Comparative evaluation of fiber and metal posts on mandibular bone microstructure: a fractal dimension analysis.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to quantitatively evaluate the effects of prefabricated fiber and metal posts on mandibular trabecular bone microarchitecture by comparing fractal dimension values derived from panoramic radiographs at pre-treatment and post-treatment time points. METHODS: A cohort of 101 individuals (50 fiber posts, 51 metal posts) was analyzed. To ensure comparability, both groups were matched regarding age, gender (p > 0.05). Digital panoramic radiographs were obtained at pre-treatment and post-treatment time points. Images were saved in uncompressed Tagged Image File

Does premolar extraction influence the biomechanics when leveling the curve of Spee? A finite element analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of first premolar extraction on stress distribution and initial tooth displacement when leveling the curve of Spee with different archwire dimensions and materials by means of finite element analysis. METHODS: Overall, 2 finite element models were created to simulate the following therapeutic situations: (1) a complete mandibular dentition with the corresponding anatomic structures and (2) a mandibular dentition with first premolar extractions. In addition, 2 archwire dimensions (0.016-in round and 0.017 × 0.025-in rectangular) a

Reliability and reproducibility of a best-fit superimposition method for digital models of adult patients treated without extractions.

INTRODUCTION: Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is considered the gold standard for 3-dimensional (3D) superimposition in assessing tooth movement during orthodontic treatment. However, given current guidelines emphasizing the reduction of radiation exposure, this study aimed to evaluate the accuracy, reliability, and reproducibility of a digital model superimposition technique that does not require CBCT. METHODS: This retrospective study included 10 adult patients who underwent comprehensive orthodontic treatment without extractions. All patients had full-head CBCT scans and corresponding

Calcifying Odontogenic Cyst Exhibiting Focal Clear Cell Change: A Diagnostic Challenge.

Calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC), commonly termed the Gorlin cyst, is a developmental odontogenic cyst characterized by "ghost cells" within its epithelial lining. The World Health Organization classifies it as a benign cystic entity with distinctive histopathological features. Although it constitutes approximately 1%-2% of odontogenic cysts and tumors, its diverse clinicopathological spectrum may complicate diagnosis. We present an unusual case of COC with clear cell changes in a 48-year-old female presenting with pain and swelling in the left posterior mandible. Radiographic evaluation reve

The effect of resting tongue pressure, lip-cheek pressure, and interdental force on mandibular arch collapse and mesial molar drift: A preliminary 3D finite element study.

Relapse of aligned mandibular anterior teeth and the progressive collapse of the mandibular anterior arch are historically significant problems for orthodontists. The etiology of this collapse, and the cause of mesial molar drift, are unknown. However, light continuous (quasi-continuous) intra-oral pressures and forces applied to the mandibular dentition have been implicated. To explore this further, we use three-dimensional finite element analysis to investigate the influence of these intra-oral loads (tongue pressure, lip-cheek pressure, and interdental force) on macroscopic teeth displaceme

Cranial osteology of Neotropical squamate reptiles of the genus Riama (Gymnophthalmidae: Cercosaurinae).

Cranial bones of squamate reptiles diverge in shape and structure across lineages, while preserving the basic skull plan. Therefore, variation in cranial morphology of squamates is key to understanding phylogenetic relationships, species delimitation, and lifestyles, which ultimately contribute to insights into their evolution and ecology. Nevertheless, although Gymnophthalmidae is the most diverse endemic non-ophidian squamate family in the Neotropics, studies on comparative cranial osteology within this lineage remain scarce. Herein, we thoroughly describe and compare the external skull anat

Nanomechanics of mandible wear in insects.

Many animals rely on specialised mouthparts to process food. Because this is a mechanically demanding task, mouthparts often wear, with potentially serious consequences for feeding performance and thus fitness. The biomechanics of wear are therefore of clear biological relevance, but remain poorly understood, especially in insects, where conventional engineering wear tests are hard to implement. Here, we present a nanomechanical characterisation of the mandibular epicuticle of three insect species: two leaf-cutting specialists, one with and one without transition-metal inclusions, and an omniv

Influence of maxillary clockwise rotation with posterior impaction and mandibular setback by SSRO or IVRO for mandibular prognathism on volume change in upper airway.

PURPOSE: In orthognathic surgery for skeletal mandibular prognathism, maxillary clockwise rotation with posterior impaction and mandibular setback is often performed. Change in airway volume after orthognathic surgery is one of the concerns. The present study was performed to evaluate the effects of maxillary clockwise rotation with posterior impaction and the influence of different mandibular techniques, including sagittal splitting ramus osteotomy (SSRO) and intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy (IVRO), on upper airway volume changes before and after bimaxillary surgery for mandibular prognathi

Rural-Urban Disparities in Survival Among Patients With Malignant Primary Osseous Neoplasms of the Spine and Sacropelvis: A Population-Based Cohort Study.

Background Malignant primary osseous neoplasms of the spine and sacropelvis are rare tumors whose outcomes rely heavily on specialized, guideline-driven care, which is concentrated in metropolitan referral centers. Investigations of rurality in this population have been limited by single-histology cohorts, small numbers of rural patients, and unadjusted comparisons, and none have weighed geographic disadvantage directly against the socioeconomic conditions with which it coexists. This study aimed to determine whether rural residence is independently associated with overall survival and cause-s

When Did We Learn to See Malocclusion? Böcklin's Death, the Deviated Mandible, and the Orthodontic Eye.

Arnold Böcklin's Self-Portrait with Death Playing the Fiddle (1872) is usually interpreted as a modern memento mori: the artist pauses at his work while Death plays a fiddle immediately behind him. Yet a closer anatomical inspection reveals another striking feature. Böcklin's own mouth is closed, whereas Death's skull has an open jaw that appears to deviate laterally. The skeleton seems almost to sing while playing a fiddle with only one string-the lowest G string. Although the apparent mandibular displacement should not be diagnosed as malocclusion from a painting, it invites an orthodontic r
