Occasional reports of uveitis following topiramate use necessitated an investigation of relevant cases from safety databases and published biomedical literature. Data mining of the Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System and cumulative review of cases from the global safety database (sponsor database) and published literature were conducted to assess association between topiramate use and uveitis. The Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System search identified disproportional reporting of uveitis (n=23) and related terms (choroidal detachment, n=25; iridoc

Sarcoidosis is an inflammatory disease with multisystem involvement characterized by the presence of noncaseating granulomas. It can affect virtually every organ of the body, with lung involvement being most common occurring in >90% of patients. Other organs affected are skin, eye and liver. Skin involvement is common, affecting 25-35%. Here we present a rare case of a 15 year-old male with isolated oculocutaneous sarcoidosis without systemic involvement.

BACKGROUND: The role of environmental exposures in the pathogenesis of ankylosing spondylitis (AS) remains unclear. In particular, two types of exposures have been suspected to play a role: mechanical stress and infections. The objective of this case-control study was to determine if childhood infections are associated with later development of AS.
METHODS: The cases with AS were identified through the Swedish national outpatient specialised-care register, based on having been given at least one AS diagnosis in the register between 2001 and 2010. Five controls per case were identified in the

The Posner-Schlossman syndrome (PSS) is an elusive disease that can lead to serious consequences such as glaucomatous damage. Deep sclerectomy has been proven thus far to be the most effective surgical intervention to keep intraocular pressure (IOP) elevation under control compared with other surgical techniques, because it presents the least amount of postoperative complications. The aim of this case report is to demonstrate the efficacy of deep sclerectomy with T-Flux and the long-lasting effects that persist after 7 years in an eye affected by PSS. This case report demonstrates that an inte

PURPOSE: To report the association of chronic ocular hypotony with the development of progressive corneal ectasia and hydrops.
METHODS: Retrospective case series.
RESULTS: Three patients with ocular hypotony were referred for corneal evaluation and found to have ectasia and acute corneal hydrops in their hypotonous eye(s). Clinically, the globes were easily deformable with either external digital palpation and/or simple blinking. All 3 patients had a history of chronic iridocyclitis, including one with juvenile idiopathic arthritis. In each case, the area of thinning was narrow and arcuate i

Implantation of iris-claw Artisan intraocular lens (IOL) is a surgical option for correction of aphakia; however, these IOLs have not been used in eyes with uveitis including Fuchs' heterochromic iridocyclitis (FHI) due to possible risk of severe postoperative intraocular inflammation. In the case reported here, we secondarily implanted an Artisan IOL in a 28-year-old man with FHI who had aphakia with no capsular support due to a previous complicated cataract surgery. Enclavation was easily performed and no intraoperative complication was noted. Postoperative course was uneventful with no sign

Monoclonal antibodies directed against the immune checkpoint protein cytotoxic T-lymphocyte antigen-4 (CTLA-4; CD152) have been investigated in metastatic melanoma and other cancers and have shown promising results. Inhibition of CTLA-4 characteristically induces well-known side effects called "immune-related adverse events" (irAEs). IrAEs mainly include colitis, dermatitis, hepatitis, endocrinopathies; uveitis, iridocyclitis, neuropathies, and inflammatory myopathy have occasionally been reported. Kidney involvement is rare. We report 2 cases of acute granulomatous interstitial nephritis and

Introduction. We report a case of a male patient presented with sarcoid lesions of the iris and conjunctiva, mimicking tuberculosis due to epithelioid cell granulomas with small central necrosis in conjunctival biopsy. Patient. A 25-year-old man was referred to our department for further management of an "iris tumor with iridocyclitis" in his right eye. Initial examination showed an isolated vascular tumor of the iris and ciliary body with anterior uveitis and mutton-fat keratic precipitates, suggesting the diagnosis of a granulomatous disease. Conjunctival biopsy revealed granulomatous epithe

Glucocorticoid (GC) drugs are a potent and rapidly effective therapeutic option for the treatment of juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). These medications are mainly used for the management of the extra-articular features of systemic-onset disease. A course of low-dose prednisone may be considered for achieving a rapid disease control in patients with severe polyarthritis refractory to other therapies or while awaiting the full therapeutic effect of a recently initiated disease-modifying antirheumatic drug or biologic agent. Short-term systemic GC administration may also be indicated for chro

BACKGROUND: It is believed that ivermectin (a microfilaricide) could prevent blindness due to onchocerciasis. However, when given to everyone in communities where onchocerciasis is common, the effects of ivermectin on lesions affecting the eye are uncertain and data on whether the drug prevents visual loss are unclear.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this review was to assess the effectiveness of ivermectin in preventing visual impairment and visual field loss in onchocercal eye disease. The secondary aim was to assess the effects of ivermectin on lesions affecting the eye in onchocerciasis.
