Research trends in minimally invasive partial splenectomy: a bibliometric mapping review with cross-database comparison.

BACKGROUND: Minimally invasive partial splenectomy (MIPS) is used for hereditary hematologic disorders, splenic cysts, hydatid disease, benign tumors, and selected traumatic lesions. However, its literature remains dispersed across patient groups, indications, and surgical specialties. This study mapped the development, contributors, knowledge base, and thematic structure of MIPS research and examined the concordance of its principal patterns across databases. METHODS: Articles and reviews published from 1 January 1995 to 29 August 2026 were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (

Pelvic splenosis and endometriosis in adolescent with hereditary spherocytosis.

The patient is a 16-year-old with a history of hereditary spherocytosis. At age 12, she underwent a laparoscopic partial converted to total splenectomy for intraoperative bleeding. The spleen was placed in a retrieval bag and removed via morcellation. She first reported abdominal pain at age 8, with dysmenorrhea after menarche at age 13. Her dysmenorrhea was managed with a progesterone IUD. Due to worsening pain, she underwent MRI which showed multiple lobulated structures throughout the pelvis and ventral abdomen, suggestive of endometriomas versus splenules. Laparoscopy revealed dozens of bl

Angiomatoid Fibrous Histiocytoma in a Child with Hereditary Spherocytosis: A Rare Co-occurrence.

INTRODUCTION: Angiomatoid fibrous histiocytoma (AFH) is a rare soft-tissue tumor of low malignant potential, and its radiological appearance is often non-specific, mimicking benign cysts, hematomas, or infections, necessitating histopathological and immunohistochemical confirmation. While hematological malignancies have been reported in Hereditary Spherocytosis (HS), no association with AFH has been documented. We present the first case of AFH involving the shoulder soft tissue in a post-splenectomy adolescent with HS, highlighting diagnostic challenges and a possible link between chronic hema

Red blood cell metabolome maps disease burden, mutation class, and splenectomy status in hereditary spherocytosis.

Hereditary spherocytosis (HS) is caused by inherited defects in red blood cell (RBC) membrane and membrane-skeletal proteins, but the metabolic features associated with genotype, splenic selection, RBC injury, and clinical burden remain incompletely resolved. We performed RBC metabolomics in the VASCUSPHERO cohort, including 16 controls and 22 HS samples, and integrated omics data with splenectomy status, RBC deformability, microparticles, phosphatidylserine exposure, reactive oxygen species, calcium, CD47, complete blood count traits, and leukocyte subsets. The HS cohort included 12 spectrin

Severe Hereditary Pyropoikilocytosis/Hereditary Elliptocytosis-Like Phenotype Associated With a Heterozygous SPTA1 Variant in a Cambodian Girl: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Hereditary elliptocytosis (HE) is typically a mild or asymptomatic red blood cell membrane disorder characterized predominantly by elliptocytes, whereas hereditary pyropoikilocytosis (HPP) represents the severe end of the HE spectrum, with early-onset hemolysis, marked poikilocytosis, red cell fragmentation, and pronounced membrane instability. We report a Cambodian girl with a severe HPP/HE-like phenotype associated with a heterozygous SPTA1 variant of uncertain significance, emphasizing the importance of integrating clinical, hematologic, morphologic, and molecular findings to su

Sacral Brodie's abscess in a patient with hereditary spherocytosis.

Brodie's abscess is a subacute form of osteomyelitis typically seen in the metaphysis of long bones. Its occurrence in the sacrum is extremely rare. We report a case of Brodie's abscess involving the S2 vertebra in a male in his early 30s with hereditary spherocytosis, who presented with chronic low back pain without systemic signs of infection. Imaging revealed a well-defined, sclerotic lesion in S2 suggestive of chronic osteomyelitis. A minimally invasive biopsy and curettage was performed. Intraoperative findings suggested early infection, though cultures were negative. Histopathology showe

Hereditary Spherocytosis: Linking Ion Transport Defects to Osmotic Gradient Ektacytometry Profiles-A Review.

Hereditary spherocytosis (HS) is the most common inherited red blood cell (RBC) membrane disorder and has traditionally been attributed to defects in cytoskeletal proteins such as spectrin, ankyrin, band 3, and protein 4.2. Growing evidence, however, shows that disturbances in ion transport also contribute to HS pathophysiology. This review summarizes current understanding of HS by integrating membrane structural defects with abnormalities in ion homeostasis and highlights the diagnostic value of osmotic gradient ektacytometry (OGE). Beyond membrane instability, HS erythrocytes exhibit increas

A Triad of Hematologic Diseases in a Military Member Requiring Splenectomy Case Report.

Hereditary spherocytosis and sickle cell disease are two distinct hematologic diseases that affect the morphology of the red blood cell, causing implications related to splenic sequestration. Concurrent disease is very rare, with even fewer reported instances requiring surgical intervention. Furthermore, an individual with a third concomitant hematologic abnormality such as Factor VII deficiency, which degrades the normal clotting cascade, has not previously been reported. We describe an active-duty servicemember with known hereditary spherocytosis, sickle cell trait, and Factor VII deficiency

Dose-dependent effects of diamide and glutaraldehyde on red blood cell deformability, viscosity, and morphology.

Red blood cells (RBC) deformability enables passage through capillaries, ensuring efficient microcirculatory flow and oxygen transport. Impaired deformability contributes to vascular complications and is associated with conditions such as sickle cell anemia, hereditary spherocytosis, and diabetes. Diamide and glutaraldehyde are commonly used in vitro to simulate pathological rigidity, yet their dose-dependent effects on RBC mechanics remain incompletely characterized. This study investigates the effects of diamide (10-200 μM) and glutaraldehyde (8-159,800 μM) on RBC morphology, deformability a

Red Blood Cells in Normal and Pathological States: Redox Reactions of Hemoglobin.

Red blood cells (RBCs) play a key role in vascular origin pathologies such as nephropathy, retinopathy, and neuropathy. Altered RBCs also occur in the case of hereditary spherocytosis, hemoglobinopathies, sickle cell disease, thalassemia and hemolytic anemia. The consequence of damage to the cell membrane and cytoskeleton are changes in RBC deformability, which play an important role in microcirculation. In turn, oxidative changes in hemoglobin lead to impaired oxygen transport to cells and tissues and, consequently, to ischemia and hypoxia. In this review, we discuss the structure of normal a

Transient Unexplained Severe Acute Hyperbilirubinaemia and Cholestasis in a Patient With Hereditary Spherocytosis.

Hereditary spherocytosis is an inherited red cell membrane disorder resulting in haemolytic anaemia. Recognised clinical manifestations include anaemia, jaundice, splenomegaly and gallstones. Here we describe the case of a 40-year-old male with hereditary spherocytosis presenting with severe hyperbilirubinaemia. Liver biopsy demonstrated features consistent with acute severe cholestasis. Despite extensive investigations for gallstone disease and other causes of liver pathology, no aetiology was identified. There are very few reports in the literature describing cases of profound unexplained ja

Optimal Corticosteroid Therapy Based on Liver Biopsy for Severe Immune-Mediated Hepatitis During Pembrolizumab Treatment: A Case Report.

Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), including pembrolizumab, are widely used to treat advanced non-small cell lung cancer; however, they are associated with immune-related adverse events, including immune-mediated hepatitis. Although systemic corticosteroids are recommended as first-line therapy for severe immune-mediated hepatitis, the optimal initial dose remains unclear, and current guidelines specify a wide range of doses. Herein, we report the case of a 76-year-old man with lung adenocarcinoma, a history of resolved hepatitis B virus infection, ulcerative colitis in long-term remission,

Symptomatic Recurrent Splenomegaly Following Partial Splenectomy in Patients With Hereditary Spherocytosis.

BACKGROUND: Hereditary spherocytosis (HS) is an inherited hematologic disorder characterized by spherical erythrocytes that are prematurely destroyed in the spleen. Total splenectomy (TS) and partial splenectomy (PS) are surgical interventions used to manage HS, but long-term outcomes, including recurrence of splenomegaly and splenomegaly-related symptoms, remain poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the long-term recurrence of splenomegaly and splenomegaly-related symptoms in children with HS who underwent PS versus TS at a single institution between 2008 and 2020.
