic Subdural Hematoma.

PURPOSE: Middle meningeal artery embolization (MMAE) is increasingly used for chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH), but the relationship between injected liquid-embolic volume and outcomes is unclear. We evaluated dose-outcome associations and searched for a minimum effective dose. METHODS: This retrospective multicenter cohort included 313 patients treated with liquid embolic agents at 12 MESH Registry centers from 2016 to 2024. MMAE was performed alone in 172 patients (55.0%) and adjunctively with surgical evacuation in 141 (45.0%). Dose was assessed as total injected volume per patient and nor
