Anti-vascular endothelial growth factor and choroidal thickness in retinal vein occlusion: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) therapy is the standard of care for reetinsl vein occlusion (RVO)-related macular edema, yet its influence on subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT,) a potential adjunctive biomarker of disease activity and treatment response, remains uncertain. We evaluated studies that quantify pooled changes in SFCT and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) following intravitreal anti-VEGF therapy in adults with RVO. Twenty-three studies (971 eyes) met inclusion criteria. Anti-VEGF therapy significantly reduced SFCT at 1 month (MD 10.25 µm; 95% CI 6.31-14.19),

A Rare Association of Congenital Glaucoma and Retinitis Pigmentosa: A 22-Year Follow-Up Case.

Primary congenital glaucoma is a rare congenital disease with a genetic background that shows high intraocular pressure due to ocular outflow anomalies. Retinitis pigmentosa is a predominant form of inherited retinal disorders. In this study, we present the case of a patient with primary congenital glaucoma in association with retinitis pigmentosa. A four-month-old female baby was brought to the emergency department due to corneal opacity in the left eye. The intraocular pressure measured by a hand-held applanation tonometer was 40 mmHg in the right eye and 36 mmHg in the left eye. She was oth

Expanding horizons of intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor therapy in retinal diseases.

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) plays a central role in the pathogenesis of retinal and choroidal neovascularization, as well as macular edema (ME), in retinal disorders such as diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusion (RVO), and age-related macular degeneration (ARMD). The advent of intravitreal anti-VEGF therapy has revolutionized their management. More recently, these agents have been explored in several other retinal pathologies characterized by secondary neovascularization, either in vascular or non-vascular disorders. This review summarizes current evidence on the role of a

The role of adjunctive aqueous suppressants for anti-vascular endothelial growth factor therapy: A systematic review.

Our goal is to determine whether adjunctive aqueous suppressants (topical β-blockers, carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, or oral acetazolamide) enhance outcomes of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) therapy for diabetic macular edema (DME), retinal vein occlusion (RVO), and neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD), focusing on retinal thickness, visual acuity, injection burden, intraocular pressure (IOP), and safety. DME, RVO, and nAMD are leading causes of vision loss treated with repeated intravitreal injections, yet many eyes show persistent fluid. Aqueous suppressan

Oculomics of lipid metabolism: A scoping review across anterior and posterior segment diseases.

Dyslipidemia comprises interacting disturbances in lipids and lipoproteins that track with metabolic status, vascular biology, and inflammation. Ocular imaging offers scalable, quantifiable phenotypes to interrogate lipid-related pathways and to develop oculomics. We conducted a scoping review to map evidence linking dyslipidemia and lipid-related biomarkers with ocular phenotypes across the ocular surface, lens, macula, retinal microvasculature, and vascular occlusive disease, and to consider implications for AI-based risk modeling. We searched PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science, supp

Involvement of Oxidative Stress-Related Inflammatory Mediators in the Pathogenesis and Treatment Response of Macular Edema Secondary to Branch Retinal Vein Occlusion.

Background: Branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) represents a segmental retinal ischemic disorder characterized by localized oxidative-inflammatory activation. While redox-driven cytokine responses have been described in central retinal vein occlusion, their role in BRVO-specific macular edema and treatment responsiveness remains unclear. This study investigated whether novel redox-related inflammatory mediators in the aqueous humor are associated with disease severity and structural response to anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) therapy in BRVO. Methods: Aqueous humor samples were

Central Retinal Vein Occlusion in a Young Healthy Man Following Strenuous Exercise: Multimodal Imaging and Treatment Response.

Central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) is uncommon in young, otherwise healthy individuals and is often associated with underlying systemic or hematological risk factors. We report a case of a 23-year-old healthy man who presented with sudden painless diminution of vision in the right eye shortly after engaging in strenuous physical exercise involving heavy weightlifting. Best-corrected visual acuity at presentation was 6/18. Fundus examination revealed optic disc edema, dilated and tortuous retinal veins, and widespread intraretinal hemorrhages consistent with non-ischemic CRVO. Optical cohere

Causal Effects of Gut Microbiota and Associated Metabolites on Retinal Diseases and Visual Impairment: A Mendelian Randomization Study.

BACKGROUND: Previous observational study findings have indicated a vital association between gut microbiota features and retinal diseases based on the "gut-retina" axis. However, whether their relationships underlie causal effects remains to be established. METHODS: Instrumental variables of 211 gut microbiota taxa were obtained from a genome-wide association study (GWAS), and 28 gut-associated metabolites and pathways were included as exposures. A two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) study was carried out to estimate gut microbiota effects on diabetic retinopathy (DR), early age-related m
