Visual acuity and retinal thickness outcomes following anti-VEGF therapy in RVO: influence of early vs. delayed treatment.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Retinal vein occlusion (RVO) is a common cause of vision loss, treated primarily with intravitreal anti-VEGF injections. This study aimed to investigate how the timing of treatment initiation affects visual acuity and retinal thickness outcomes in patients with branch (BRVO) and central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO). METHODS: A retrospective observational study was conducted involving 86 patients diagnosed with RVO (54 BRVO, 32 CRVO) and treated with anti-VEGF therapy at a single UK centre. Patients were stratified into early (≤ 28 days) and delayed (> 28 days) treatment group

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Versus Intravenous Thrombolysis in the Treatment of Central Retinal Artery Occlusion: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Background: Central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) causes sudden, often profound monocular vision loss. We compared the efficacy and safety of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) versus intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) using a systematic review and meta-analysis. Methods: Following PRISMA 2020 guidance, we searched PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and VHL from inception to 27 May 2025, screened records in duplicate, and synthesized visual outcomes (best-corrected visual acuity [BCVA], logMAR), onset-to-treatment time, and adverse events using random-effects models. Results: Twenty-five ob

Optimal Treatment of Retinal Vein Occlusion: An Updated Canadian Review and Recommendations.

Retinal vein occlusion (RVO) represents a heterogeneous group of disorders that remains the second most common retinal vascular disease and can be associated with vision loss. RVO confers a substantial burden of illness that affects patients, caregivers, medical systems, and physicians. Complications of RVO - including cystoid macular edema, macular ischemia, and neovascularization sequelae - may result in severe visual morbidity and blindness. Canadian expert consensus recommendations on the optimal treatment of patients with RVO were published in 2015. Since that time, advances in diagnosis

A Rare Case Report of Central Retinal Artery Occlusion in a Young Female Post-Fontan Procedure: Clinical Implications and Management.

PURPOSE: To highlight the importance of recognizing the risk factors for central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) in patients with congenital heart diseases, as CRAO is a rare but severe condition that can lead to permanent vision loss. Patients with a history of surgical procedures for congenital heart defects, such as the Fontan procedure, may have unique risk profiles for retinal vascular events. METHODS: We present the case of a young female patient with a past medical history of a Fontan procedure who experienced acute vision loss in her left eye. RESULTS: The onset was sudden, with no p

Anti-Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Biosimilars for Use in the Aging Eye.

Anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) therapies have revolutionized the treatment of neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD), a leading cause of vision loss, in addition to other retinal vascular diseases such as diabetic macular edema (DME), retinal vein occlusions (RVO). Biosimilars, which are nearly identical versions of original biologic drugs, offer a promising alternative to these costly treatments. Several biosimilars for anti-VEGF drugs including bevacizumab, ranibizumab, and aflibercept are in various stages of development and approval (e.g. Afilivu, Yesafili

Central retinal artery occlusion following transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) for aortic stenosis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Transcatheter aortic valve implantation is the standard treatment for high-risk elderly patients suffering from symptomatic severe aortic stenosis. While this procedure is significantly less invasive compared to traditional methods, there are concerns regarding the potential risk of cerebrovascular accidents and ocular complications. We report a case of monocular central retinal artery occlusion that occurred following transcatheter aortic valve implantation due to aortic stenosis. The occurrence of central retinal artery occlusion post-transcatheter aortic valve implantation has n

Anti-vascular endothelial growth factor and choroidal thickness in retinal vein occlusion: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) therapy is the standard of care for reetinsl vein occlusion (RVO)-related macular edema, yet its influence on subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT,) a potential adjunctive biomarker of disease activity and treatment response, remains uncertain. We evaluated studies that quantify pooled changes in SFCT and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) following intravitreal anti-VEGF therapy in adults with RVO. Twenty-three studies (971 eyes) met inclusion criteria. Anti-VEGF therapy significantly reduced SFCT at 1 month (MD 10.25 µm; 95% CI 6.31-14.19),

Expanding horizons of intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor therapy in retinal diseases.

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) plays a central role in the pathogenesis of retinal and choroidal neovascularization, as well as macular edema (ME), in retinal disorders such as diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusion (RVO), and age-related macular degeneration (ARMD). The advent of intravitreal anti-VEGF therapy has revolutionized their management. More recently, these agents have been explored in several other retinal pathologies characterized by secondary neovascularization, either in vascular or non-vascular disorders. This review summarizes current evidence on the role of a

The role of adjunctive aqueous suppressants for anti-vascular endothelial growth factor therapy: A systematic review.

Our goal is to determine whether adjunctive aqueous suppressants (topical β-blockers, carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, or oral acetazolamide) enhance outcomes of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) therapy for diabetic macular edema (DME), retinal vein occlusion (RVO), and neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD), focusing on retinal thickness, visual acuity, injection burden, intraocular pressure (IOP), and safety. DME, RVO, and nAMD are leading causes of vision loss treated with repeated intravitreal injections, yet many eyes show persistent fluid. Aqueous suppressan
