Efficacy and Feasibility of Just-in-Time Nudging in Reducing Evening Snacking Measured by Continuous Glucose Monitoring in Adults With Type 2 Diabetes: A Micro-Randomized Study.

AIMS: This study aimed to determine whether in people with Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), a digital nudge delivered by a smartphone app soon after dinner reduces subsequent snacking events as measured by continuous glucose monitoring (CGM). METHODS: Participants: Adults with T2DM, managed with diet or stable oral antidiabetic medication for at least 3 months, and who habitually snacked after dinner on ≥ 3 nights/week. DESIGN: Pictographic nudges were co-designed with consumers. After-dinner snacking behaviours were confirmed during a 2-week Lead-In phase by CGM. Thereafter, eligible partic

Association between herpes simplex virus infection and cardiometabolic diseases: protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection is a lifelong viral infection with high global prevalence. Emerging evidence suggests that chronic viral infections, including HSV, may contribute to the development of cardiometabolic diseases through persistent inflammation, endothelial dysfunction and immune dysregulation. However, findings on the association between HSV infection and cardiometabolic outcomes remain inconsistent. This systematic review and meta-analysis will synthesise the available evidence on the relationship between HSV infection and cardiometabolic diseases. METHODS AN

Food insecurity in the development of metabolic diseases.

This Review discusses the current evidence on the relationship between food insecurity, obesity, metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and identifies potential interventions to mitigate the effect of food insecurity on these conditions. Studies in adults (mainly cross-sectional) have consistently found associations between food insecurity and several cardiometabolic diseases, including obesity (mainly among women), hyperlipidaemia, metabolic syndrome, hypertension, cardiovascular disease and T2DM. These associations represent plausible causal relationships given that food ins

Association of serum element levels with cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes mellitus risk in a Kurdish population of western Iran.

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are a significant public health concern globally. Among the most prevalent NCDs the study aims to explore the association of some elements with the the likelihood of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) development. In this cross-sectional case control study, 300 individuals with CVDs (n = 110), T2D (n = 70), and a control group (n = 120) from the Ravansar Non-Communicable Disease (RaNCD) cohort in western Iran were examined. The RaNCD cohort is part of the PERSIAN cohort study, consisting of 10,000 adults. Participants aged 35-65 w

Widening educational inequalities in type 2 diabetes risk and mediators across successive generations: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Lower educational attainment has been associated with incident T2DM and adverse outcomes among people with established diabetes, but these stages have largely been studied separately. Whether education-related inequalities span the trajectory from T2DM onset to subsequent cardiovascular disease (CVD) and death, and whether these inequalities differ across birth cohorts, remains uncertain. METHODS: This study included participants from the UK Biobank who were free of diabetes at baseline. Participants were stratified into three birth cohorts (pre-1949, 1950-1959, and post-1960) to

Rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis revealing the coexistence of diabetic nephropathy, membranous nephropathy, and MPO-ANCA-associated crescentic glomerulonephritis.

Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is the leading cause of chronic kidney disease worldwide. However, Patients with diabetes presenting with atypical renal manifestations may harbor superimposed non-diabetic kidney disease, making kidney biopsy essential for accurate diagnosis. Although cases of DN coexisting with either membranous nephropathy (MN) or MPO-ANCA-associated vasculitis have been reported, the concurrent occurrence of all three entities is exceptionally rare. We report the case of a 59-year-old man with a 20-year history of poorly controlled type 2 diabetes mellitus, diabetic retinopathy, h

Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists, weight loss, and urolithiasis: what urologists should know.

INTRODUCTION: Obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus are closely linked to urolithiasis risk through adverse urinary chemistry, including lower urine pH and higher lithogenic supersaturation. Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) are increasingly used for glycemic control and weight loss, creating a need to clarify their implications for stone-forming patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A narrative mini-review was performed using targeted searches of PubMed and screening of reference lists of relevant articles for studies evaluating GLP-1RA therapy in stone formers or reporting chang

From Polycystic Ovary Syndrome to Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome: A Practical Clinical Review.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), recently renamed Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS), is the most common endocrine disorder affecting women of reproductive age. The new nomenclature reflects growing recognition that this condition extends far beyond ovarian dysfunction, encompassing complex endocrine, metabolic, cardiovascular, and psychological abnormalities. Although the diagnostic criteria remain unchanged, the name change emphasizes the multisystem nature of the disorder and may improve disease recognition and patient care. This review provides a practical, evidence-based ove

Mulberry Polyphenols Ameliorate Metabolic Abnormalities Accompanied by Spatial Microbial and Short-Chain Fatty Acid Alterations in Type 2 Diabetic Mice.

The gut microbiota may contribute to the anti-diabetic effects of mulberry polyphenols (MPs), although the associated spatial microbial patterns and metabolic alterations remain unclear. We investigated microbiota composition in fecal, cecal, and colonic samples and temporal changes in fecal short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) during an 8-week MP intervention in type 2 diabetic (T2DM) mice using 16S rRNA sequencing and gas chromatography. MPs effectively reduced fasting blood glucose and improved diabetes-associated pathological alterations. Spatially, MP administration was associated with distinc

Multifactorial Contributors to Diagnostic Delay in a High-Risk Patient with Hepatocellular Carcinoma: A Case Report with Clinical Lessons.

BACKGROUND: Patients at high risk for primary liver cancer (PLC) are recommended to undergo PLC surveillance at least every six months. Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is a commonly used biomarker; however, approximately 15-30% of PLC cases remain AFP-negative throughout their course. Therefore, surveillance in high-risk populations should be based on liver imaging. Any newly detected or progressive lesion should be further characterized by contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT), contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), or contrast-enhanced ultrasound, following guideline-based classifi

Excess Liver Fat in Type 2 Diabetes Stratified by Intrapancreatic Fat Deposition: A Meta-Analysis of Dual-Organ MRI Studies.

Both liver fat content (LFC) and intrapancreatic fat deposition (IPFD) are frequently increased in Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). We meta-analysed dual-organ MRI studies comparing LFC between individuals with T2DM and non-diabetic controls and explored whether study-level differences in LFC varied according to IPFD burden. Seventeen studies (2142 participants) were included. Individuals with T2DM had significantly higher LFC than non-diabetic controls (standardised mean difference [SMD] 0.89, 95% CI 0.60-1.18). In exploratory subgroup analyses, liver fat excess was larger in studies with mea

Diabetes duration modifies the association between AIP and MAFLD in type 2 diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is highly prevalent in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Although several insulin resistance (IR)-related indices have been proposed as surrogate markers, their comparative performance and the influence of diabetes duration remain unclear. We compared the associations of eight IR-related indices with MAFLD and evaluated the modifying effect of diabetes duration. METHODS: This retrospective cross-sectional study included 5,996 patients with T2DM, of whom 3,087 had MAFLD. Logistic regression was used to evalua
