Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae, which primarily affects the skin and peripheral nerves. Brazil remains as the country with the second largest number of cases in the world. We report the case of three patients diagnosed with indeterminate leprosy in the same family. Two patients were HIV positive. An active search led to the discovery of the index case. It was crucial to persist in the search of the index case. This report shows how important it is to teach physicians and the general population about the signs and symptoms of leprosy. Early diagnosis and

Histological changes suggestive of leprosy in clinically normal skin have been well documented in the lepromatous spectrum and rarely in the tuberculoid spectrum of the disease. This study attempts to evaluate the histology of clinically normal appearing skin in cases of borderline tuberculoid and tuberculoid leprosy. Biopsies from lesional and a clinically normal appearing skin from newly diagnosed patients with BT or TT leprosy seen in the outpatient department over a period of one year were evaluated by a blinded pathologist. Sixty five patients were included in the study. Six patients had

BACKGROUND: Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease produced by Mycobacterium leprae. In 1997 Venezuela reached the goal of elimination of leprosy as a public health problem (according to the World Health Organization a prevalence rate of ≤ 1/10,000 inhabitants), but five states still had prevalence rates over that goal. For this study we selected Cojedes State, where prevalence rates remain over the elimination goal.
OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the real leprosy situation in high-prevalence areas of Cojedes State.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seven communities of Cojedes State were selected because they h

Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae, which mainly affects the skin and nervous system. The disease has several clinical forms. This study investigated the MICA and HLA-B genes in 223 samples from leprosy patients and 201 samples from healthy individuals matched for age, gender and ethnical background. Of the patients, 153 had multibacillary, 45 paucibacillary and 25 indeterminate leprosy. The aim of this case-control study was to assess whether the MICA alleles influence susceptibility for leprosy or affect the subtype of the disease in a population of southe

BACKGROUND: Previous studies investigating the role of cytokines in the pathogenesis of leprosy have either been on only small numbers of patients or have not combined clinical and histological data. The INFIR Cohort study is a prospective study of 303 new multibacillary leprosy patients to identify risk factors for reaction and nerve damage. This study characterised the cellular infiltrate in skin and nerve biopsies using light microscopic and immunohistochemical techniques to identify any association of cytokine markers, nerve and cell markers with leprosy reactions.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to evaluate risk factors for physical disability at the moment of leprosy diagnosis.
METHODS: This is a retrospective, descriptive and exploratory investigation of 19,283 patients with leprosy, registered in the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil, between 2000 and 2005.
RESULTS: The risk of Grade 2 disability was 16.5-fold higher in patients with lepromatous leprosy, and 12.8-fold higher in patients presenting the borderline form, compared to patients presenting indeterminate leprosy. The occurrence of more than one thickened nerve increased the odds of

INTRODUCTION: In 1997, after obtaining a combined multi-state double-blind randomly controlled clinical trial study from nine Indian centers involved in the treatment of Hansen's Disease, the Ministry of Health adapted the single dose ROM Therapy approach in those cases involving the treatment of a single skin lesion, paucibacillary leprosy without evidence of peripheral nerve trunk involvement and indication of negative baciloscope, in the Referral Centers in Brazil. The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the single dose ROM Therapy approach in those patients who were treated from t

UNLABELLED: Leprosy is an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae. The peptide human beta-defensin 1 is an antimicrobial effector of innate epithelial immunity. A study was done on the association of three single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the beta-defensin 1 gene (DEFB1) - 668 C/G (-44 C/G or rs1800972; in 5' UTR), 692 A/G (-20 A/G or rs11362; in 5' UTR) and A1836G (rs1800971; in 3' UTR) - with leprosy susceptibility per se and clinical leprosy variants. The SNPs were genotyped by real-time polymerase chain reaction (rt-PCR) and PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphisms.

Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae, presenting with different clinicopathological forms. These great variety of presentations make the diagnosis of leprosy a difficult challenge in countries where the disease is not endemic. Moreover, a discordance between the clinical and histopathological diagnosis in classifying a case of leprosy can complicate the issue. We report a 43-year-old woman in whom the diagnosis of leprosy was challenging, especially, because the biopsy was sent without any clinical suspicion and Italy is a nonendemic area. The clinical informa

This retrospective study was done to determine the epidemiological and clinical profile of leprosy patients in a tertiary care centre, Indira Gandhi Medical College, Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, India. In this study, we included patients registered from January 2004 to December 2008 with the urban leprosy clinic of our tertiary care centre. Data regarding demographic details, clinical features, treatment and complications was extracted from the records of the leprosy clinic. 163 patients attended the clinic during this period with male to female ratio of 3:1. Majority of patients (47.8%) were in

Leprosy in a preschool child appearing at the age of four years is reported due to its rarity, particularly at a time when we are hoping for its elimination. A 5-year-old female child presented with an erythematous rash over-her right buttock for last one year. Histopathological examination from the patch revealed it to be a case of indeterminate leprosy. The child responded favourably with antileprosy treatment.

BACKGROUND: Several clinical and laboratory observations point to the possible microscopical affection of normal-looking skin in leprosy.
OBJECTIVE: This study was carried out to verify the microscopical affection of apparently normal-looking skin in different types of leprosy.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study included 50 patients with different clinical types of leprosy. Biopsies from both skin lesions and normal-looking skin were obtained from each patient and examined for microscopical evidence of leprosy.
RESULTS: Microscopical affection of normal-looking skin was detected in 52% of our

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of tuberculoid leprosy is often difficult on hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) due to the absence of demonstrable nerve destruction. This study evaluates the utility of S-100 staining in identifying nerve fragmentation and differentiation of tuberculoid leprosy from other cutaneous granulomatous diseases.
METHODS: Fifty cases of leprosy including 38 borderline tuberculoid (BT), two tuberculoid (TT), and 10 indeterminate leprosy (IL) were studied. Eleven controls of non-lepromatous cutaneous granulomatous lesions were included. S-100 was used for identifying the following d
