This article presents a case study on the application of trauma-informed care on a male patient with schizophrenia and a history of childhood trauma. The nursing process was designed using the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration framework. For this case study, the "4R" core assumptions were transposed into five actionable principles (safety, trustworthiness, collaboration, empowerment, and choice), which guided all of the provided interventions. From July 14 to August 7, 2025, the nursing care focused on promoting psychological and emotional safety, facilitating the co-re

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been associated with a range of cognitive alterations; however, the relationship between PTSD and intelligence remains unclear. The aim of this systematic review was to examine potential differences in intelligence associated with exposure to traumatic events and/or a diagnosis of PTSD in adults aged 18 years and older. A systematic search was conducted across three major academic databases-PsycINFO, MEDLINE, and Web of Science-to identify empirical studies assessing intelligence or closely related cognitive constructs in individuals with PTSD or a hist

Extensive evidence suggests that war-related trauma negatively affects health, yet its long-term and transgenerational effects on psychological and physical adjustment remain poorly understood. This study examines whether individuals who experienced greater war exposure in early childhood-specifically variation in bombardment intensity across German municipalities during the Second World War-show lower, similar, or better psychological (life satisfaction, affective well-being, and mental health) and physical adjustment (self-rated and physical health) in late adulthood compared to less exposed

BACKGROUND: Experiencing trauma increases susceptibility to HIV among women in the Southern U.S, through factors such as condomless sex, coerced sex, and substance use. Despite the effectiveness of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), uptake remains low due to various barriers such as low perceived risk, lack of awareness, perceived stigma, and systemic inequities. Tailored interventions are crucial for improving access to PrEP for this vulnerable population.
METHODS: The purpose of the study is to develop an integrated mental health clinic-based behavioral intervention for increasing PrEP uptake

This article explores Ferenczi's (1932, 1933) concept of "identification with the aggressor" as an effect of psychic trauma, highlighting three of its vicissitudes: submissive love, destructive hatred, and self-hatred. We take a closer look at the fate of self-hatred, illustrating it with the "mongrel complex," a term coined by Brazilian writer Nelson Rodrigues (1958), alongside biographical excerpts related to the antisemitism experienced by Freud and his father, Jacob. Additionally, we point out an unprecedented association between Ferenczi's trauma theory and Freud's studies on Witz (wit),

BACKGROUND: Despite growing attention of the effects of childhood trauma on suicidality, its links to day-to-day fluctuations in suicide risk indicators (defeat, entrapment) and the mediating roles of daily sleep and hassle appraisals remain unclear. This study (1) tests associations between childhood trauma and daily sleep, hassles, and suicide risk indicators; (2) examines mediation by daily sleep and hassle appraisals; and (3) assesses whether trauma moderates daily sleep/hassle-suicide risk relationships.
METHODS: A total of 168 participants with a recent history of suicide ideation or at

This paper explores Freud's concept of unconscious guilt (Freud, S. 1923. "The Ego and the Id". In The Standard Edition of the Complete Psychological Works of Sigmund Freud, Vol. 19. 1-66), as illuminated in Sebald's masterpiece, Austerlitz (Sebald, W. G. 2001. Austerlitz, Translated by Anthea Bell. London: Penguin Books). Both writers examine the human impulse to look away from suffering, personal and collective, and the guilt inherent both in avoidance and in bearing witness. Sebald, preoccupied with Germany's post-war "self-amnesia" (Sebald, W. G. 2003. On the Natural History of Destruction

OBJECTIVE: Children who spend time in foster care are at risk for adverse developmental outcomes, including sleep problems. Yet, research examining sleep and emotional memory has primarily focused on children with no history of foster care placement. Additionally, most accounts of sleep problems among children with a foster care history rely on caregiver-report rather than objective measures. This study examined emotional memory and sleep using both objective and subjective reports.
METHODS: Participants included 3- to 5-year-old children who were adopted from foster care in the U.S. (n = 32)

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with increased long-term mental and physical health risk, yet inter-individual variation indicates that resilience is possible. Distinct trajectories of sustained mental well-being have been observed among individuals exposed to ACEs, predicting favorable long-term outcomes. However, the biopsychosocial markers underpinning sustained trajectories of resilience remain poorly understood. This study aimed to identify factors that predict higher well-being ('resilient') trajectories over time in individuals with and without ACE exposu

PURPOSE: Early feeding practices such as feeding to soothe distress can shape children's self-regulation and eating behaviors. Maternal childhood maltreatment history and emotion regulation difficulties may contribute to greater reliance on feeding to soothe, though further evidence is needed. Furthermore, cultural differences in feeding may influence the association between emotion regulation and feeding to soothe. This study examined whether maternal trauma and emotion regulation difficulties predicted feeding to soothe and differences by racial marginalization group.

BACKGROUND: Nursing students exposed to traumatized patients during clinical are at risk of developing secondary traumatic stress (STS). However, the study of STS in this population has been limited by both a lack of clarity on the concept of STS and the lack of generalizable findings.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence, severity, and experience of STS in traditional, non-accelerated prelicensure baccalaureate nursing students in the United States. The relationship between STS and personal and clinical learning environment factors was also explored.

Self-injurious behaviors (SIBs) represent a major public health concern in the United States. Although sexual minority individuals experience disproportionately high rates of SIBs, research identifying population-specific risk factors remains limited. This study examined how stressful experiences common among sexual minority (SM) adults relate to the likelihood of SIBs in SM versus heterosexual adults. A community sample of adults aged 18-54 years (Mage = 30.52 years, SD = 9.66, 59.8% assigned female at birth) completed self-report and interview measures of trait-level SIB risk factors (emotio

This article examines how intergenerational memory shapes clinicians' moral experience and empathic engagement in everyday clinical practice. Drawing on a reflexive account of a routine medical encounter that unexpectedly activated inherited histories of war, displacement, and fear, the essay is situated within anthropological and medical humanities scholarship on clinician subjectivation, postmemory, and moral experience. While existing literature has examined how professional training and institutional norms shape clinicians' subjectivities, less attention has been paid to how pre-profession

Nurses are regularly exposed to workplace traumatic events, including violence, aggression, witnessing patient deaths, and self-harming behavior and suicide attempts. These experiences can adversely affect nurse well-being and can interrelate with personal histories of trauma. Despite this, psychological trauma in nursing remains underexplored. Foli's mid-range theory of psychological trauma (2022) provides a contemporary framework for addressing this gap by identifying 7 types of psychological trauma in nursing practice while incorporating personal experiences beyond the clinical setting. Thi

Museum decolonization has become a central concern in contemporary museology, raising questions that extend beyond curatorial reform to the construction of collective memory, the psychological elaboration of the colonial past, and the configuration of postcolonial identities. This review synthesizes recent literature on the decolonial turn in museums from a psychological perspective, addressing institutional critique, participatory practices, historical trauma, epistemic justice, and the affective dimensions of collective memory. It also identifies key risks-tokenism, aestheticization of diffe

Military personnel are routinely exposed to a range of occupational and environmental hazards (including chemical agents, radiation, physical stress, and psychological trauma) that may uniquely influence their long-term health outcomes. Emerging evidence suggests that such exposures could alter cancer risk profiles, yet comprehensive comparisons of tumor prevalence and distribution between military and civilian populations remain limited. Leveraging a nationally representative dataset, this study addresses this gap by systematically comparing cancer profiles between United States military vete
