Metachronous nasopharyngeal carcinoma following sinonasal inverted papilloma - a diagnostic enigma.

BACKGROUND: Inverted papilloma (IP) is a benign Schneiderian epithelial tumour with a well-recognized potential for recurrence and malignant transformation, most commonly to squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Carcinoma arising in the nasopharynx after prior IP is exceedingly rare, and distinguishing malignant conversion from a metachronous nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) poses a diagnostic challenge. CASE REPORT: We report a rare, interesting case of a nasopharyngeal lesion with histopathological features of non-keratinizing SCC in a patient previously treated surgically for sinonasal IP. CONCLUSIO

Nasopharyngeal pneumococcal carriage and serotype landscape in children, adolescents and young adults in Türkiye.

UNLABELLED: After the widespread use of pneumococcal conjugated vaccines (PCVs), pneumococcal carriage, especially due to some vaccine serotypes, has been shown to decrease, but carriage with non-vaccine serotypes and some persistent vaccine types of lineages has been demonstrated to continue. Evaluation of pneumococcal carriage helps to understand disease epidemiology. In this multicenter study, we aimed to determine pneumococcal carriage and serotype distribution in children, adolescents, and young adults aged 0-24 years in Türkiye after the pandemic era. This multicenter study was conducted

Global trends and socioeconomic disparities in cancer burden among adolescents and young adults, 1990-2021.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents and young adults (AYAs, 10-24 years) constitute a distinct cancer population in whom malignancy arises during critical life transitions yet leads to substantial long-term morbidity and socioeconomic consequences. However, their global cancer burden and risk-factor profile remain incompletely characterized, especially in low- and middle-income settings. METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of the Global Burden of Disease 2021 dataset, synthesizing estimates of cancer incidence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) for 32 cancer types among AYAs ac

MRI-based deep learning model predicts recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma in post-radiation nasopharyngeal necrosis.

BACKGROUND: The pretreatment identification of post-radiation nasopharyngeal necrosis (PRNN) combined with recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma (referred to as cancer-infiltrative PRNN) is crucial for the diagnosis and treatment of PRNN. As the first study to identify recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma in patients with PRNN, we aimed to develop a deep learning (DL)-based predictive model using routine MRI to distinguish cancer-infiltrative PRNN from cancer-free PRNN. METHODS: MRIs of 437 patients with PRNN were manually labeled and randomly divided into training and validation cohorts. Video Sw

Artificial intelligence-assisted real-time nasopharyngeal cancer diagnostic model enhances rhinologist performance: a prospective multi-reader study.

BACKGROUND: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) poses significant diagnostic challenges due to the anatomical complexity of the nasopharynx and reliance on endoscopic visual interpretation, often leading to delayed detection and unnecessary biopsies. Although artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms have shown promise in enhancing endoscopic cancer diagnosis, their real-world impact on clinician diagnostic performance remains insufficiently characterized. METHODS: In this prospective, multi-reader study, 47 clinicians, including experts, residents, and trainees, interpreted 200 nasoendoscopic image

The value of nasopharyngeal brush versus plasma EBV DNA detection in diagnosing local recurrence of nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) remains a major challenge due to the high incidence of recurrence, often leading to therapeutic failure. Early detection of recurrence is critical, yet effective surveillance methods are limited. This study aims to evaluate the utility of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) DNA detection in nasopharyngeal brush samples for identifying recurrent NPC. A total of 187 NPC patients who had undergone radical radiotherapy with or without chemotherapy were included. EBV DNA levels in both nasopharyngeal brush and plasma samples were analyzed using real-time quantitative PCR. Head a

Extranodal Natural Killer/T-cell Lymphoma With Skin Involvement: A Case Report.

Extranodal natural killer/T-cell lymphoma (ENKTL) is an aggressive neoplasm derived from cytotoxic T cells or natural killer (NK) cells, with higher prevalence in Asia and Latin America. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection plays a crucial role in its pathogenesis, being detected in most cases through in situ hybridization for EBV-encoded RNA (EBER). ENKTL predominantly affects men between 40 and 50 years of age, mainly involving the upper aerodigestive tract, particularly the nose and nasopharynx. However, it can also present in extranasal sites, where it tends to behave more aggressively. Clin

Phase 1 and preclinical studies reveal safety, pharmacokinetics, and efficacy of intranasal delivery of the influenza antibody CR9114.

Systemic administration of influenza virus-specific monoclonal antibodies achieves low concentrations in the nasal mucosa, the portal of infection. Intranasal administration may be more relevant for preventing infection, but the pharmacokinetics of intranasal influenza antibodies is unknown. We present results of preclinical studies and first-in-human phase 1 trials of the intranasally administered CR9114, an anti-hemagglutinin stem antibody that protects against influenza A and B viruses. We tested safety and tolerability of different schedules and doses; pharmacokinetics in nasal mucosal lin

Corynebacterium drakensteinense sp. nov., isolated from the nasopharynx of a healthy South African infant.

Emerging evidence supports the role of the nasopharyngeal microbiome in respiratory health, including association with conditions such as asthma and respiratory tract infections. One dominant commensal genus is Corynebacterium, members of which are commonly present in the nasopharynx of infants. These commensal Corynebacterium spp. have been reported to correlate with respiratory health. In this paper, we present isolate MNWGS58T isolated from the nasopharynx of a South African infant. Genomic analysis of the whole-genome sequence of MNWGS58T revealed that it is phylogenetically closely relate

Integrated multiplex PCR and metatranscriptomics reveal upper-lower airway microbial landscapes in pediatric respiratory infections.

Despite widespread use of multiple PCR, a substantial proportion of pediatric acute respiratory tract infections (ARTIs) lack identifiable pathogens and are classified as unknown etiology. The microbial characteristics and clinical relevance of these cases remain unclear. In this study, we compared the airway microbiomes of PCR-positive and PCR-negative ARTIs and examined their relationships with sampling site and disease severity. A total of 514 hospitalized children with ARTIs were enrolled. Nasopharyngeal swabs (NS) and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) samples were tested using a 22-targ
