Prevalence and risk factors of hearing impairment in older Singaporeans: a population-based study.

INTRODUCTION: We investigated the prevalence and risk factors of hearing impairment (HI) and significant hearing impairment (SHI) in a multi-ethnic older Asian population. METHODS: We included 2,494 adults aged ≥60 years from a population-based study. Hearing was evaluated using a SHOEBOX portable audiometer, with any HI defined as a pure-tone average hearing threshold >25 dB and SHI defined as >40 dB, based on the better-hearing ear. Sociodemographic, lifestyle and clinical characteristics were collected via a standardised clinical examination and validated questionnaires. Weighted prevalenc

Recognising Mild Cognitive Impairment and Early Alzheimer's Disease in General and Psychiatric Practice: Clinical Clues and Appropriate Referral.

Early cognitive decline may become evident through changes in daily activities or behaviour before it is apparent in a brief consultation. This selective narrative review supports case-finding and appropriate referral in general and psychiatric practice. Four actions organise the review: identify decline in previously mastered instrumental activities of daily living; recognise new apathy or sustained behavioural change; use a cognitive screen sensitive to mild impairment, such as the Montreal Cognitive Assessment; and refer when clinically meaningful concern remains. Functional and behavioural

Gendered experiences of cause-specific unmet medical need: An intersectional analysis using MAIHDA.

Unmet medical needs (UMN) persist even under universal health coverage and remain unequally distributed across social groups. Although gender differences in UMN are well documented, less is known about how gender intersects with family and work roles to shape healthcare access. We analyzed data from 230,925 adults aged ≥19 years in the 2024 Korea Community Health Survey. Outcomes were overall, time-related, and cost-related UMN. Multilevel Analysis of Individual Heterogeneity and Discriminatory Accuracy (MAIHDA) was applied using 144 intersectional strata defined by sex, household composition,

Sociodemographic and clinical factors associated with seven domains of digital health literacy: A cross-sectional study (NORFAST).

Introduction Due to limited digital health literacy (DHL), stroke survivors frequently face barriers in using digital health tools essential for post-stroke rehabilitation and self-management. DHL is a multidimensional construct, encompassing several distinct skill domains. Although sociodemographic and clinical characteristics may influence overall DHL, their associations with specific DHL domains remain poorly understood. This study therefore explores how individual DHL domains relate to patient characteristics in stroke survivors. Methods In this cross-sectional NORFAST study, stroke surviv

Mediating effect of social frailty on oral frailty and cognitive function in older adults: a cross-sectional study in a rural Chinese community.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive function has been associated with both social and oral frailty. However, few studies have explored how social frailty and oral frailty jointly relate to cognitive function. This study aimed to explore whether social frailty plays a mediating role in the association between oral frailty and cognitive function and to examine potential gender differences in this pathway. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study design, and the data were obtained from the 2022 follow-up survey of the Health Status of Rural Older Adults (HSRO). A phenomenological study of routine, independence, and help-seeking in home hospice patients living alone with terminal illness.

BACKGROUND: Patients living alone with terminal illness in home hospice face challenges distinct from those living with caregivers. While prevailing research describes patterns of service use, less is known about the lived meanings that shape how these patients organize their days and decide when to seek assistance. This study describes the lived experience of solo-dwelling adults receiving home hospice care and the conditions under which help is sought or refused. This addresses a gap that limits person-centred planning for patients who wish to remain at home. METHODS: Twelve patients of a h

Persistent Health Disparities Among Adult Cancer Survivors.

Cancer survivors face elevated risks of age- and treatment-related health conditions, possibly due to accelerated biological aging from cancer therapy. The role of social determinants of health (SDOH) in these aging trajectories remains understudied. We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 109,224 curatively treated Danish cancer survivors (lung, breast, prostate, or colon cancer, diagnosed between 1997 and 2018) and 574,022 age- and sex-matched cancer-free individuals. SDOH was assessed using educational level and cohabitation status. Using national registries, we investigated associatio
