Two decades of metaphorical use of schizophrenia in Brazilian newspapers: a machine learning approach.

OBJECTIVE: Media representation of mental illness has the potential to reinforce stigma through perpetuating stereotypes, associating mental disorders with violent conduct, or using a disorder as a metaphor, often as an adjective. This study examined how Brazilian newspapers have used schizophrenia (and derivatives involving the root schiz*) over time, whether metaphorically or not. METHODS: A database of news articles was compiled from 2001 to 2022. A multilayer neural network model was trained to categorize the use of schizophrenia and its derivatives as either metaphorical or non-metaphori

Deep brain stimulation of the nucleus accumbens for severe self-injurious behaviour in children: long-term outcomes from a first-in-human pilot trial.

Children with severe self-injurious behaviour (SIB) are at risk of permanent injury and lack effective treatment options. Neuromodulation of the nucleus accumbens (NAc), a key node in reward and behavioural regulation circuits, may directly modulate the drivers of SIB. We report long-term outcomes from a first-in-human, single-centre trial of deep brain stimulation (DBS) targeting the NAc in children and adolescents with profound autism and treatment-refractory SIB (NCT03982888). Six participants (ages 7-14 years; mean 11.7) underwent bilateral implantation and were followed prospectively for

A randomised controlled feasibility trial of FREED-Mobile, a smartphone-friendly decision-making tool, designed to facilitate help-seeking in young people with eating disorders.

BACKGROUND: Early intervention increases the likelihood of eating disorder recovery but many young people delay help-seeking. We developed a smartphone-friendly, online decision-making tool to address this gap (FREED-Mobile (FREED-M)). AIMS: To conduct a randomised controlled feasibility trial of the FREED-M decision-making tool with 16- to 25-year-olds with a suspected eating disorder and no previous treatment for this. METHOD: Participants were randomly allocated to FREED-M or an active control in a parallel group, two-arm trial. Outcomes were measured at weeks 0 (baseline), 4 (post-interv

Neurobehavioral Profiles and Clinical Consequences of MYT1L-Related Neurodevelopmental Disorder: Insights From the Brain Gene Registry.

MYT1L-Related Neurodevelopmental Disorder (MYT1L-NDD) is a rare autosomal dominant syndrome characterized by intellectual disability, global developmental delay, autism, and obesity. Despite growing recognition, prospective and systematic clinical phenotyping remains limited. Here, we present an exploratory analysis of data from 25 individuals with MYT1L-NDD enrolled in the Brain Gene Registry (BGR), a national platform integrating genetic, neurobehavioral, and clinical data. Neurobehavioral assessments were conducted using the Rapid Neurobehavioral Assessment Protocol (RNAP), including virtua

Dynamic gene expression signatures predict psychotherapy response in PTSD.

Static blood-based biomarkers provide limited insight into psychiatric illness and recovery, largely because they capture only a single, unperturbed snapshot of inherently dynamic biological systems. In this study, we applied a dynamic, longitudinal dual-state approach to characterize peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) transcriptional trajectories associated with psychotherapy outcomes in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). PBMC transcriptional profiles were generated for veterans with PTSD (n = 46, 21, and 17, respectively) and controls (n = 26, 26, and 23) at pre-treatment, post-tre

Caring while aging: a cross-sectional study in Lebanon on caregiver burden, mental health, and the moderating effects of social and financial resources.

BACKGROUND: A growing number of older adults provide care for spouses or relatives, yet the mental health impact of caregiving, particularly while managing their own health conditions, remains poorly understood. In Lebanon, where formal long-term care services remain limited and caregiving is largely family-based, there is a need to better understand how caregiver burden affects the mental health of older adult caregivers. Therefore, this study examined the association between caregiver burden and mental health among older adult caregivers in Lebanon and the moderating role of social and finan

It's All in Your Head: A Qualitative Examination of the Help-Seeking Experiences of Women Suffering Postpartum Psychosis.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum psychosis (PPP) is a rare, yet severe, perinatal psychiatric disorder that typically presents abruptly within several days after childbirth and requires urgent in-patient psychiatric care. Despite its severity, postpartum psychosis remains underrepresented in research and can be poorly understood in clinical healthcare settings, particularly regarding the detection of the disorder. AIMS: This exploratory qualitative analysis examines lived-experience perspectives on help-seeking, including barriers encountered when help-seeking, to develop a clearer understanding of the

Protocol for a parallel-group superiority randomized controlled trial comparing Sage- a couple psychotherapy- to supportive individual psychotherapy for borderline personality disorder.

BACKGROUND: Although borderline personality disorder (BPD) is associated with substantial mortality and morbidity, frontline BPD interventions are difficult to access and have suboptimal efficacy. Therefore, there is a pressing need to develop and test brief, optimized BPD interventions. BPD is associated with disrupted intimate relationships, and recent theoretical models suggest that such disruptions may play a central role in driving BPD pathology. This led to the development of Sage, a protocolized, conjoint psychotherapeutic intervention delivered to people with BPD and their intimate par

War's invisible wounds: prevalence and determinants of post-traumatic stress disorder among Gaza women amidst the war: a mixed-method study.

BACKGROUND: The war of 2023-2025 has brought unprecedented devastation to the Gaza Strip, intensifying the psychological toll on the Gazan population. Families were torn apart, and millions were forced to flee their homes. Women in Gaza often carry substantial caregiving responsibilities during war and displacement, which may increase their vulnerability to psychological distress. This study aimed to assess the burden and severity of post-traumatic stress symptoms among displaced women in Gaza and to examine their association with food insecurity, displacement-related conditions, and socioecon

Home Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation With Gamified Cognitive Control Training for Depression: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has emerged as a home-based treatment in major depressive disorder (MDD), although its effects are typically small to moderate and inconsistently observed. Because tDCS may act synergistically with behavioral interventions, combining both approaches represents a promising strategy for developing more effective home-based treatments for MDD. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the feasibility, safety, and efficacy of home-based tDCS and concurrent gamified cognitive control training (CCT) in adults with MDD. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: T

Beyond the pelvis: redefining endometriosis as a systemic inflammatory disorder. A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Endometriosis has traditionally been defined as a disease localized to the pelvis. However, its clinical presentation is often accompanied by systemic comorbidities that extend far beyond the pelvic cavity, a phenomenon that challenges the traditional disease paradigm. OBJECTIVE AND RATIONALE: This study aimed to comprehensively assess the associations between endometriosis and autoimmune diseases, allergic conditions, chronic pain syndromes, and endocrine disorders through a systematic review and meta-analysis, thereby providing evidence for redefining endometriosis as a systemic

How relational continuity shapes recommended chronic disease management: analysis of population-based administrative health data in British Columbia.

BACKGROUND: Relational continuity, or the ongoing therapeutic relationship between patient and clinician, has been associated with improved outcomes among people with chronic disease and emphasized in primary care policy. It has not yet been studied how relational continuity shapes recommended chronic disease management and whether this relationship is modified by patient complexity. METHODS: We used linked administrative health data to conduct a retrospective, population-based cohort study among residents of British Columbia, Canada with diabetes and/or hypertension between April 1, 2020 to

Association Between Exercise and Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) Levels in Diabetes Mellitus: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disorder characterized by a consistently elevated blood sugar level. DM poses a major risk factor for many neurodegenerative diseases, causing a decline in cognitive function. BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) is a neurotrophin in the central and peripheral nervous systems that plays a crucial role in the development of brain circuits. Hence, disturbance in levels of BDNF is linked to the occurrence of neurodegenerative diseases and cognitive decline in diabetic patients. Physical exercise has emerged as a nonpharmacological intervention

Quantitative Susceptibility Mapping of the Centromedian Nucleus and Indirect Comparison with Alternate Sequences.

INTRODUCTION: Neuromodulation of the thalamic centromedian nucleus (CM) is an established therapy for epilepsy and been applied for pain, Tourette syndrome, and disorders of consciousness. Accurate targeting remains challenging because CM is poorly visualized on conventional MRI sequences, necessitating reliance on indirect targeting approaches. Although advanced MRI sequences, such as magnetization-prepared rapid acquisition of two gradient echoes (MP2RAGE) and white matter null (WMn), have been explored, they fail to reliably delineate the boundary between CM and lateral thalamus, a region a

Topical Remibrutinib Attenuates LL37-Induced Rosacea-Like Dermatitis by Inhibiting BTK Activation, NF-κB Signaling and Mast Cell Activation.

BACKGROUND: Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder in which LL37-driven mast cell activation contributes to cutaneous inflammation. Bruton's tyrosine kinase (BTK) is a key regulator of canonical IgE-dependent mast cell responses; however, its role in LL37-induced, IgE-independent mast cell activation remains unclear. This study investigated the involvement of BTK activation and nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) signaling in LL37-induced mast cell activation and evaluated the therapeutic effects of topical remibrutinib in experimental rosacea-like dermatitis. METHODS: Transcriptomic data from

Identifying the Content and Pedagogical Practices Used by Educators Teaching Stuttering and Cluttering Modules.

BACKGROUND: Research has demonstrated that many speech-language pathologists (SLPs) have reported having reduced knowledge and competence in the assessment and intervention of children and adults who stutter and clutter. One potential reason for this is embedded in a suboptimal educational foundation at a university level. PURPOSE: This study aimed to identify the content taught and the pedagogical practices used by speech-language pathology educators teaching a module on stuttering and cluttering as part of an undergraduate or postgraduate program in speech-language pathology. METHOD: An on
