Association of physical activity, central adiposity, and fast-food consumption with 2-hour plasma glucose in adolescent girls at a boarding school in East Java.

INTRODUCTION: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is increasingly reported among adolescents and is associated with modifiable factors such as central obesity, physical inactivity, and frequent intake of fast food. Boarding schools offer a structured environment to assess these behaviours. AIM OF THE STUDY: To examine the correlation between physical activity, central adiposity, fast-food consumption, and 2-hour plasma glucose (2-hPG) in adolescent girls at a boarding school. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 127 adolescent girls in East Java. Physical activity wa

Underweight Versus Obesity and Gastrointestinal Cancer Mortality in Type 2 Diabetes: A Nationwide Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Underweight is a well-established risk factor for cancer mortality, yet its impact relative to obesity remains unclear in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), where current guidelines focus primarily on obesity management with limited guidance on underweight-related risks. We evaluated the association between body mass index (BMI) and gastrointestinal (GI) cancer mortality across the full BMI spectrum in individuals with T2DM. METHODS: This nationwide population-based cohort study utilized the Korean National Health Insurance Service database. We included 2 507 976 ad

Upadacitinib in refractory acquired reactive perforating collagenosis with atopic dermatitis and chronic kidney disease: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Acquired reactive perforating collagenosis (ARPC) is a rare perforating dermatosis characterized by transepidermal elimination of degenerated collagen fibers. It frequently develops secondary to systemic comorbidities, including diabetes mellitus, chronic kidney disease (CKD), and atopic dermatitis (AD), which limit therapeutic options and contribute to unpredictable outcomes. Here, we report a case of ARPC with concurrent AD in a patient with type 2 diabetes mellitus and stage 4 CKD, who experienced acute paradoxical exacerbation within 24 h of dupilumab initiation and achieved su

Characteristics, risk factors, and vascular outcomes of diabetic kidney disease with type 2 diabetes: Analysis of data from clinic-based patient registry (J-DOME) in Japan.

AIMS: Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) encompasses patients with an atypical clinical course, where GFR declines precedes albuminuria. This study investigated the characteristics, risk factors, and vascular outcomes of DKD subgroups among 2,733 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. METHODS: Using data from a Japan-wide patients registry (J-DOME), we classified patients by albuminuria and eGFR, analyzed annual trends in eGFR and evaluated the incidence of new vascular complications. RESULTS: The prevalence of DKD was 45%, one-third of whom had low eGFR/normoalbuminuria. Although the low eGFR/n

Association between herpes simplex virus infection and cardiometabolic diseases: protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection is a lifelong viral infection with high global prevalence. Emerging evidence suggests that chronic viral infections, including HSV, may contribute to the development of cardiometabolic diseases through persistent inflammation, endothelial dysfunction and immune dysregulation. However, findings on the association between HSV infection and cardiometabolic outcomes remain inconsistent. This systematic review and meta-analysis will synthesise the available evidence on the relationship between HSV infection and cardiometabolic diseases. METHODS AN

Food insecurity in the development of metabolic diseases.

This Review discusses the current evidence on the relationship between food insecurity, obesity, metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and identifies potential interventions to mitigate the effect of food insecurity on these conditions. Studies in adults (mainly cross-sectional) have consistently found associations between food insecurity and several cardiometabolic diseases, including obesity (mainly among women), hyperlipidaemia, metabolic syndrome, hypertension, cardiovascular disease and T2DM. These associations represent plausible causal relationships given that food ins

Widening educational inequalities in type 2 diabetes risk and mediators across successive generations: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Lower educational attainment has been associated with incident T2DM and adverse outcomes among people with established diabetes, but these stages have largely been studied separately. Whether education-related inequalities span the trajectory from T2DM onset to subsequent cardiovascular disease (CVD) and death, and whether these inequalities differ across birth cohorts, remains uncertain. METHODS: This study included participants from the UK Biobank who were free of diabetes at baseline. Participants were stratified into three birth cohorts (pre-1949, 1950-1959, and post-1960) to

Rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis revealing the coexistence of diabetic nephropathy, membranous nephropathy, and MPO-ANCA-associated crescentic glomerulonephritis.

Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is the leading cause of chronic kidney disease worldwide. However, Patients with diabetes presenting with atypical renal manifestations may harbor superimposed non-diabetic kidney disease, making kidney biopsy essential for accurate diagnosis. Although cases of DN coexisting with either membranous nephropathy (MN) or MPO-ANCA-associated vasculitis have been reported, the concurrent occurrence of all three entities is exceptionally rare. We report the case of a 59-year-old man with a 20-year history of poorly controlled type 2 diabetes mellitus, diabetic retinopathy, h

From Polycystic Ovary Syndrome to Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome: A Practical Clinical Review.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), recently renamed Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS), is the most common endocrine disorder affecting women of reproductive age. The new nomenclature reflects growing recognition that this condition extends far beyond ovarian dysfunction, encompassing complex endocrine, metabolic, cardiovascular, and psychological abnormalities. Although the diagnostic criteria remain unchanged, the name change emphasizes the multisystem nature of the disorder and may improve disease recognition and patient care. This review provides a practical, evidence-based ove

Mulberry Polyphenols Ameliorate Metabolic Abnormalities Accompanied by Spatial Microbial and Short-Chain Fatty Acid Alterations in Type 2 Diabetic Mice.

The gut microbiota may contribute to the anti-diabetic effects of mulberry polyphenols (MPs), although the associated spatial microbial patterns and metabolic alterations remain unclear. We investigated microbiota composition in fecal, cecal, and colonic samples and temporal changes in fecal short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) during an 8-week MP intervention in type 2 diabetic (T2DM) mice using 16S rRNA sequencing and gas chromatography. MPs effectively reduced fasting blood glucose and improved diabetes-associated pathological alterations. Spatially, MP administration was associated with distinc
