A sound approach: scoping review of adult lower urinary tract foreign body recognition and management.

INTRODUCTION: Insertion of foreign bodies into the lower urinary tract by adults is an uncommon but clinically important presentation encountered by urologists and emergency providers across a range of motivations. Retained or migrated objects can lead to serious complications including infection, calculus formation, and urethral trauma, often necessitating careful and complex management. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review following the PRISMA extension for Scoping Reviews. Because only published, de-identified case material was used, institutional review board approval was not required.

Lower urinary tract symptoms in adults treated for vesico-ureteral reflux in childhood, compared to healthy controls.

OBJECTIVE: To compare lower urinary tract (LUT) symptoms in young adults with previous vesico-ureteral reflux (VUR) and healthy controls. VUR is associated with LUT dysfunction in childhood but less is known regarding long-term prognosis. METHODS: A questionnaire was sent to 483 patients treated for VUR between 1993 and 2003 and a control group of 640 healthy young adults. Presence of LUT symptoms was compared by multivariable logistic regression, expressed as odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI), adjusting for age, sex and body mass index. RESULTS: The study group response rat

Combined and individual effects of neoadjuvant chemotherapy and lymph node dissection on survival in non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer undergoing radical cystectomy.

BACKGROUND: The roles of neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) and lymph node dissection (LND), particularly their combined use, remain unclear in patients with non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) undergoing radical cystectomy (RC). METHODS: Patients diagnosed with NMIBC and treated with RC were identified from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database. Temporal trends in the utilization of NAC, LND, and their combination were analyzed. Kaplan-Meier and Cox proportional hazards models were used to compare overall survival (OS) across different treatment groups, including NAC, L

Substaging and Stratified Treatment of T1 Bladder Cancer - a Nationwide Register-Based Study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Substaging of T1 bladder cancer (BC) was implemented in Denmark in 2010 based on depth of lamina propria invasion-pT1a (superficial) and pT1b (deep)-with bladder-sparing therapy recommended for pT1a and early cystectomy for pT1b. This study evaluated outcomes of this substage-guided approach in a nationwide cohort. METHODS: In this nationwide register-based study (2012-2018), all patients diagnosed with T1 BC were identified from the Danish Bladder Cancer Database. Patients were stratified by substage (pT1a, pT1b, unspecified pT1). Overall survival was estimated usin

An Unusual Presentation of Bladder Carcinoma in a Visceral Hernia: A Case Report and Literature Review.

INTRODUCTION: Bladder carcinoma (BC) is the most prevalent malignancy of the urinary system. These cancers are primarily seen in adults > 60 years old and mostly present with microscopic or frank hematuria or obstruction of the urinary system. However, these rare cancers can be found in hernias. CASE PRESENTATION: This report discusses a rare, localized bladder urothelial carcinoma (UC) manifestation. The patient had presented with lower abdominal pain several times. However, no accurate diagnosis was made due to the unspecified pain features. After being referred to a radiologic evaluation w

Mast Cells and Interstitial Cystitis/Bladder Pain Syndrome Revisited.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: There is significant variation in interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) biopsy processing and reporting. The objective of this study was to review pathology reports from a large IC/BPS patient cohort to identify differences in findings. We hypothesize that variation in IC/BPS bladder biopsy reporting might be most frequent when it comes to mast-cell counts. METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of 461 diagnostic pathology reports collected from our IRB-approved prospective study of patients diagnosed with IC/BPS at the Urology Clinic at Wak

Presentation and management of urethral erosion caused by mid-urethral sling.

BACKGROUND: Mid-urethral slings (MUS) have been the standard of care in surgical management of female stress urinary incontinence (SUI) internationally. Complications including pain and erosion has led to a temporary "pause" of their use in the UK and Ireland. We report on our experience to date on patient presentation, operative management, and post-operative outcomes in management of MUS erosion. METHODS: Review of female patients who had partial MUS removal due to urethral erosion over a 7-year period. Data on patient presentation, operative technique, and post-operative outcomes were coll

Causality between allergic diseases and kidney diseases: a two-sample Mendelian randomization study.

BACKGROUND: Evidence from observational studies and clinical trials suggests that the allergic diseases (ADs) are associated with kidney diseases (KDs). However, the causal association between them remains to be determined. We used bidirectional two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to evaluate the potential causality between them. METHODS: Mendelian randomization (MR) was performed using publicly available genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary datasets. Inverse variance weighted (IVW), weighted median, MR-Egger regression, simple mode, and weighted mode methods are used to

The Perfect Step is the first one: Improving the quality of life for patients with spinal cord injuries through structured exercise.

CONTEXT: More than 1 million people live with spinal cord injuries (SCI) in the United States alone. Despite research suggesting improvement in functional activities in patients who participate in regular physical activity, there is limited data on the specific impact of exercise as it pertains to patient-reported quality-of-life (QoL) measures of mood, pain, independence, or medical complications. Patients with SCI participating in a longitudinal exercise program at a community-based fitness facility (The Perfect Step) in Pomona, California were invited to participate in this study. This prog
