BACKGROUND Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) is the most common hereditary peripheral neuropathy, affecting an estimated 17.7-40 per 100 000 population. CMT exhibits diverse clinical manifestations, including gradually progressive bilateral atrophy, weakness of the lower-extremity muscles, sensory abnormalities, and abnormal nerve conduction velocities or amplitudes. It is important to note that other complications tend to occur during the progression of CMT disease. This report describes the late diagnosis of CMT in a 53-year-old mother and her 24-year-old daughter to highlight the risk of CM

Bariatric surgery is a widely used treatment for morbid obesity, but it can lead to neurological complications, including Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), a rare immune-mediated polyneuropathy. The mechanisms underlying post-bariatric GBS remain unclear, and no comprehensive review has evaluated its incidence, risk factors, and outcomes. This systematic review synthesizes available clinical data to assess the relationship between bariatric surgery and GBS, focusing on its presentation, diagnosis, and management. A systematic literature search was conducted in Web of Science, PubMed, and Scopus f

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) is an inherited peripheral neuropathy with significant genetic heterogeneity and clinical variability. Currently, there are no specific drugs to cure the disease, and adjuvant therapies are used to alleviate the symptoms. By supporting the functions of nerves, bones, and muscles, as well as systemic metabolism, personalized intakes of energy and nutrients help slow down disease progression, delay CMT onset, relieve the suffering and pain of patients, and improve their quality of life. This review discusses the research progress on energy- and fat-manipulated d

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) exhibits clinical heterogeneity and variable progression. In low-resource settings, malnutrition and limited treatment worsen prognosis, underscoring the need for a simple prognostic tool. This study evaluated the Prognostic Nutritional Index (PNI) and Nutritional Risk Index (NRI) in relation to GBS severity and long-term outcomes, comparing their predictive value with standard prognostic indicators.
METHODS: An observational cohort study of 252 GBS patients enrolled between 2019 and 2024 was conducted. PNI and NRI were calculated using serum

Cryptogenic or idiopathic sensory polyneuropathy (CSPN) is a common type of neuropathy seen in patients aged usually older than 50 years. Symptoms and signs are predominantly sensory while motor manifestations are usually mild or absent. Extensive evaluation usually does not reveal a clear identifiable laboratory testing abnormality or electrophysiology testing abnormality. Skin biopsy may be helpful in some patients. This article reviews the etiologies and varied presentation of nutritional neuropathies. Specific syndromes of both nutritional deficiency and excess are reviewed with attention

BACKGROUND: Ascending paralysis is a classic presentation of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), but other etiologies such as nutritional or toxic neuropathies can mimic its features. Differentiating among these causes is critical for appropriate management.
CASE REPORT: A 30-year-old male presented with progressive ascending weakness concerning for GBS. Neurologic examination revealed areflexia and sensory deficits. However, cerebrospinal fluid analysis and electromyography were inconsistent with GBS. Further history revealed frequent recreational use of nitrous oxide. Laboratory evaluation showe

Background: Neurodegenerative diseases, including spastic paraplegia type 11 (SPG11), are complex disorders characterized by progressive neurological decline and significant metabolic disturbances. Spatacsin, the protein encoded by the SPG11 gene, plays a critical role in autophagy and lysosomal homeostasis, which are essential for neuronal health. Its impairment leads to defective cellular clearance and neurodegeneration. Recently, personalized and precision nutrition have emerged as promising approaches to enhance clinical outcomes by tailoring dietary interventions to individual genetic, me

The number of cancer survivors - people who have overcome cancer or are living with the disease - is steadily increasing thanks to improved diagnostics and treatment. Studies indicate that many cancer survivors show good functional and quality of life scores in the long term, but comparisons with reference data show that cancer survivors still experience significant physical, psychological, and social impairments compared to the general population, even years after treatment. Cancer survivorship care focuses on developing care services for this issue, which has not been sufficiently addressed

We present the case of a 65-year-old man with long-standing polyneuropathy, organomegaly, endocrinopathy, monoclonal protein, and skin changes (POEMS) syndrome, who developed progressive multi-organ dysfunction requiring support in the intensive care unit (ICU). The patient's course was complicated by nodular regenerative hyperplasia (NRH) contributing to non-cirrhotic portal hypertension and severe ascites, acute kidney injury (AKI), hemodynamic instability, and endocrine abnormalities. Management involved multidisciplinary coordination across critical care, hematology, nephrology, and endocr

Peripheral neuropathy (PN) is an underrecognized extraintestinal manifestation of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including ulcerative colitis (UC). We report a case of a 52-year-old male patient with UC and type 2 diabetes mellitus who developed progressive weakness and sensory disturbances localized to the fingertips of both hands over approximately one year. Initial evaluation by occupational health services did not identify any occupational cause, and subsequent public health assessments yielded no further explanation. Upon presentation to our clinic, examination revealed diminished sens

INTRODUCTION: Refractory angina (RA), due to a lack of therapeutic options, remains a significant health care challenge. Coronary sinus reducer (CSR) has been recently introduced as a therapeutic option for this advanced form of coronary artery disease. However, despite growing evidence of its efficacy, data from routine clinical practice are scarce.
OBJECTIVES: We report 12‑month observation data on the efficacy and safety of CSR implantation based on the results from the Lower Silesia Sinus Reducer Registry (NCT06288165).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study included data from 67 consecutive pa

Nerve conduction studies (NCS) are the standard method for diagnosing diabetic polyneuropathy. Because a clear association between handgrip strength and diabetic neuropathy can serve as a screening tool, the present study evaluated the association between handgrip strength and NCS and diabetes-related complications. A total of 436 patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) who were admitted to our hospital between April 1, 2018 and March 31, 2023, and evaluated using Baba's diabetic neuropathy classification (BDC) were included. The participants were grouped by sex using the grip strength tertile met

Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2B (MEN2B) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder caused by germline pathogenic RET variants. On the other hand, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) is a hereditary neurological disorder, characterized by distal muscle weakness and sensory loss, with approximately 100 identified causative genes. Herein, we report a de novo RET mutation in a patient presenting with clinical features of both MEN2B and CMT. The patient, a 22-year-old woman, had a history of lower limb muscle weakness, with no family history of MEN2B or CMT. The patient was being treated for a thyroi
