Electronic Pupillometry Supporting the Diagnosis of Adie's Tonic Pupil Following Pterygium Surgery.

This article reports the case of a 40-year-old man who underwent right primary pterygium surgery, resulting in the successful removal of the pterygium and a good cosmetic outcome. However, one month after surgery, the patient noticed that his right pupil was enlarged. He was referred for a neuro-ophthalmologic examination, and a diagnosis of Holmes-Adie syndrome was made. The pupil abnormality was considered unlikely to be iatrogenic from the surgery. Both of the patient's pupils demonstrated light-near dissociation due to bilateral Holmes-Adie syndrome, indicating a pre-existing, previously u

Identification of ITGB2, ELN, and KLRK1 as stress granule-related biomarkers of pterygium through integrated transcriptomic analysis and machine learning.

BACKGROUND: Stress granules (SGs) play a crucial role in cellular stress responses, but their involvement remains unclear in pterygium. This study aimed to identify SG-related genes (SGRGs) associated with pterygium and explore potential regulatory mechanisms involving these genes. METHODS: Twelve conjunctival and sixteen pterygium samples were collected for RNA sequencing (RNA-seq). Candidate genes were identified by intersecting SGRGs with differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between pterygium and control groups. Furthermore, these genes were processed using a protein-protein interaction (

Global, regional, and national prevalence of pterygium in 2023: a systematic review and modelling analysis.

BACKGROUND: Pterygium contributes to otherwise avoidable vision loss and reduced quality of life worldwide. Despite its treatability and the availability of low-cost interventions, it is often overlooked in global health strategies. We aimed to estimate global, regional, and national pterygium prevalence and examine variations in prevalence by age and sex. METHODS: We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, and MEDLINE for articles reporting on the prevalence of pterygium published from 1 January 1990 to 25 September 2024. For China-specific data, we supplemented this search with articles inc

Linking environmental cadmium to pterygium pathogenesis: Mechanistic insights from fibroblast proliferation and calcium antagonism.

Cadmium, a ubiquitous environmental toxicant, poses significant risks to human health, including ocular surface damage. This study investigates the link between cadmium exposure and pterygium, a common ocular fibrovascular proliferative disorder, using human conjunctival fibroblasts (HconFs) as an in vitro model. We demonstrated that low-dose cadmium chloride (CdCl2, 1 μmol/L) significantly enhanced HconFs proliferation and disrupted cell cycle progression by reducing the G₀/G₁ phase population and increasing G₂/M phase entry. Transcriptome analysis identified 724 differentially expressed gene

The Same Homozygous Pathogenic Variant in CHAT Underlies Lethal Fetal Akinesia Syndrome in Three Xhosa South African Fetuses.

What is already known about this topic? ◦. Biallelic pathogenic variants in CHAT cause congenital myasthenic syndrome (CMS), typically presenting postnatally with episodic apnea and neuromuscular weakness. CHAT encodes choline acetyltransferase, essential for acetylcholine synthesis at the neuromuscular junction, and previously has not been associated with uniformly lethal prenatal phenotypes. What does this study add? ◦. We demonstrate that biallelic CHAT variants can cause severe fetal akinesia resulting in lethal multiple pterygium syndrome, expanding the phenotypic spectrum to include pres

Deep Phenotyping and Molecular Elucidation of a New Syndrome: Ectodermal Dysplasia Caused by IRF6 Variants.

The diagnosis of an ectodermal dysplasia (ED) is often made by dermatologists. Some of the more than 50 distinct ectodermal dysplasias, however, are still largely unknown and their pathogenesis is poorly understood. Since we recently discovered that variants of the Interferon Regulatory Factor 6 (IRF6) gene IRF6 may cause ED, we have further investigated the link between this gene and maldevelopment of tissues originating from the embryonic ectoderm. Disease characterization in two previously reported subjects and one newly identified patient (mosaic status) included systematic clinical and ge
