Squamous cell carcinoma arising from ovarian mature cystic teratoma with concurrent cervical high-risk HPV infection and low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion: a case report.

OBJECTIVE: Malignant transformation of ovarian mature cystic teratoma (MCT) is uncommon, with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) being the predominant type. Its pathogenesis remains poorly understood, and the potential role of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is controversial. CASE REPORT: A 58-year-old postmenopausal woman presented with a huge complex cystic-solid pelvic mass. The elevated Serum SCC antigen revealed potential malignant transformation. Intraoperative frozen section revealed squamous cell carcinoma arising from mature cystic teratoma, and comprehensive staging surgery was perf

Approach to Secretory Carcinoma of the Minor Salivary Glands of the Buccal Mucosa: A Case Report With a Review of the Literature.

Secretory carcinoma (SC) is a rare, low-grade malignant neoplasm of the salivary glands, most commonly arising in the parotid gland. Involvement of the minor salivary glands of the buccal mucosa is exceedingly rare, with only a handful of cases reported in the literature. A 30-year-old female presented with a one-year history of a swelling over the left cheek. On clinical examination, a 2 × 2 cm, lobulated, cystic swelling was identified in the left buccal mucosa. Fine-needle aspiration of the swelling showed predominantly eosinophilic material with occasional scattered cells. The lesion was s

Morel-Lavallée lesion: A case report and literature review.

RATIONALE: Morel-Lavallée lesions (MLLs) represent closed degloving injuries resulting from traumatic separation of skin/subcutaneous tissue from deep fascia. While typically associated with high-energy trauma, diagnosis becomes challenging in cases with occult trauma, complex comorbidities, or tumor-mimicking imaging features. This case report aims to highlight the diagnostic challenges and management strategy of MLL in a patient with a history of malignancy and anticoagulant therapy, underscoring the importance of pathological confirmation in atypical presentations. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 56-y

Isolated cardiac metastasis after comprehensive treatment with hepatocellular carcinoma: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac metastasis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is extremely rare, especially when it presents as isolated metastasis of HCC in the right ventricle without involving the right atrium or inferior vena cava. The cardiac metastasis of HCC may develop insidiously and lack specific clinical manifestations, which hinders early detection of cardiac metastasis. The prognosis for patients with cardiac metastasis of HCC is not satisfactory. METHODS: We present a 61-year-old male patient diagnosed with BCLC-B stage HCC, who underwent liver tumor resection surgery and, following tumor re

The Rare Case of a Sertoli Cell Tumor of the Adrenal Gland in a Man With Pathological Dexamethasone Suppression Test: A Case Report.

Sertoli cell tumors are rare gonadal stromal tumors. Extragenital manifestations, particularly in the adrenal gland, are exceptionally uncommon. We present a case of an adrenal Sertoli cell tumor in a male patient, presenting with a pathological (1 mg overnight) dexamethasone suppression test. An 82-year-old otherwise healthy man was referred for evaluation of an incidentally detected left adrenal mass. The patient was asymptomatic with no clinical signs of catecholamine excess, hypercortisolism, hyperaldosteronism, or B-symptoms. Initial CT scan revealed a 44 × 42 mm lesion, which increased t

[Differentiated thyroid carcinoma in children and adolescents].

BACKGROUND: Thyroid nodules in children are relatively rare; the risk of malignancy is considerably higher compared to adults. The optimal extent of surgery, the indications for radioactive iodine therapy (RAI), and the role of molecular genetic testing in children with thyroid carcinoma remain a matter of debate. AIM: To investigate the clinical course of differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) in children, as well as the outcomes of surgical and combined treatment based on ten years clinical experience at the Endocrinology Research Centre. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective single-ce

Recurrent pancreatic acinar cell carcinoma following a 7-year disease-free interval: A case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Pancreatic acinar cell carcinoma (PACC) is a rare malignant pancreatic tumor, accounting for only 1% of all pancreatic neoplasms. It has distinctive clinical, radiological, and histological features. CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we report a case of PACC diagnosed 7 years after surgical treatment for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). The recurrence was suspected during routine follow-up via abdominal computed tomography scan, which showed a local mass without biliary ducts dilation, vascular involvement, or any specific radiological signs. However, clinical exam

[A case of recurrent liver metastasis from a rectal neuroendocrine tumor 9 years after endoscopic resection].

The patient was an 82-year-old woman who underwent endoscopic submucosal dissection for a 10mm neuroendocrine tumor (NET) in her rectum at 72 years of age. For the first 7 years, she remained free of recurrence;however, at a follow-up examination 9 years after the procedure, multiple liver tumors were detected. No recurrence was noted in the rectum. A liver biopsy revealed a dense proliferation of small cells, consistent with the findings of the original NET, leading to a diagnosis of recurrence. Currently, she is receiving treatment with lutetium-labeled octreotide. Although the guidelines re

Watch and Wait in practice: Adherence to surveillance after nonoperative management for rectal cancer.

BACKGROUND: Surveillance after neoadjuvant therapy and complete clinical response, known as "Watch and Wait," is an accepted treatment approach for locally advanced rectal cancer. Watch and Wait replaces surgical resection with rigorous surveillance for early identification of regrowth. However, there are scant data on adherence to surveillance. This study aimed to assess the adherence to Watch and Wait and the receipt of optimal surveillance. METHODS: A multicenter cohort of patients diagnosed with rectal adenocarcinoma from 2021to 2022 was retrospectively reviewed. Patients who underwent Wa

Clinical Impact of Subcutaneous Fat Area on Incisional Hernia Development Following Laparoscopic Colorectal Cancer Surgery.

INTRODUCTION: Incisional hernia is a common complication experienced by patients who have undergone colorectal surgery. Visceral and subcutaneous fats have been implicated as risk factors; however, only a few studies have evaluated the role of abdominal wall musculature. Therefore, we examined the anatomical features of the intra-abdominal cavity and abdominal wall to identify risk factors for incisional hernia following laparoscopic colorectal resection. METHODS: This retrospective study involved 164 patients who underwent laparoscopic colorectal resection for cancer between January 2019 and

[Misdiagnosis of a giant hepatic perivascular epithelioid cell tumor: A case report].

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa) is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm, and giant (maximum diameter is ≥10 cm) hepatic PEComa is even more uncommon. We report a case of giant hepatic PEComa that was preoperatively misdiagnosed as fibrolamellar hepatocellular carcinoma. The patient was a middle-aged woman who presented with upper abdominal discomfort and was admitted to Xiangya Hospital of Central South University on August 21, 2025, for evaluation of a hepatic space-occupying lesion. She had no history of chronic liver disease, and relevant laboratory tests showed no significant abnormali

Case Report: Delayed diagnosis of pancreatic solid pseudopapillary neoplasm in a boy initially misdiagnosed as traumatic retroperitoneal hematoma.

Solid pseudopapillary neoplasm (SPN) of the pancreas is a rare pancreatic tumor with low-grade malignant potential. It predominantly occurs in adolescent girls and young women but can also affect boys. SPN may contain hemorrhagic or cystic components that can be mistaken for a post-traumatic hematoma when patients present after abdominal injury. We report a 12-year-old boy whose pancreatic tail lesion was initially interpreted as a traumatic retroperitoneal hematoma after minor blunt trauma at age 7. Ultrasound-guided drainage yielded hemorrhagic fluid with non-elevated amylase levels and nega

Breakthrough invasive pulmonary Coprinopsis cinerea (Hormographiella aspergillata) infection successfully managed with antifungal therapy and surgical resection enabling cord blood transplantation.

Coprinopsis cinerea (C. cinerea, also known as Hormographiella aspergillata) is a rare basidiomycete that causes invasive fungal infections in immunocompromised patients and is often difficult to diagnose microbiologically. We report a case of breakthrough proven invasive pulmonary fungal infection caused by C. cinerea during antifungal prophylaxis in a patient with acute myeloid leukemia undergoing induction chemotherapy. During the neutropenic phase, chest computed tomography (CT) revealed a nodular lesion in the right lower lobe that progressed despite antifungal prophylaxis, raising suspic
