Effects of LED photobiomodulation on pain, oedema, trismus, and the quality of life following the extraction of the mandibular third molar: a randomized blinded clinical trial.

The extraction of the third molar is a frequent surgical procedure often associated with postoperative sequelae such as pain, oedema, and trismus, which can negatively impact patients' quality of life. This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial aimed to evaluate the efficacy of low-level light-emitting diode (LED) photobiomodulation (660 nm, continuous wave) in reducing these sequelae after mandibular third molar surgery. Forty-two patients were allocated to an active LED group (n = 21) or a placebo group (n = 21). Pain (visual analogue scale), oedema (linear facial measu

Evaluation of prevalence and length of the anterior loop of mental nerve using cone beam computed tomography.

INTRODUCTION: The anterior loop (AnL) of the mental nerve is anatomically defined as the segment where the neurovascular bundle courses anteriorly and inferiorly to the mental foramen (MF) before looping back to exit through it. This structure is a critical consideration in determining optimal implant placement in the mandibular premolar region. The MF itself is an essential anatomical landmark, particularly for effective local anesthesia and for minimizing the risk of iatrogenic injury during surgical procedures in the premolar area. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) enables enhanced visua

Biomechanical behavior of various post-and-core systems in severely compromised mandibular molars: A 3D finite element analysis.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Selecting a post-and-core system for endodontically treated posterior teeth remains challenging. Cast post-and-core (CPC) and fiber post with composite resin core (FPCC) systems are used to restore structurally compromised teeth. Their biomechanical interactions with the remaining tooth structure under functional loading remain poorly understood. PURPOSE: The purpose of this finite element analysis study was to assess how CPC and FPCC restorations influence internal stresses and interfacial stress distributions in a restored mandibular first molar under functional loadin

Reliability and reproducibility of a best-fit superimposition method for digital models of adult patients treated without extractions.

INTRODUCTION: Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is considered the gold standard for 3-dimensional (3D) superimposition in assessing tooth movement during orthodontic treatment. However, given current guidelines emphasizing the reduction of radiation exposure, this study aimed to evaluate the accuracy, reliability, and reproducibility of a digital model superimposition technique that does not require CBCT. METHODS: This retrospective study included 10 adult patients who underwent comprehensive orthodontic treatment without extractions. All patients had full-head CBCT scans and corresponding

Calcifying Odontogenic Cyst Exhibiting Focal Clear Cell Change: A Diagnostic Challenge.

Calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC), commonly termed the Gorlin cyst, is a developmental odontogenic cyst characterized by "ghost cells" within its epithelial lining. The World Health Organization classifies it as a benign cystic entity with distinctive histopathological features. Although it constitutes approximately 1%-2% of odontogenic cysts and tumors, its diverse clinicopathological spectrum may complicate diagnosis. We present an unusual case of COC with clear cell changes in a 48-year-old female presenting with pain and swelling in the left posterior mandible. Radiographic evaluation reve

The effect of resting tongue pressure, lip-cheek pressure, and interdental force on mandibular arch collapse and mesial molar drift: A preliminary 3D finite element study.

Relapse of aligned mandibular anterior teeth and the progressive collapse of the mandibular anterior arch are historically significant problems for orthodontists. The etiology of this collapse, and the cause of mesial molar drift, are unknown. However, light continuous (quasi-continuous) intra-oral pressures and forces applied to the mandibular dentition have been implicated. To explore this further, we use three-dimensional finite element analysis to investigate the influence of these intra-oral loads (tongue pressure, lip-cheek pressure, and interdental force) on macroscopic teeth displaceme
